Yes when they first meet Laurence hires Tharkay as a guide but the sheer amount of guiding he does after the end of his contract is just mindblowing. Whenever Laurence is lost and wholly unsure of what to do with his life Tharkay is there to provide him a path he can take, a plan that will solve his problem.

Laurence declined Tharkay's suggestion in VoE because he's not one to take an easy way out, but what if he didn't? Tharkay probably wouldn't have stopped at giving the Admiralty a false report, he would've put his every resource into finding a way to smuggle a traitor and a twenty-ton dragon safely out of England. It's not even the first impossible task he's done for the man. The amount of effort he puts in helping Laurence out, starting from book 3, is insane.

Not to mention he basically planned out Laurence's post-retirement life and gave him HOME. 10/10 guide service.

no one even really minds because she’s very nice and this is one of the consequences of having a dragon neighbor. it’s just kinda inconvenient, but it’s nice for them to have a day off anyway

I love how in synch Laurence and Tharkay are while being so different and I think it's very powerful that even the spy reveal doesn't shake Laurence's trust in him and doesn't affect their relationship. BUT I am weak, and I do love it when their fight actually they should have fought more BPW is delicious in that way. That whole "I think you like to be doubted" conversation they have *chef's kiss*
