Harmony is my 90′s girl who is also, apparently, the leader of a small Furby cult. 

Furbies were a really big deal when they were first released in 1998. These smaller, nonverbal, doll-sized ones were actually keychains sold by McDonald’s. Harmony is wearing the iconic and longtime fan-favorite American Girl of Today Cargo Outfit from 1999.

I feel like they made a lot of hype for Sunny and Luna, like it felt like they were going to set up a conflict between the two and give them some sort of character arc. Like being rivals or having them learn to be more accepting of each others creative differences.

But they really didn’t do much with Luna in these new episodes.

December photo challenge, day 9: Deck the halls!

Cécile’s maman said that she and Marie-Grace may decorate the parlor for Christmas. They may have gotten a little carried away in the process!

Josefina gets to have chocolate on special occasions, like her birthday. Chocolate was a rare treat in 1824, when it had to be imported all the way from Mexico City, a six-month journey south! So she wants to share her recipe for New Mexican hot chocolate, in case you have been patient enough to wait for some chocolate of your own. This recipe comes from Josefina’s Cookbook.

Ingredients: 

5 tablespoons powdered, unsweetened cocoa

½ teaspoon ground cinnamon

1/8 teaspoon ground nutmeg

Pinch of salt

1/3 cup honey

½ cup hot water

4 cups whole milk

1 teaspoon vanilla

Directions:

Combine the cocoa, cinnamon, nutmeg, salt, and honey in a saucepan and mix well. Stir in hot water.

Turn on the stove to medium-high and set a saucepan on the burner. Stir the mixture constantly until it just begins to boil. Immediately turn down the heat so that the mixture barely simmers for about 30 seconds. Stir constantly.

Add the milk to the mixture in the saucepan. Stir it constantly over medium heat for 1 to 2 minutes, but do not let it boil.

Remove the saucepan from the burner and set it on a damp towel on a counter or table. 

Stir in the vanilla. Then hold the saucepan steady while you use the wire whisk or rotary beater to rapidly beat the hot chocolate until it is very frothy.

Pour the frothy chocolate into mugs. Just before serving, add a small sprinkling of cinnamon on top.

Meet my ‘90′s girl! This is Harmony Rivera, and her story takes place in 1995 when she’s 9, to 1998 when she’s 12.  

Since we’ve all been talking a lot lately about possible 90′s characters from American Girl, I wanted to make my own character before that happens. I made Harmony specifically from a range of those years so she gets to partake in the best parts of mid-to-late-90′s pop culture. Which means that I get to make her tiny versions of everything. Including this Tamagotchi, an early example of virtual pets.

Harmony lives in Santa Fe, New Mexico. Her favorite band is TLC, her favorite movies are Independence Day and Jurassic Park, she loves Beanie Babies and Furbies, and subscribes to American Girl Magazine. Harmony was born in Ethiopia in 1986, at a time when the country was struck by one of the worst famines in world history. She was a baby when she was adopted by an American family.  

Harmony is a Truly Me #85. I was lucky to find this doll before they 85 starts getting harder to find, since she was one of the many TM dolls retired in September when the dolls were redesigned. I wasn’t totally sold on TM #106, who is basically 85 with different eyebrows and painted on eyelashes.

Dressing her will also be very easy, since I’ve got a few American Girl of Today outfits from that time, and I’ll probably either hunt down or reproduce some others.
