Life Beyond the Walls || Clay & Rory
Clayton had silently agreed to give his sister space. There was no point in attempting to force information out of her, like his mother wanted to do. Like she had done when he had returned from the mundane world. There were things that just weren’t talked about after they happened, Clayton understood that. Cecily should have understood that, perhaps she didn’t but not when it came to her own children. So he had kept his questions to himself, held back his worry and bit is tongue. Aurora had never pestered him, he planned on returning the favor. Until her change in attitude was too much. Something had happened to his little sister, something bad.
Giving her space wasn’t helping, her personality wasn’t returning to normal like he had hoped. Staying silent hadn’t worked and that tactic was being fully abandoned by him. Finding Aurora alone wasn’t an issue, that seemed to be how she spent a considerable amount of her time these days. Talking was likely something she wouldn’t be happy with, but he knew she would need to do it eventually. Not bothering to hide the worry on his face he walked up beside his sister, sitting down at the table across from her “Rory, tell me what’s bothering you.”
Aurora sat quietly at a table by herself looking at a book but not truly reading it. She seemed to spend most of her time that way. Alone and in silence. She had too many thoughts since returning to the institute to make her good company for anyone. She didn't want to bother anyone and she in turn didn't wish to be bothered either. The only one who Aurora could ever be seen in the company of for more than a few minutes was Eve. That was probably because upon her first day of coming back Eve was the one Aurora had spent the most time with and ultimately the one who she had broken down to and told the entire terrible truth of what had truly happened to her while she was away.
It was these thoughts that circled in her mind like a pack of vultures when her brother took the seat across from her at the table. She could see the worry on his face and even hear it in his voice but she didn't know what to tell him to make him feel better. She would never be the bright sunshine girl she was when she left. Too much had happened and what good would it do to tell him the terrible truth. Why should he have to live knowing what hapened to her? Sighing softly she gave him her best look of annoyance. "Nothing is bothering me at the moment except you Clayton." It pained her to push him away like this but she knew it was best for him. For everyone if they just let her be.
Where are you sneaking off to?
"And why not?"
Because you do not need any and it's better for you not to know anything else.
Not everyone. Just because the mundane world wasn’t as great as one would wish doesn’t mean they will live a miserable life. It’s all on that person if they want to live a miserable life or not.
Some people are just trapped within one though. While others deserve to be miserable and alone their whole lives.
Do you need something or are you just here to bother me?
"Travel more, I suppose. I’m glad you’re back Rory." Apparently the siblings had a habit for leaving only to return to St. Clair’s, it’s what Clay had done himself. "You should remember, I only get called my full name when I’ve caused trouble."
"I doubt there's anything else worth seeing in the mundane world. I've learned my lesson. When are you not causing trouble Clayton? Besides I will call you whatever I wish to call you." Rory gave him a small smile in an attempt to soften her harsh words.
"Your vague answers are only making me want to ask more questions."
It's too bad you won't be getting anymore answers.
You act as if you are the opposite of fine, but you’re trying to hide it from me.
I promise you there is nothing for you to worry about.
The things we can’t have are the thing we tend to want the most.
That's true enough. I suppose with that mind set everyone is doomed to live a miserable life.
Well we’ve been just fine. You, on the other hand don’t look so great. How was…your time with the mundanes?
How sweet of you Tessa. It was fine.
That’s good then, knocking the naive attitude out of you and all. I just never really got why people would think the mundane world would be great.
Indeed. I don't know what I was thinking.
There was a flash of concern in his eyes after Aurora response. Avoiding their mother was something that the siblings did, but Aurora was normally the one who was most willing to talk to their mother. But he quickly hid the worry behind a smile, keeping his thoughts to himself. “I’ll protect you from her interrogation as long as I can. Are you back to stay then?”
Aurora gave him a guarded smile with a shrug of her shoulders. "Thanks Clayton. I suppose I am where else could I go?"
You don’t act like everything is fine.
How do I act then?
"Really? Where?"
Nowhere you would want to go. It's best you don't know.
Rory? I didn’t know you’d gotten back yet.
Indeed. I just wanted to come check up on you girls.
"So, where were you?"
Out in the world if you must know.
