I just watched/read a friend’s blog and it got me thinking about setting goals, myself and working out. So 

Tomorrow: Wake up early (enough so that I’m not hungry till after the workout), go to RSF and do a complete work out. I would’ve wanted to do running and swimming for recovery but Spieker’s isn’t open until noon so just running for recovery. 

Now till Winter Break: Project GO + AAS Scholarship

Now till May: Value people more

Let’s see how these goals turn out.

Considering most of dead week prior was dedicated in stress and time towards 11:30-1:30 today, my PS2 final wasn’t too bad. There were 6 potential prompts and 1,4,5,6 were offered (1 being my most prepared and 6 being didn’t prepare). Considering the two midterms, this outcome wasn’t that bad statistically speaking and I was actually pleased with what I wrote. (Preparation and sleep actually help???)

Talked to Kylie after and she’s really down about her prospects as pre-law. She said something along the lines of–how can she go to law school when she didn’t do well in two intro polsci courses. She has a higher GPA rn then I ever did in HS but I think the fact that kids get straight A’s or four point somethings in high school really messes with them when they go to college and start getting B’s. I guess I’m kind of grateful that West rekt me so hard? (haha nope)

Have two more finals to go, but it feels like the semester is already over :)

Also I finished game of thrones last Monday. (Started it the Sunday prior so 8 days RIP) At least I finished it just in time for dead week.

Dead week is essentially over, but I have ran out of ways to procrastinate studying for my PS5 Final on Tuesday so time to make a post.

Wow, these four second-graders kids were tough to teach in Children’s Ministry at Retreat. Of course the girl was great, but even she got antsy towards the end. According to Joyce Kim they’re a really tough class (she’s had them for the past 2-3 years). They all were at a different coloring pace (the middle one took forever), the left one whined a lot, and the right one was just mayhem. I think the person in charge of CM gave them to me because I wrote I had experience in the email with Awana. RIP me. Towards the end I ditched the older kids and went to the nursery which was SO much more peaceful. I miss Awana :(

I had been looking forward to dead week (hey its basically a 9-day vacation), but idk how I didn’t really get enough studying done. Some days I just had things to do, but the days I didn’t what happened?? Spending that night at slottman was not worth; it was super uncomfortable and just made me get mad at John for not letting me into his lounge. On the plus side my FiCB class is really great.

Saturday was our FiCB class’ white elephant Christmas party and I had procrastinated getting my white elephant gift, floor secret santa gift, Jonathan’s gift, etc. Surprisingly I felt very good and successful about shopping tho and got U-Cha for me and Jonathan. 

Excited to come back home to be with my family again, hang out with friends, and just do the things I always used to do in Torrance but have been deprived of.

July 10, 2016 - D2 Cabo: Hard Stuff

Woke up at like 6 because it was cold so I turned off the AC and went to sleep with Drew. Dad woke us up in a racket as usual around 8. We went to Grand Mayan to hear a presentation. The breakfast food was really good but their drinks sucked. When there’s 7 different types of fruit juices and 3 types of milk plus hot chocolate and I’m trying to find water its bad.

Threw the football with Andrew, Uncle and Britta while Mom and Dad did the presentation. Went to the mall after and then the villa. Lots of arguing between mom and dad and me and andrew lol. Had steak for dinner from costco with rice, corn and asparagus. We then played spoons and campfire which was fun because Andrew and Dad’s signs were the FOB korean style things that are only funny to me and Uncle but Mom and Britta don’t get it. Tbh it was a long uneventful day. A “hard stuff” day as Andrew said during prayer for dinner. Oh yeah and just our family went to the exercise room. Andrew and I just did arms, according to him I’ll be hella sore tomorrow. We’ll see.

July 2, 2016 - Universal Studios

I forgot how I thought about going to Universal, maybe Hana mentioned it?, but I asked her if it’d be weird to go with her group and she said yeah (because like 5 other girls were going lol whoops) so I realized I could just go with Mom, Andrew, Michael and another person. So I texted Michael and then he asked if I wanted to go with him, Grace, Samantha, and William. But fifth wheeling wasn’t really my thing so I said if Will didn’t go I’d go to Sam. So ofc Will doesn’t go and then I got stuck going the day after CalSO. But I’m glad I went.

Got up at like 6:40 to shower and pack a few things for the day. Michael picked me up and then we went to Sam’s house. It was awkward at first because I didn’t want to eat the bagels Michael got and spill crumbs into the prius which was clean but then when Grace got into the car she just started eating so I did too after. Sam’s dad drove us there and we got there at like opening time. Michael and I gave them crap for going so early the whole day lmao. Michael made a funny comment about Samantha being our mom since she had the four papers/tickets. So obviously we went to Harry Potter world first and the castle ride was supposed to only be a 20 minute wait but due to technical  difficulties it was like 45 but worth because 1) best ride in the park probably 2) chatting in line was fun. Going through honeydukes and the other shops was nostalgic and reminiscent of childhood. Really tempted to get a chocolate frog but it was $11 and I realized it was just chocolate. Maybe next time. We did the studio tour after which was interesting but kind of long (1 hour sitting in the bus). And then we ate lunch at 11 to avoid the crowds which was actually really smart. Michael and I got hot dogs and Grace and Sam got tacos. We then went on like every ride. Tried to meet up with Hana’s group but Simpsons took longer than we thought so we ran across the park and literally arrived at Water World when the guy closed the gate which was zZz. We happened across the water park and there was this kiddy ride which had us sit in pairs so Grace and I tried to get a couples picture of Michael and Sam the whole time but they literally ducked into the seat and would peep their heads out to see if we were taking a picture which was so bm. After they went to the water park but when the water was falling Grace and Samantha tried to run away but Michael grabbed Grace so they were both soaked for the next 3 hours. The Walking Dead experience replaced the haunted house apparently and was doing rehearsal so we got to go in. It was well made of course, but I think their lighting was off because we could see ahead to the group in front of us so I would always know where the zombies were which made it less scary. Michael had to go pee after every ride which was pretty funny. Sam and Grace would be like “again?!” every time he asked so when Sam went twice in a row I said “again?!” but Michael didn’t back me up.. smh

Lmao Michael wanted us to dab for the pictures but only he did it the first time and then we did it the second time but Grace and Samantha didn’t -_-. I think they wanted to eat at city walk or somewhere near but I said that if we’re going to spend $20 it might as well be at Gen. We could’ve went to more rides but at like 6 I was pretty much done and Grace was tired too. So we tried to get picked up but it was like 1 hour traffic according to google maps so dad wouldn’t let mom come and pick me up and Michael’s parents were at the movies. Sam suggested taking an uber or lyft home but that would’ve been like 20 each so no beans. Grace ended up calling Bright and he agreed to come since he had nothing better to do so we went to the candy store to which Michael bout a $6.99 candy cup which tilted me and Sam so hard. It was the size of a small starbucks drink and only had like smarties and laffy taffy. I got the Bean Boozled thing and we played while we were waiting which was hilarious. Michael got Stinky Socks, Moldy Cheese, and Skunk Spray all in a row. I got Tutti-Fritti, Popcorn and toothpaste. Bright picked us up and he drove really, really fast the way back which was high-key scary but low-key awesome because going 80 in a minivan is hype. We went to gen and I ate a good amount. Definitely one of my favorite days this summer.

TL DR: Don’t go to universal if you want roller coasters, get frozen butterbeer, go to Gen early not late.

July 1, 2016 - CalSO

As first child I get the privilege to discover this college thing. Which is mildly stressful. I hadn’t turned in a Cal 1 card photo because there were no good photos just lying around and was too lazy to take a picture and send it in. I hadn’t done the APP yet either. So basically the night before I stayed up till 2am figuring out classes which was kind of worthless because I hadn’t been checking if the classes were full or not just if they were a major requirement, breadth course, succession course, the professor and his reputation, available in the fall and time slots.

Day 0

Drive to UCB sucks to assmar but I can’t really complain because I slept for most of it after watching Troy with Andrew on the iPad. When we got there I realized I forgot a jacket and the parking slip. Little things that provided unnecessary stress in retrospect as both issues were quickly resolved. The CalSO check in had printed a bunch for arriving cars and Mom and Dad got me this nice Cal windbreaker which I’ve always wanted a windbreaker. Apparently they got this ugly hollister looking jacket but Andrew told them I would rather have the windbreaker so I’m grateful for having a brother that understands what I’d prefer. I was the first one in my Unit 3 Sproul dorm since dad insisted on checking in at 3 which meant leaving at 7am in the morning -_-. Dorm mates were aight. Ian, tall white guy from OC was chill and Kendall, looked like a smaller Andrew Arteaga was a little weird. Saw and met a bunch of debate kids too throughout CalSO POP(Asian guy from parli camp, Asian guy from penn, model un guy, Asian girl who competed against Austin and won Stanford OO) On day 0 we ate at crossroads which was pretty good. One of the girls I met, Teresa, went to CAMS and knew Lujing, Lani, Willy, Genesia, Sandra Le, Jacob Tran. I talked to her about CAMS and CAMS kids on the way down from the Big C hike and she gave a really bad review on CAMS surprisingly. Also one of the guys on the hike was from Evergreen and knew Kushal. Also I ran into Tiffany Liu who was working CalSO and she's sooo nice. I'm really grateful I can hit up West Alumns like her and other Berkeley kids I know for advice. 

Day 1 

Breakfast was in Cafe 3 next to Unit 3. CalSO group was with Lucinda and the Dominoes. Tbh the day was a lot of introductions of Cal heads and informative sessions which was pretty boring. But one of the sessions I was sent to was informative, Greg Cera who's the political science academic adviser and he has such a good personality for an adviser. Hard to explain exactly but just super friendly, approachable and affable. Day was kind of a blur after with tours and more information sessions. But the end of the day had a night rally which I was super hyped for. We could choose between board games, kickball, basketball, scheduling, and restaurant hopping to which I obviously chose basketball. It was a ton of fun and competitive/challenging. Two guys were pretty good with one of the guys being this lanky, tall white guy that reminded me of that one guy I played against at Stanford in the 3v3 tournament. At basketball I talked to Tiffany Liu about classes and stuff and she was super helpful and offered to take us out to Cream. After night rally I did more scheduling and finished around 2:30am.

Day 2

So I had a quick bagel and then went to scheduling in Evans hall but had to rush there because it was farther than I thought. (Clark Kerr is 1 mile away that’s like the distance from West to Home T_T) Met with Greg Cera like 5 mins before 9am and asked him a dozen questions I had and he was really helpful and informative. I felt a little bad tho because we were supposed to be having 15 minute sessions and I left at 9:30. I realized tho that the 30,000 I would be paying if I went to a private would equate to more 1 on 1 time with my academic adviser. Closing was chill, they played this video they made and I was surprised how it was really good. But then I realized its berkeley kids making the video so obviously it’ll be good. Got home around 10:30pm and just conked out.

I graduated today. This is the only picture on my phone atm so it's all I'm posting for today. But appreciation for David Han. I got to know him this year and he was an "out" that I could connect to that I don't really get to connect to often so I'm grateful for his friendship.

Saturday

Was a throw in the morning since we had to drive to Webb at 8 in the morning for Mom’s last Alumni meeting I think. She’s served for 11 years now and they gave her a picture of one of the halls in a frame and Dad was all like, “that’s it? No cash reward?” So after dropping mom off Dad asked us where do you guys want to go.. Panda express? and I was like dafuq, Panda express isn’t open at 9 in the morning and then I realized he just wanted us to “ask” to go to McDonalds so we would feel grateful for it which tilted me. So i said in a confused tone: Mom said we were going to McDonalds for breakfast, which probably tilted him. Its moments like these that strengthen the bond between siblings. Also, seeing Webb I wondered the high school life I missed out on and what would have happened if I had gone there instead of West. After Mom’s Webb thing was Dad’s Korean military officer picnic which we hadn’t gone to in a long time. The lunch was good (korean bbq) and me and Andrew threw the nerf football a lot. They ended up playing volleyball and some of them were really bad so whenever a play was made a bunch of them would say “cha de suh!” and they’d keep doing the “fighting!” in the huddle which was great.  Andrew was the only high schooler playing and he got a bunch of good plays to which the other team asked “noogoo eddy yah” Dad probably felt like a million bucks. After we got home around 5 and had some egg-fried fish from Dad’s fishing trip. 

Sunday  

SKT beat CLG 3-0. Went to church and the interim pastor for today was a guest pastor at a previous retreat I’m pretty sure and the message was three questions along the lines of: Do you believe Jesus is coming, Are you ready for his coming? and Do you want him to come? It was a good refresher/reminder sermon about living each day to its full potential and being an active Christian. Oh yeah praise had every role full but it was David Jang on acoustic which was almost as painful as some of the 8th grade tryouts for debate.  

Awana

We didn’t have a leader for the first 5 minutes of game time so I thought the LIT’s would just have to run red team but Sharon came late. All the boys found out I play clash and wanted to try out some of the cards I have which was funny. I tried to get steven to play a game the whole session but he wouldn’t until the go kart game. Faith played like every game for blue which was bm since she’s so fast and she doesn’t like to play too due to just shyness which is low-key frustrating. Director Charles asked me to go to pals today since they only had one teacher so I went with them and helped out. Valerie came to YNESH but didn’t stay for Awana so it was just me and Maggie with teacher Christine. She got us papas nachos from Carnitas and we went over Chapter 5 of devour. It had this website https://www.blueletterbible.org/ which lets you find all the definitions of words in verses and interpret your own meaning. I might try this in the summer for morning devo.

Dad gave me a hair cut. I found out one of my friends is getting asked to Prom which people have been telling me would happen but I never had considered would. Mom was craving pizza so we went to Shakey’s for some reason and Dad had me drive there in his Lexus. He micromanages my driving which is aggravating but i vented some of that by following his instructions really well in contradiction to other instructions.

Hi! Trump or Hillary? (if you had to choose) / what is your reason

Hillary Clinton is a terrible candidate. Her foreign policy is, frankly, terrifying - if elected, she will probably kill a lot of people, and she will be spying on a lot of other people in case she also needs to kill those people - her record as a Senator (both as it relates to Iraq and other foreign policy issues) and as Secretary of State speaks for itself. I don’t believe a Walmart board member who has endorsed (I think she opposes it now, for reasons) the Trans-Pacific Partnership will be particularly friendly to labor, and the past Clinton administration’s record on welfare and crime in particular represented a grotesque perversion of progressivism.

But she’s not a Republican. More specifically, she is not Donald Trump - which means that not only will she veto part of the awful stuff the Republican Congress will attempt to push through, she will probably not end the world. She may start a war in Syria, but she won’t nuke Beijing or roll tanks into Monterrey or whatever it is Trump wants to do. She is not a racist, homophobe, xenophobe, climate denier, or in thrall to the gun lobby - at least relative to her opponent and the party he represents. More importantly, while her legislative agenda has almost no chance of passing, she will not do what the Republican Party wants to do with regards to judicial appointments, executive orders, or federal agencies.

Tony Kennedy will be 80 on Inauguration Day. Ruth Bader Ginsburg will be 83. Stephen Breyer will be 78. This election presents a choice between potentially locking in a solid 6-3 liberal Supreme Court (flipping Kennedy’s seat and the current vacancy to the left) for the next several decades, or having a massive conservative majority on the Court. The impact of a left-wing Court - on voting rights, on LGBT rights, on the environment, on gun violence - cannot be overstated. Nor can the prospect of Republican majorities on the NLRB or a Republican appointee as Fed chair.

Hillary Clinton wouldn’t be a good President. But she’s not Donald Trump, and in 2016, that’s enough.

High and Lows for the Weekend

High

Birthday -- Lunch at Redondo Pier with Andrew, Mom, Grandma, Uncle Lee Wen, Uncle Lee Long, Britta, and Peter and Simon who are friends with Uncles. Got a Benjamin from Dad, Grandma, and Uncles and two shirts from mom (Lincoln quicksilver shirt and Oxide tank). The food was great and we got a bunch of free stuff since the owner is friends with Uncle Lee Long but the bill was still $450. Me and Andrew were tilted prior because it was supposed to be a birthday celebration and Mother’s Day celebration. Also the restaurant played this obnoxious Happy Birthday Song which went on for three cycles and Andrew hid in the bathroom when he heard it go off. And mom brought these noise makers which everyone was blowing. Monkey-themed chocolate cake.

La Romera with Amanda, Hana, Lehka, Andrew, Owen, Justin Pak and Alex Mills. Beat Lehka at basketball but she beat me at Tennis zZz. Oh and its funny how Amanda, Hana, Lehka all had tennis lessons at one point so they’re all solid at Tennis. The FB chat  (the name is too cringe for me to say or type lmao) had me laughing throughout the weekend too. Then yogurtland afterwords (NO MOCHI LIKE WTF SHOULD’VE WENT TO PINKBERRY) and Lehka and Amanda tried to pay for my yogurt but I tricked them into not doing it.

Played a ton of league, a lot of it with Young. I was resolved to be tristana main but now I’m trying to get Lucian on dualstorm because I got the skin from a chest and am going top/jungle. 

CAPTAIN AMERICA: CIVIL WAR, IT WAS SO GOOD, best movie I’ve seen I think. And eating out with the calc kids (yong jae, Lehka, Hana, Tiffany) on Thursday at Pan was fun because of the SpyFall, Can you see polar bears from here? Lehka always forgot to ask questions, Tiffany was garbanzo beans and never wanted to be at the location and Yong Jae also always didn’t want to be there. 

Low

No Awana because Mother’s day and it was just David Jang and Sarah Choi doing praise which I expected because its Mother’s Day. Got eh boba from the Lollicup in China Town after Church tho. 

Social media is kind of cancerous (the aspect about seeing other people’s lives) like it lowers ego, raises saltiness and just negative sentiments. But this can be used as motivation which isn’t working so hot so. 

Vincent’s mom talked to me on Thursday while dropping me off at del amo about going to Prom with Scotty and Vincent but with no dates which is an interesting prospect. But Scotty is probably going to ask someone so that shouldn’t work. Anyways the low aspect is prom in general like tilt me. 

Random

Tried overwatch, decided not to spend the 60 to buy it.

Randomly snapchatted Jessica Xu and we ended up talking about how when she’s a business/corporate person and I’m a prosecutor I’ll let her go for being shady which was funny. Apparently at least 30 penn kids are going to UCB. 

Practiced driving with grandma’s prius and I think being in the car with Hana, Lehka, and Michael and observing and commenting and occasionally criticizing their driving has helped my driving.

Teaching

Up till now, my response to the question: What job do you want to have?, What is your dream job?, etc. Has been, idk but a job where I would make enough money to retire early and become a teacher. I realized that I wouldn’t want to be a high school teacher at least for the moment. Being a lab assistant for Mrs. Meachem has been the main contribution to this new stance.

The main reason why is because I would feel so discouraged and crushed at the students that fail in the class despite my efforts. A conflict I face is who to help in class lately. Should I help the ones that aren’t paying attention and most likely to fail to help them catch-up only for them to forget it the next day since they don’t do homework? Or the transfer students that don’t speak English well and can’t do word problems which requires more individual attention from me and means other kids can’t get help? Or should I just help the ones that shouldn’t be in Algebra 1 in the first place but should be in normal math so that they can progress ahead and get into geometry or ideally Algebra 2 next year. (I’ve just been trying to do all three) 

Just one period a day is draining for me so I can only imagine what other teachers go through. At times, I feel almost defeated in 5th period knowing that they are not being adequately prepared and there’s nothing I can do to help them past the 54 minutes allotted each day which I must spread out among +30 kids. 

For now, I’d only want to teach elementary or middle school which sucks because high school is where a teacher can make the most impact: sponsoring a club for students, inspiring one student to love a subject and excel at it in highschool > college > life, do fun activities like class debates or presentations.
