i don't care for stranger things but the fact that it lives came out a year or so after its first season tackling pretty nuanced themes and it lives 2 being on a whole different level with the same, owing their popularity to the small town horror/kids on bikes genre popularised by stranger things and stephen king novels in the mid 2010s when it had first come out is so funny to me, because arguably media that had capitalised on the small town mystery renaissance seem to do it well, with some very tight writing and isn't afraid of killing off characters and you have this show that has handed out so many plot armours it is basically drowning the characters and the plot with it; oh how the mighty fall
ok the one criticism people have of frankenstein 2025 i disagree with is that it's "disrespectful" to quote byron at the end because he's a man... he was mary shelley's friend! the ghost story competition was his idea! he helped her get that book published! she quotes his poetry HERSELF in other of her works!! it's an homage to their personal friendship and their deep respect and appreciation for each other's talent, to the creative influence they had on each other. give her the respect of seeing her as part of an artistic and intellectual milieu not just a downtrodden woman. for the love of god
Another thing I absolutely hate about USAmericans is the advent of Tiktok messing with everyone's reading capacities in the sense that since a majority - or at least a sizeable demographic of online fandom spaces are initiated and constituted by these guys, and that they are fed on a diet of clever japes instead of dialogues and faux-Linklater quips in place of deep introspection; it starts affecting the way people write and punctuate on the whole so much so fandom spaces are populated with marketable fics that are a facsimile of the clickbaity giants whose shoulders they stand atop. It completely scratches off community engagement in fandom and replaces it with something so hollow it makes me wonder how they have eroded the very idea of engaging with art with meaning beyond just to satisfy smaller, safer appetites. They refuse to engage with communities or stories that threaten their view of the world and their views are so arrogantly small they cannot be bothered to look past the semantic labels they give their "faves" and dig deeper because that would mean showing some real vulnerability with the art and the community. Fuck all of them.

How’d you rank the Blades book in terms of personal preference and how well-written they?

Blades 2: A really good sequel honestly. Expands on the world. Not too big of a fan of the Watcher storyline or the whole "mc can realmwalk" situation but it's all right. Loved the Shadow Realm storyline - Valax's position in the party. In terms of writing, I'd say it is succinct and conveys the theme without many poetic devices. The worldbuilding has gradually expanded without it being too intimidating. Blades 2 was above all, very absorbing. It was a natural consequence of the events from Blades 1.
Blades 1: Not.. bad lol. The Dreadlord seems to be a formidable villain, we get a good introduction into how things work. It wouldn't have had the girth to stand as a one-shot story so I'm glad they rightfully planned sequels for the same. But I wouldn't say the writing was too strong. It was at best, subpar since they were still sort of figuring out the characters - making Tyril into a Mr Darcy type and such. It's whatever lol.
Blades 3: The story's pretty great, in terms of being abreast in the inciting action with respect to the others and the writing's fine too but I felt like the third book was a bit unfocused. The pacing felt somewhat off and I feel like we never had a chance to connect with the secondary characters all that much. Overall, it's a conclusive third book to finish the trilogy with its poetic strengths but not exactly my favourite.
To sum up, in terms of my personal preference it goes -> Blades 2 > Blades 1 > Blades 3
And in terms of writing strengths it is something like -> Blades 2 = Blades 3 > Blades 1.
(I feel like both 2 and 3 are kind of on the same level - pretty sure they didn't change writing styles all that much)
Fictional age gap relationships are complicated to me because whilst I do enjoy discussion about how the experience gap affects the relationship and about how power dynamics may manifest, since they are. Products of our mind we literally know Character B’s intentions in forming a romantic relationship with Character A and the age gap doesn’t lead to a power gap, so it’s literally not like real life.
