Hi SLAL. Quick question. If you had to give sobriquets to the Targaryen queens and princesses such as Rhaenys, Visenya, Alyssa, and Alicent what would they be?
Spoke with @goodqueenaly and we would probably pick the following:
Merry Queen Rhaenys, given her promotion of songs, poetry, and courtly life. Other suggestions might be Rhaenys the Noble.
Iron Queen Visenya, given her strength and conviction as well as projecting an image of stability as compared to her brutal, unstable son Maegor. Other choices might be Visenya the Formidable or Visenya the Undaunted. I’m sure during Maegor’s reign people might have less flattering things to call her.
Given Alyssa’s harrowing escape from the Red Keep and her personal resolve and capability, Alyssa is probably best dubbed Alyssa the Able.
If there’s one thing that defines Alicent Hightower, it’s her ambition, so she’s called Alicent the Ambitious, no question.
Helaena was considered less striking, but pleasant and happy, so I think she would probably be called Helaena the Beloved, with the commons making unkind jokes about Aegon II’s infidelity rather unfairly at her expense.
Short-lived Jaehaera would almost certainly be called the Silent, given her personality.
Daenaera would probably be named the Fair given that she was considered the most beautiful of the masked ball wherein she would be betrothed to Aegon III. However, I think the commons would call her “The Queen Worth a Thousand” in reference to that ball.
Elaena Targaryen was never a queen, but she would either be called Elaena the Clever or Elaena the Erudite, to reference her intelligence, get some sweet alliteration, and as a pun to the house sigil of the Penroses.
Rhaena was also never a queen, but she was famous for her piety and septa’s vows, so I think she would be the Septa-Princess, or Rhaena the Chaste.
Naerys Targaryen was also known for her piety, so I would guess that she would be Naerys the Pious.
Mariah would almost certainly be referred to as “The Dornish Queen” and “The Dornish” by many within Westeros, not all of them referenced kindly. Those more favorably-inclined would probably refer to her as the Peaceful for being a part of Baelor’s peace treaty. Unfortunately, we don’t know too much about her personality.
Aelinor Penrose would probably be unkindly referred to as “Aelinor the Maiden” or “The Maiden Queen.”
Assuming that Betha doesn’t already have the nickname the Black (because why else is Davos’s ship named the Black Betha), I think the Bold works as she is considered to be spirited and willful. Black Betha the Bold works well.
Given that Shaera ran away from the castle with Jaehaerys II, and had a brief stint as queen, I’d say that she would be Shaera the Swift (all GQA that one).
Rhaella’s long sufferance as queen would probably be referred to as Rhaella the Patient within earshot of the king (as to not to risk offending him). Elsewise, the kind would pray for her as they saw her savaged after Aerys’s forceful, unwanted coupling, and refer to her as Rhaella the Mournful. Others might not be so kind, and add insult upon very real injury with less kind monikers.
Thanks for the question, Anon.
