My eldest has started caring for their hair a lot better, and is willing to make some changes to their routine. They're a white kid with 2c hair, very thick and reaching their upper back. We want to get matting down to a minimum, but it's an overwhelming situation, and hard to figure out where to start.
Eldest does not WANT nice, well behaved curls. They want something similar to an afro: their hair being BIG is important. So, to get their buy-in on hair maintenance, I need to have confidence that we can replace the frizz-based volume with something comparable.
Eldest is an opinionated¹ teenager with autism, ADHD and OCD. I have ADHD and anxiety. Doing things is hard.
Sensitive skin and allergies mean that all products need to be hypoallergenic and scent free. 70% of products that claim to be both still bother either them or me. And I have NEVER found a gel/hairspray that didn't irritate our scalps.
While they might be able to maintain fully detangled hair, hypersensitivity means that working through the worst mats to get there is very very difficult. They've started doing a lot of brushing in the bath with conditioner in, and things are slowly improving, but every time we have a bad week it takes a month to get back to where we were.
We're Canadian, and a lot of the guides online assume everyone will have access to American products. We sometimes do, but it's very unpredictable.
They don't like picks, but brushes aren't getting below the top layer.
Shopping is a nightmare, and I'm not able to buy 30 products, looking for something that works. They will also get annoyed and give up if we have to try a bunch of things.
The guides for curly hair rarely consider neurodivergence or sensitive skin. The guides for neurodivergent haircare rarely consider curly hair or sensitive skin. And the guides for hypoallergenic products for sensitive skin rarely consider the other two, OR what's available in Canada!
I don't even know how to ask for help, because I have to give so many caveats and exceptions! And cutting it all off makes them MISERABLE.
Where do I start detangling the problem of detangling their hair?
¹ A lot of people use this term like an insult. I'm not. Teenagers SHOULD have lots of opinions!
