WILLIAM POWELL and MYRNA LOY in THE THIN MAN (1934) dir. W.S. Van Dyke
i need to find that gifset of gus playing chicken with a sniper and winning by striding forward w no fucks given because that’s some real anton energy right there
@yaranheir asked: i thought i knew.
LOOMING A FULL HEAD ABOVE HIS SON, anton knows his presence is a cast shadow that darkens the space between them. he is aware of the weight in the humid summer air. i thought i knew, his son tells him, the image of uncertain remorse. ‘ diego. ’ even clipped, there is an irrefutable disappointment in the tone that cradles the three syllables. anton’s hands fall upon diego’s shoulders, a demand for undivided attention disguised as a warm offer of reassurance. ( but nothing here comes by chance. everything has its place, everything has its reason. )
he squeezes his son’s shoulders, fingers digging, before his palms quest their way upward to frame his face between them. gentler, here, but no less firm. this is a simple nothing, a misstep that will land against the dirt. it is nothing more than a crumb – but even the smallest of seeds will lay roots that strangle if you let them. his spine bows as he leans in, and his voice is as gentle as a mouthful of lily of the valley.
‘ the road to hell is paved with good intentions. ’
@cigarbred asked: who do they think they are?
DEEP WITHIN THE DEPTHS OF THEIR FORTRESS, father and son break bread in the dwindling evening sun. ( it is too tall to be a mansion, too barbed. it is a home, it is an office, it is the towering arm that holds the nation’s firming hand. the servants here bare teeth as sharp as their tongues, hands as red as the guards who wait at their posts – all willing to sacrifice in the name of el presidente. ) a fissure has opened up in the foundation. their citizens have spread their cards between their hands: the leading notes have sounded in a call for blood.
at the opposite end of their sprawling dining table, anton sits. silent and still but for the minute movements of his hands, he is a cold likeness of the stone replica that stands tall in the city square. a rare thing, he forgoes the blunt edge of etiquette and leaves the silverware to frame his plate. it’s only when he’s bitten into the soft shell, barbacoa between his teeth, that diego makes his query.
if it were anyone else, it would have read as the subtlest tactical offering. it’s a clever thing, to start strong within the silence of your adversary. unfortunately, anton knows his son well enough to know better.
diego’s voice drifts along softly. hesitant, who do they think they are?
anton takes his time. the meat is tender enough to melt on one’s tongue, so he savors it. he presses the folded corner of a cloth napkin against his mouth before responding. ‘ they are lost. misguided. ’ he speaks slowly, deliberate and sure. ( they think he is a monster. they call him king, they call him tyrant. if he is the corruption of power, how could they guide it any better? ) ‘ they are children, mijo, and they will always mistake our kindness for cruelty. ’
honky chateau sentence starters.
warning for: suicide mention, although it is mentioned in a humorous context.
honky cat.
when i look back, boy, i must have been green.
until i saw your city lights, honey, i was blind.
they said, get back, honky cat.
better get back to the woods.
i quit those days.
the change is gonna do me good.
living in the city ain’t where it’s at.
it’s like trying to find gold in a silver mine.
it’s like trying to drink whiskey from a bottle of wine.
i read some books, and i read some magazines.
all the folks back home, well – said i was a fool.
they said believe in the lord is the golden rule.
living in the city is going to break your heart.
how can you stay when your heart says no?
how can you stop when your feet say go?
mellow.
don’t you know i’m feeling mellow?
i love your roman nose, the way you curl your toes.
heaven knows what you sent me.
oh, don’t forget the beer.
it can’t be bad, all the love i’ve had.
oh, you make me mellow.
i think i’m going to kill myself
i’m getting bored being a part of mankind.
there’s not a lot to do no more.
this race is a waste of time.
think i’ll buy a forty four, give them all a surprise.
i think i’m gonna kill myself.
what a scandal if i died.
i’d like to see what the papers say on the state of teenage blues.
i can’t use the car.
i gotta be in by ten o’clock.
who do they think they are?
i’d make an exception if you want to save my life.
they will answer you with screams call you evil, a monster, and give you this so tell me, are you in? and are you a monster?

In the end, I can think of no better judgment on this man. Isn’t this what he deserves?
