YES. It was 100% intentional. I highly recommend reading up on the making of this film. There was an incredible amount of care that went into the development.

They had Lakota consultants for the project, especially regarding the use of the Lakota language in the film (which is used sparsely, but when used is accurate).

It’s par for the course now to consult people belonging to a culture for projects representing it these days (i.e. Moana, Frozen 2, etc.) but it certainly wasn’t when Spirit came out in 2002.

This film is allegorical to its core.

Also if your friend has asthma there might not be ANY kind of incense or smoke they can breathe safely. My airways close up at the slightest hint of anything that isn't regular air, doesn't matter if it's organic and expensive and non-toxic, if it's smoke it will trigger my asthma.

Like you'd think I wouldn't have to say this, but I've met a lot of people who understand that cheap incense or cigarettes and wood smoke are bad because they're full of chemicals but seem genuinely shocked that I also cannot tolerate their super special expensive incense or organic dried sage or marijuana smoke. Just because it's expensive or not tobacco or legit just a dried plant with no additives doesn't mean it's okay.

this comic reminds me of the sentiment that “everyone is gay now” but you know what else is on the rise? left handed-ness. and do you know WHY? because we have started to allow kids to write with whatever hand feels comfortable. we’re not taping people’s hands to desks or other horrible stuff.

it’s not that there are “more” people who are queer or autistic or whatever nowadays, it’s that people are actually being allowed to write with their “correct hand” (if you catch my drift)
