The Housemaid by Frida McFadden
Rating: 4/5
Review: I actually saw the movie before reading the book (which I never do), and the movie was so good I had to read the book. I had read another of McFadden's books, "The Coworker" a couple years ago and loved it so I gave this one a shot.
Overall, it was really good. The writing is pretty straightforward, not much long, flowery prose or imagery, but it works well given the pacing of the book. Since I'd seen the movie, the plot twists didn't hit quite as hard, although they definitely did in the movie. I was pleasently surprised to find a few things changed in the movie from the book, so there was still a considerable element of surprise.
Content warning: there is mental illness, murder, discussion of SA, domestic abuse, and sex. I didn't find anything too descriptive or graphic, and the mention of the characters sleeping together rarely went beyond mentioning that's what they had done.
