The art of hand-knotted carpets, locally known as 'Kal Baffi', was brought to Kashmir in the 15th century when Sultan Zain ul Abidin brought weavers from Persia. Carpet makers in Kashmir still follow the traditional method of taking notes in shorthand style on paper called talim, followed by other steps. They include a wide range of floral patterns, birds, trees and nature-inspired beauty motifs. Recognising the importance of the provincial craft skills as part of design innovation Uttar Pradesh Institute of Design and Research (@upidrofficial) has initiated Technical Training Program in craft based/innovative design to students and artisans/handicrafts persons. Almost every major district of Uttar Pradesh is proficient in some crafts, be it Silk brocade of Varanasi, Moonj craft of Allahabad, wood carving of Saharanpur and so on.
