Clint paced through the apartment glancing at his watch every five minutes as he waited for Bucky to return and with each minute that ticked by Clint’s patience began to wear away and his face began to flush with anger. Bucky had promised that he would get done early so that they could get on the road so that they would make it to the lodge before nightfall, however as the time slowly crept by and the sun started to set Clint knew that there was no way there were going to make it in time.
Clint tried to occupy his time and his mind with some cleaning and rearranging the closet. He was sure by the time he would finish reorganizing their closets Bucky would be home and they would be on their way. However he couldn’t concentrate on anything so he gave up and ordered a pizza.
The hours kept ticking by leaving Clint to stare at his phone waiting for Bucky to call and tell him that he was on his way home, but the call never came. He was getting so angry that he even considered leaving for the lodge on his own and just making Bucky meet him there later, if he could even get away at all, but he knew he wouldn’t leave him behind. Besides if he showed up alone at the lodge Nat would kill him.
It was a plan that Nat and him came up with when Steve and Bucky’s fight had gone on for too long. They couldn’t even remember what they were fighting about. They just knew that their boys weren’t talking and things had gone on long enough. Now it was up to Clint and Nat to get the two together to kiss and make up. The trip to the lodge was supposed to do just that, but things were not working out they way the two conspirators had planned.
The longer Clint had to wait the more irritated and frustrated he got. He knew Bucky’s boss was a dick, but Bucky had a hard time telling Howard Stark no. Not that Mr. Stark would ever fire Bucky, he was his top performer at the company and the last thing Bucky wanted to do was disappoint him. Clint couldn’t blame him Bucky looked up to Mr. Stark like a father figure and he’s the one that Bucky a chance at the job. A lot of what they had was because of Stark.
So Clint sat their quietly every night while Bucky worked late to make sure that he would be able to leave on time. A lot of good it did. It was nearly midnight by the time Clint woke up and saw Bucky walk through the door.
“Clint, I’m so sorry” Bucky could see the hurt and frustration in Clint’s eyes
“Let’s just go.” Clint grabbed his coat and bags and headed out the door.
Bucky sighed and followed behind with his own bags. “This is going to be a long drive” he mumbled.
Two hours on the road and Clint still hadn’t said a word as he sat behind the wheel driving a little faster than normal so that they could make up some time. He could see Bucky fidget in the seat next to him, trying to find the words to apologize, but Clint just sat there quietly. He knew that if he said anything right now he would probably say something he’d end up regretting later. So to kill the silence he turned on the radio where the endless songs of Christmas filled the car. It was too bad the festive sounds couldn’t change Clint’s mood.
The only saving grace at the moment was that there was little traffic and the weather was good for the drive. At least until they had gotten back into the car after making their last pit stop. The moment the two got back into the car to finish the last half hour of the trip is when the shit hit the fan.
The temperature seemed to drop and the snow turned to ice and without warning visibility became none existent as the icy rain began to fall harder. It got so bad that Clint had no choice but pull over to the side of the road when he had to slow down to the point where he was only going five miles an hour.
Clint was beyond frustrated by this point. If they had left when they had originally planned they would be sipping on toddies by the fireplace instead they were stuck on the side of the road in the middle of nowhere practically freezing.
Bucky could tell that Clint was even more pissed off then he was earlier.
“Clint, I’m so sorry” he tried to apologize again, but Clint wasn’t hearing it.
“If you would have just stuck to your word like you promised.”
He couldn’t even look at Bucky at this point.
“I was willing to look past the first time when you texted and said you were still stuck at work for another hour, but then that hour passed and then another and another till it was almost midnight when you finally got home. Now we’re stuck in this damn storm for who knows how long. We could be cuddled by the fire sipping on hot cocoa or hot toddies instead we’re freezing our asses off.”
Clint had to bite his tongue from saying anything more, afraid that he would say or do something that they wouldn’t be able to come back from, but he was mad…no he was beyond mad at this point. This was supposed to be fun. Their first real Christmas break since they had gotten out of college and moved in together.
“Clint I’m sorry. I don’t know how many more times I need to apologize for not getting home sooner. I tried, but Mr. Stark….”
He sighed, he knew no amount of apologizing was going to make up for the fact that Clint was disappointed. Bucky was going to have to find a way to make it up to Clint and pray that his lover would forgive him.
A few hours passed and the storm passed and was light enough outside for Clint to get back on the road. It took longer than he wanted, but Clint and Bucky finally made it to the resort. As they pulled up to the cabin they were greeted by a fiery redhead with her hands on her hips and a stern yet relieved look on her face.
“I was beginning to wonder if you two were ever going to make it.” Natasha gave them each a big warm hug.
“ We didn’t leave till almost midnight because…never mind it doesn’t matter right now” Clint grabbed his bags and headed inside.
“Sorry Nat, it was my fault we got on the road too late and got stuck in the ice storm.” Bucky gave her a weak little smile.
“It’s ok, I’m just glad the two of you finally made it.” She looked at her friend and gave him a reassuring smile. “Looks like someone is a little crabby though.” She couldn’t help but notice the tension between her two friends.
“Steve is inside getting ready to make breakfast so why don’t the two of you go to your room and freshen up. I’ll call you when it’s ready.”
Clint didn’t even wait for Bucky as he made his way inside and to their room where he immediately went into the bathroom to take a hot shower. When he came out Bucky was sitting there on the bed waiting for him.
“Look I know I screwed up and you will probably never forgive me for getting us stranded on the side of the road in an ice storm, but no matter how long it takes I’m going to make it up to you. I promise.”
Clint didn’t say a word. He got dressed and unpacked his bags, leaving Bucky to pout off to the shower and wondering if Clint would forgive him before the new year. The whole time he was in the shower he thought about what he would say about to give his little speech only to find out that Clint had left him alone in the bedroom.
The next couple of days Bucky did everything he could to try and make it up to Clint, but his lover was making it increasingly hard to do by constantly finding ways to avoid him. One good thing that came out of it though was it left room for him to reconcile with his best friend Steve. By the weekend Bucky had gotten everything arranged for a little surprise for Clint.
Clint woke the next morning to a note left by Bucky with instructions to meet him outside. Dressing warmly Clint made his way outside to find Bucky waiting for him on a snowmobile.
“What are you up to Bucky Barnes”
“You and I alone. Now get your ass over here.”
Reluctantly Clint got on the back and wrapped his arms around Bucky’s waist as they took off through the woods. Clint wasn’t sure what Bucky had up his sleeve, but he had to admit that it was nice being able to spend the day with him. When the returned to the cabin Bucky decided to give Clint his Christmas stocking was filled up with a bunch of individually wrapped gifts from silly little things to a little charm of a bow and arrow; since he had enjoyed taking up archery as a hobby, to a little tag with the word “Lucky” engraved on it leaving Clint looking at Bucky a bit confused with that one.
Bucky didn’t say a word only got up and left the room momentarily before returning with a little puppy in his arms.
“I know our little trip didn’t start out the way you wanted, but I plan on making sure this trip would be a memorable one for us.”
To Clint this was the best Christmas he could have ever asked for, taking the puppy in his arms and giving his lover a kiss under the mistletoe above them.
“It may not have started the way I had planned, but I wouldn’t trade in this moment for anything else in the world.”
“Well next Christmas I’ll make sure that I leave work at a proper time.”
True to his word that next year Bucky made sure he was home well before noon so that the three of them could get snowed in together in the comforts of their own home.
