I didn't respond to it because I just can't be responding to everyone in my notes but the other day I did have someone in my notes insisting that the concept of annual or otherwise regularly scheduled medical exams are "America centric" and that no other country bothers with such things, because people can just go to the doctor whenever they feel unwell. and like far be it from me to speak on behalf of other countries but that simply doesn't sound true, bestie. why are we doing derogatory American exceptionalism to the concept of preventative care

Depends on the kind of preventive care, but certainly in Australia yearly checks are not done. I think I remember either me or my first partner asking our GP about it a long time ago, and their attitude was that they were unnecessary in most cases. It was intimated that this was the general attitude of the profession. And it was either stated or strongly implied by that doctor that the yearly check ups we saw in media was a uniquely American thing.

Certainly in countries like ours where the government covers most or all of the cost of general practitioners, but also where the medical system is also desperately underfunded from years of liberal conservative cost cutting (so here, but also the UK, and likely other places), I suspect there would be a general attitude within the profession of minimising unnecessary visits. While yearly check ups can flag problems early, for many people they're just a precaution. For a medical system that's desperately struggling to stay afloat, you can't justify the millions of person hours on the 'just in case' visits.

There are regular preventive checks like the pap smear, but those aren’t required every year.

I am Australian and I’ve lived in a handful of countries. A Swiss “family doctor” will do a full check-up when you first sign up with them, and decide from there what needs to be monitored and how often.

A UK GP practice will resent you for wanting to see a doctor at all.
