Hey everyone!
Get ready! The new theme goes into effect tomorrow!
~IT Sammi
Theme finalized and set to release August 15, 2015
Hey everyone!
So everything has been running fairly smoothly and I haven’t heard any major complaints about the new theme. All issues brought to our attention have been addressed.
So this is your reminder 1 week before that the new theme will be going into effect on August 15 at about 12:00AM EST or 9:00PM PST on the 14th (that’s midnight at the beginning of the day, so the new theme will be in effect all day on the 15th).
There will be another reminder 24 hours before the new theme takes effect as well.
Anyone may still send issues through the ask or submit box over at the sandbox and I can continue to work to improve the theme. After the 15th, theme-related questions/suggestions should be sent through the ask or submit boxes on the main blog.

Theme Preview
Hey everyone!
So Autistic Eagle will be getting a new theme in the near future. (Sorry for the delay.) I’m providing a link to the Sandbox page I’ve been using to get everything set up so people can begin to get used to it as well as provide suggestions/improvements regarding bugs/errors, features, overall appearance, and accessibility. Please use the ask box and submit box on that blog for any suggestions you wish to provide.
I have tentatively set the release date for the new theme at August 15, 2015 (one month from now), but that date may be pushed back depending on feedback and major changes made to the preview.
I will be posting updates every time a major change is made and I will also try to be posting reminders weekly until the change goes into effect.
I will be posting reminders a week before the new theme takes effect as well as the day before the new theme takes effect.
~IT Sammi
Hey, everyone!
Just your weekly reminder about the theme change coming up. The date’s still set for August 15th and as it stands right now, the theme seems pretty solid and ready. Still, feel free to send in suggestions and concerns for it; we still have another 3 weeks before release.

Major Theme Edit
I have shifted the sidebar from the left side of the screen to the right. This will prevent it from overlapping posts when zooming in. Hopefully the change will be effective in mobile theme accessibility.
~IT Sammi
Note: Theme update posts will be tagged #Theme Update for anyone that wishes to hide them on their dash.
~IT Sammi
Fyi, certain themes look really different and mess up when you are on a mobile device but not using the app. For example, one theme, some tumblr users use messes up when I try to zoom in to enlarge the text since it is small by default.
I’m not able to test the theme on a mobile device since I don’t have a smart phone. Are you or anyone willing to give that a look for me and let me know what the result is? In the meantime, I’ll mess with text size.
~IT Sammi
Font size has been modified with the new theme. If anyone could do a mobile test for me, it would be really helpful.

To makiruz, an especially majestic eagle,
As you can see, our inbox is still not cooperating so that screenshot is all I can see of your message. Could you reblog this with the rest? I’d love to answer your question.

You have not feeling hunger as an autistic thing. What about feeling hungry but ignoring it because you are doing this thing and you can't stop until you're finished?
Here is the ask in entirety.

Can someone give me some tips on how to accept my on autism?
I have only recently (since 1 / 2 years) gotten my diagnosis and have been told all my life that I needed to stop being lazy, that I needed to be normal, that I shouldn’t be making excuses and that “I just can’t do it” was no valid reason not to do something. We did not know I was autistic, though we suspected, and therefor I was forced to act as allistic as I could manage to be and keep my complaints to myself and just suck it up.
I hate that I have been conditioned to believe this. I hate that I feel incredibly guilty whenever I do refer to my autism when I truly can not handle something or can’t go trough with something. My autism is not an excuse yet I can not seem to convince myself that this is the truth of it and continue to fear I am using it as some sort of excuse when it’s not.
So please, I beg of you guys. If anyone has a similar story, or has an idea on how to handle it, could you please tell me on how you came to terms with your autism in a world that paints your disability to be some sort of invalid excuse?
I think you folks will be able to help this nice person, yes?
I’d recommend reading some books and connecting with other auties, finalfrontierdoctor. I know that it can be overwhelming, so here are some resources to start.
For books, I’d reccomend “The Complete Guide to Asperger’s Syndrome” by Tony Attwood. This is where I started and it’s a very comprehensive, readable, and friendly guide to understanding and living with autism. It mainly gives advice to people with autism, but it also has information for parents which I actually found to be just as helpful.
For some lighter reading, I’d recommend following some relatable autistic blogs. I particularly like the animal-themed ones that use image macros:
autistickitten
autistic-alligator
aspie-fawn
autisticeagle
For more in-depth interaction and personal accounts, check out wrongplanet.net. It’s primarily a message board, but they also post articles.
Good luck and happy travels on the road of self-discovery!

Caption: “Realizes that ‘pat yourself on the back’ is just an expression/Doesn’t care, continues to pat shoulder as a reward for good behavior”
I don’t get touched very often because it can be stressful and even physically painful at times. I find that associating physical touch with good things is very helpful, even if it’s just me patting my own limbs.
– Rahel
Seriously? I thought people were telling me to pat myself on the back. I had teachers who literally patted themselves on the back and told us to do the same. Now you’re telling me it’s a figure of speech? Have I been lied to my whole life?
I just asked my mom and she says that sometimes people pat themselves on the back but they usually just do it to be silly.
Dictionary.com lists it as an idiom meaning “to praise, congratulate, or encourage.”
I guess it could be practiced literally, though. There’s nothing stopping anyone from doing it and language is always evolving.
I had a teacher (the best teacher) who patiently explained that while this is just an idiom, it is also a really nice thing to actually do, because then your reward center in your brain is actually getting a pleasant experience (at your own control and comfort) and associating it with good behavior. Thus: ACTUALLY pat yourself on the back. It’s ACTUALLY good for you and will make you feel better about yourself and your accomplishments. (This is the same teacher who started every class by having everyone give themselves a nice stretchy hug, for various reasons, some of them the above listed.)
Aw, your teacher sounds wonderful!

Oh my. Thank you, kind anon! You’re pretty cool yourself.
– Rahel
Caption: “Someone asked ‘is not knowing you’re getting hungry until you’re starving an autism…’”
To the anon with hunger issues,
Forgetting to eat and not feeling hunger is quite common with anyone easily obsessed with projects, namely ones that don’t require physical exercise. I can, for example, eat one small meal a day when absorbed in a coding project, and I usually don’t feel hunger at all. My advice in this sort of situation is to plan ahead and set out healthy, non-perishable fingerfood like mixed nuts and water. That way you can eat periodically without having to break your concentration.
If, however, you mean that you never have any lead-up before you experience hunger pains, then you might just not have an appetite. An appetite is the urge to eat food and, as far as I can tell, it’s different than actual hunger pangs, which are stomach contractions. Again, my advice is light, healthy snacking throughout the day along with regular meals. You could even take note of how long it takes you to digest and put yourself on a snack schedule.
So, in answer to your question, I don’t think it’s an autism thing but it’s often associated with autism due to our special interests.
– Rahel
Another common way of explaining this is because of sensory integration issues. We can be hyposensitive to interoceptive input, making it hard to notice when your body is starting to get uncomfortable.
This is an excellent point.
Caption: “Someone asked ‘relating to the question about remembering to eat, I thought not...’”
To the anon who has a question about the eating post,
As you can see, our inbox isn’t working so I can only see the first part of your asks through the activity page. It looks like you were going to correct me on something though. I don’t know a lot on this subject so any corrections would be greatly appreciated!
If you want, you can reblog the original post with your answer or send in a submission. If you’d rather stay anon, you could also try to keep your message around 11 words or 60 characters (I checked, but it seems to vary) and I’ll see it.
