"Why?" by Me
It’s the babe brought forth into shimmering light,
It’s the sun on the trees of the view in your sight,
It’s the ivy that breaks up the bricks of your wall,
It’s the thoughts of empires when they fall.
It’s the feeling of getting laid off from work,
The feeling of seeing your hard effort burn,
It’s seeing your government go to war,
It’s wondering to yourself ‘What’s it all for?’
It’s when stars from the past fuse and ignite,
For no purpose except for what physics deems right,
It’s when you are young and shouting in glee,
When you have not seen all there is to see.
It’s the name on a headstone, the hearse in the street,
It’s all their belongings laid out on a sheet.
It’s the kiss you lay on your legacy’s head,
It’s the touch of their hand, against yours, on the bed.
When your eyes flutter closed, and the beep starts to fade,
And you wonder what you could have done to change fate,
When you think to yourself about what you have done;
The woes, the sorrows, the victories won.
All this runs through you as you release your grip,
All the emotion that was felt on this 80 year trip,
Everything built up to when you fall off the edge,
And just before your peace you may ask yourself,
Why?
