hi, so yes you may have already seen this posted to my account, and you're probably wondering "why is she posting this again?" (unless you already saw the mistake)...
i do in fact have one and a half brain cells and it took a friend to point out the mistake to me to realize i had put the same aspiration for 3 generations... oh boy...

Sexuality stuff
Lesbian people are not inherently toxic in any shape or form. If someone is a bad person, itâs separate from the fact theyâre lesbian.
Gay people are not inherently toxic in any shape or form. If someone is a bad person, itâs separate from the fact theyâre gay.
No one is inherently toxic because of their identity.
BUT
This does NOT MEAN you get a pass if youâre contributing to the oppression of another minority, intentionally/directly or otherwise.
So if youâre white and cis and gay, you can still be racist/sexist/transphobic/etc.
WLW-specific slurs can only be reclaimed by WLW
MLM-specific slurs can only be reclaimed by MLM
Not everyone is comfortable with reclaiming slurs
Not everyone is ok with the use of reclaimed slurs around them
If someone with trauma tells you that the use of a certain slur triggers them, respect it
Bisexual/Pansexual/Polysexual/Omnisexual people are not inherently inferior or superior to a different label. If someone IDâs as bisexual, theyâre not transphobic by default. Likewise, if someone is pansexual, theyâre not âbetterâ or more âwokeâ than bisexual people.
Asexual/Aromantic people are LGBT if they want to be considered LGBT. Yes, that includes heteroromantic aces and heterosexual aros.
Which brings me to my next statement:
NO ONE HAS TO PROVE THEIR VALIDITY TO YOU

If you see someone âstraightâ at pride, mind your own business. You donât have an intrinsic right to know what someoneâs identity is or why theyâre there. I know several people LGBT+ that could only go to pride if they went under the pretense that they were an ally.
Allies are welcome at pride, but pride is not FOR you.
Gender stuff
Binding with ace bandages or duct tape is not safe
Binding for more than 8 hours is not safe
Binding while you sleep is not safe
Neopronouns are valid
Gender neutral pronouns are valid
And both are grammatically correct
Not everyone transmasculine binds/packs and not everyone transfeminine tucks or uses breast forms
Not everyone transmasculine has short hair or stops shaving or doesnât wear makeup and not everyone transfeminine has long hair or DO do the things I listed
Not all trans people have dysphoria
Pronouns deserve to be respected regardless of your personal opinion of the person. Donât go around calling someone a âheâ when you know they go by âtheyâ because they never paid you back after that bag of chips that one time. You can have opinions about people, but leave their identity out of it. (If youâre even a remotely decent person,) you wouldnât call someone a racial slur because you donât like them, so donât do this either.
Nonbinary people donât have to be in the dead middle of the binary to be nonbinary. Some lean towards masc and some lean towards fem and some are a mix or neither or both equally. Theyâre still nonbinary. This includes using gender-specific pronouns.
Not everyone trans wants to/can medically transition!! If someone is pre/never op or pre/never HRT, theyâre still trans.
And of course, the rule that applies to everyone.

Need surgery? Your survival chances just dropped significantly because your surgeon no longer has disposable gloves, etc.
Need a vaccine? Well, letâs see, we canâŠwe can use a washable glass syringe, sure, and youâll catch whatever the last person had. What about that insulin you need to not die unpleasantly? It just got even harder to obtain and deal with. Your blood glucose meter is now much more expensive.
Need an MRI? Nope, we had to stop doing those because we couldnât use any tools near them.
Need a prosthetic? Hereâs your hook.
Better keep your meds well away from the kids, because they no longer have childproof tops on them.
If we ban all plastics people will die.
What we need is to create plastics that donât have the environmental issues. Reduce unnecessary use of plastic sure, but not all use of plastic is unnecessary.
You need to think through your absolutes. We all do. Even banning plastic straws is horribly ableist.

One of the really, really frustrating things about being autistic is that you feel like you spend your life trying to reach some sort of unattainable middle-ground:
- Weâre criticised for not making enough conversation, but when we do actually really get in to a conversation we are told weâre âtoo intenseâ.
- Weâre often trained to maintain unbroken eye-contact during conversations, yet in reality too much eye-contact is called âstaringâ and makes people very, very uncomfortable.Â
- Weâre encouraged to âexpressâ ourselves more, yet our actual, genuine emotional reactions are usually deemed âinnapropiateâ or âunnescessaryâ.Â
- Weâre told to be friendly and confident when approaching new people, but are then warned that we âcome off too strongâ.
- We are told to try and make interesting conversation, but are also taught that speaking about our interests will only ever annoy other people.Â
- Weâre asked to explain our difficulties and anxieties, only to be told that these explanations âmake no senseâ or that our worries are unrealistic and invalid.Â
- Weâre expected to force ourselves in to social situations that feel overwhelming and draining yet still somehow remain friendly, good-tempered and pleasantly sociable.Â
- We are encouraged to develop good self-esteem, while at the exact same time being taught that everything about us is wrong.
I donât hate having autism - Iâve never hated having autism. But I do hate living with the never-ending pressure to attain this mythical âperfectâ level of social interaction that simply doesnât exist in my case. Â

Becoming less verbal or nonverbal
Looking âspaced outâ or detached from whatâs happeningÂ
Withdrawing, not wanting to be around people
Curling up in the fetal position
Hiding out under furniture, blankets, etc.Â
And no, person observing above-mentioned signs, thereâs nothing you can do to help. Except go away.
The âgo awayâ bit is good for making a point, since it points out that not intervening is better than trying to intervene and making things worse. That said - some things drawn from my own experience:
As a few other posters have said, if the person shutting down is in a crowded, noisy, or otherwise threatening place, remove them to somewhere calmer and safer. Be gentle, since physical contact can make sensory overload worse.
Try not to ask too many difficult questions (and please do not ask them anything that could wait until later). Being in a shut down often makes executive dysfunction or language processing issues worse; even simple yes-or-no questions can be difficult to handle, either because it is frustrating to process the words, or to make a decision. Do not assume that they havenât heard you if they donât respond immediately.
I, personally, tend to be more prone to withdrawing or becoming irritable when I havenât had food lately. If you know the person in question well enough to evaluate this, take this into consideration. The one question thatâs always welcome to me is âdo you want food?â. Not âhave you eaten lately?â (requires memory + categorization), and not âwhat can I get you?â (requires decision making).
Most importantly: Do not trivialize or try to blame them for what is happening. This is severely damaging toward trust, and if an autistic person has a bad experience with you while theyâre experiencing a meltdown or other episode, they may no longer feel safe around you. Your presence may make a subsequent episode worse if they have a bad history with you. If you suspect youâre not capable of responding apffpropriately (and if you are neurotypical and donât know the person in question very well, you are in this category by default!), it is a wiser choice to leave.
By far the most important thing you can do to support an autistic friend who is having a shutdown is to have talked with this person before they experience a shutdown so that you have a plan in place and both of you understand what to expect in case of emergency. Do this when you both feel emotionally safe. Discuss your plans on a regular basis to reinforce your own preparedness and to reinforce a sense of predictability and security in your friend.
Basically, treat your friend like a human being rather than as a generic cluster of symptoms. Donât interact with them in a way that is dictated by their diagnosis. Instead, ask them what they need from you, as an individual.
also some indicators that an autistic person is shutting down:
signs that their auditory processing isnât working as well as it typically does, including frequently asking for things to be repeated for clarification (obviously the context matters with this oneâif this is in a loud room or a room with several noises going on at once/if itâs a situation where most people would do this, then itâs likely not a sign of a shutdown, especially if no other signs are present)
not being able to give clear answers (ex. more frequent use of âi donât know/care/understandâ)
more difficulty processing what theyâre seeing than is usual (canât think of indicators of this)
having a harder time/not being able to read
basically anything indicating that their processing isnât working as well as usual
obvious signs of increased anxiety/distress (rapid stimming, concerning expressionsâlooking expressionless, teary, angry, and/or frustrated, getting easily frustrated, unusual tone of voice/speech patterns)
most of these are signs i (sometimes) recognize in myself when iâm close to shutting down
and itâs important to remember that a couple of these doesnât necessarily mean someone is shutting down, especially considering these should be changes and not just whatâs typical for the person in question (ex. having constant problems processing audio)
some people also have individualized indicators, which you can find out by (as the previous commenter suggested) talking to/asking them
and if an autistic person tells you that theyâre close to a shutdown or meltdown and they need something (to be somewhere with less stimulation, food/liquids, something to stim with, etc.) but they arenât showing any signs of it, believe them anyway
some of us are very good at hiding these signs (sometimes without even realizing it) for the sake of passing as neurotypical (even if the situation doesnât call for that), and taking our word for it/listing to us in order to help us through a shutdown or meltdown is the best thing you can do in these situations
For me a flat affect/not emoting âappropriatelyâ in face or voice is an early warning sign that Iâm overloading and may be shutting down, often before I even notice it myself. If someone who knows me notices and asks if Iâm shutting down that can be really helpful to me, as once I realize whatâs going on itâs less difficult to identify what I need to do to handle it.

I have a coworker who was mocking autistic people (or what he thought was autism) by pretending to scream and hit himself in the head repeatedly. then he went on to say that "autistic people are scary." it hurt my heart and I couldn't speak to him for a long time.
I donât know who needs to hear this, but you donât need to explain every inch of yourself in the hopes that people will understand.
You donât need to carry pocketfuls of links to show aphobes that you belong in the community. You already do.
You donât need to be a historian to queerphobes to show that your identity is real. It already is.
You donât need to prove to transphobes or enbyphobes that your identity is valid. It already is.
If they truly cared, they wouldnât demonize or invalidate your existence, so donât waste time or energy and go on with your life <3
