I have a friend with Down syndrome. Actually, he has a lot of friends. They love his joy, and affectionate nature. They say “hi”, give him hugs, and take pictures with him. Then, they typically move on and get back to their own lives. I think it is similar to how you might treat a well trained dog. They genuinely like him, and have affection for him. They might even receive the blessing that being in his presence offers. But, they still underestimate him. They don’t recognize that he has something they lack. They don’t regard his intelligence. They don’t respect his experience. They love his heart, and disrespect his mind. I have seen something the others haven’t. That is why I am among his closest friends.
My special friend loves God, deeply and purely. He spends much time in prayer, praise, and worship. So I asked him if he could teach me how he prays. He said, “I just open up my heart, and let-er-rip!” I think this is a great expression for phase two of prayer. My friend finds phase one to be so easy, that he forgot to mention it. That is because he is more advanced than most of us.
Much of prayer is positional. That is to say, that the first phase of prayer, is remembering who we are, and who we are talking to. We need to get ourselves aligned under God. Who is God, that we might talk to Him? Who are we, that He would be mindful of us? My friend is always in the right position. We should learn from people like him. He remains, in many ways, like a little child; exactly as the Master taught us to be.
We allow ourselves, and the world we live in, to be too big. We see our problems as way too big. Then we see God as too far away, too small, less sufficient, and less loving than He is.
Let me put it this way. We need to focus on God’s Holiness, but then He seems distant. We need to see God as our Father, but we might settle for familiarity that fails to regard Him as Holy. We need both. “Our Father, who art in Heaven, hollowed be thy name.”
Remember, our God created the heavens, the earth, the seas, and everything therein. God is the author, and we are characters being written in His story. We are also His children; created in His image, for His pleasure, for the purpose of His glory, redeemed by His only begotten Son. By Him, we have come to have the privilege to be called the children of God, co-heirs with Christ.
As we rightly turn our focus to God’s holiness, we become so small. As we truly recognize that He is our Heavenly Father, we realize that to Him we are so very precious. When we realize that God is the creator of time, we know that He has time for us, and even our most trivial concerns. When we know that He created everything through His Word, we know He is the author with complete authority. He is the God who sees and hears everything, even before the foundation of the universe. And He sees you and me.
I don’t know if my friend can conceive the greatness of God. But, he trusts God so completely. He never exalts himself. He embraces God’s sufficiency in all things. He knows that God hears prayers, and answers them. He keeps his heart wide open. He loves without fear. He knows that God knows every heart completely. Sins are forgiven. Problems aren’t a problem. God is good; all the time. Nothing more is needed, than to…
Open up your heart, and let-er-rip!
