Infodump on Maths Behind Dobble

Dobble, or Spot It! is one of my most favourite card games. The deck has 55 cards in total and there is always one and only one symbol in common between any two cards of the deck. Always one.

Now this was very intriguing to me so I decided to sacrifice my sleep :D

The short version is:

If a game of Dobble has n+1 symbols on each card (n being a primary number) then we will need a collection of n^2 + n + 1 symbols.

/ What Dobble Actually Is

Mathematically, Dobble is built from something called a finite projective plane. Meaning it’s actually a very structured incidence system where:

every pair of cards shares exactly one symbol

every pair of symbols appears together on exactly one card

every card has the same number of symbols

every symbol appears the same number of times

The official game uses:

55 cards

8 symbols per card

57 total symbols

/ The Core Rule

The entire structure comes from one brutal condition:

Any two cards must share exactly one symbol.

This sounds innocent until you try making cards yourself and realise the system collapses almost immediately into chaos (I tried. Failed twice.)

The mathematics works because the cards obey strict combinatorial balance.

If each card has n+1 symbols,

the total number of symbols is: n^2 + n + 1

the total number of cards is also: n^2 + n + 1

each symbol appears exactly: n + 1 cards

This is the magical balance point where the whole structure survives without contradictions.

/ Problem #1

Given Different Symbols, How Many Cards Can You Make?

Suppose you already know how many different symbols you own. Maybe you raided a sticker pack. Maybe you have too much free time.

Let the total number of symbols be: S

For a perfect Dobble system, S = n^2 + n + 1.

Then each card must contain n + 1 symbols and you can make exactly n^2 + n + 1 cards.

We have established this much.

Then why did Dobble choose 57?

n = 7

symbols per card = 8

total cards = 57

57 = 3 * 18 + 1 (starting card)

Other possible number for a 3 person game is either too small (n = 4, S = 21) or too big (n = 10, S = 121). 57 was the sweet spot.

If your symbol count does not fit the formula n^2 + n + 1, then a perfect system cannot exist. Mathematics occasionally behaves like an elitist nightclub bouncer.

This connects to finite geometry because valid systems only exist when n is a prime power like 2, 3, 4, 5, 7, 8, 9, etc.

Some sizes work beautifully. Some are impossible.

/ Problem #2.

Given Symbols Per Card, How Many Cards Can You Make?

This is the cleaner version.

Suppose every card has k symbols. Then k = n + 1

So:

total symbols become: k^2 - k + 1

total cards also become: k^2 - k + 1

For example, if each card has 5 symbols: 5^2 - 5 + 1 = 21

So you need 21 symbols, and you can make 21 cards

Every symbol appears on 5 cards. Every pair of cards shares exactly one symbol. Tiny cardboard harmony.

The official Dobble game uses:

k = 8

which gives: 8^2 - 8 + 1 = 57

Again:

57 symbols

57 mathematically possible cards

Humanity then removed two cards because apparently infinity was too ambitious already.

/ Problem #3.

If You Want a Certain Number of Cards

Now the problem reverses.

Suppose you want C cards. You need to solve C = n^2 + n + 1 for n.

Then:

symbols per card = n + 1

total symbols = C

For example, let's suppose you want 31 cards. You would want to solve: n^2 + n + 1 = 31 -> (n − 5)(n + 6) = 0

So:

n = 5

symbols per card = 6

total symbols = 31

If the equation has no integer solution, then a perfect Dobble system does not exist for that card count. Which is surprisingly common.

/ The Pigeonhole Principle Matters

The Pigeonhole Principle appears because the system is fundamentally about forced overlap.

If more pigeons than pigeonholes exist, at least one hole contains multiple pigeons.

In Dobble, cards are forced to overlap, but they may overlap only once.

If cards contained too many symbols without enough total symbols available, multiple overlaps would become unavoidable.

The pigeonhole principle helps explain why 1. symbol counts cannot be arbitrary, 2. overlaps become mathematically forced, and 3. the structure needs very precise balancing

For example, if too few symbols exist, eventually two cards must share more than one symbol because there simply aren’t enough distinct combinations left.

Until ofc they all came to the mutual alliance of "why have common sense of survival or literally anything that we need for the school year when Rose exists" and then developed specific looks (sometimes accompanied by gestures) to ask for things, and if I waited the way I at times do with my sibling for verbal communication, I'd get the same reaction as my sibling as if I was personally stopping them from the award of coming to school empty handed because I was prepared and wanted some semblance of humane interaction from them in exchange for being their nanny.
