I want to preface this by saying this is not victim blaming. This not calling people online lazy or grifting or whatever.
But an underlooked proponent on why some people are nearing homeless and crowdfunding heavily rn is bc society has failed you by making it as inconvenient as possible to learn about social systems and programs that already exist to help your situation as well as not having enough programs and aid.
Lemme give some examples. I have been unemployed for 10 months. My mom told me about a paying job training program a month ago after I already decided to mive in with her to find work, because nothing was coming up in my own city. My best friend didn’t know about affordable housing assistance in my state until she talked to my dad about it on a chance encounter. Some people on here have to see posts about much cheaper alternatives to their current prescriptions or medical plans because its not in the interest of their doctors paychecks to tell them about it. I would have waited to get vaccinated and not have crowdfunded for Uber money if I had known they were going to give free vaccine rides the next month. But I wouldn’t have really known this until I opened the app once that program started, because it is in their interest to keep taking my money until its their desired time for me to reap their “generous” services.
What I’m trying to say is that this is an under discussed aspect of how capitalism fails people. When you are forced to make your life and work and finances so singular and self interested, you are cut off from community and equivalent social services to proper government assistance. You literally don’t know that there is help somewhere out there for you unless you’re told.
I believe a professor I had called this “cultural wisdom” but I haven’t been able to find the social science articles that expanded on this. It’s a practical knowledge of local systems that allows someone to function and thrive in that system. The example she used was having an understanding that banks can hold your money, but the practical aspect of accessing your money (in a convenient and easy manor) was knowing about ATMs and how to use them. But unless you have an account or someone ready to inform you, there’s no dedicated time or milestone where someone learns this.
And that’s just with a machine designed to give you YOUR money, let alone complex social service programs.
I want everyone who crowdfunds for hospital bills to know they probably don’t have to oay them at all. Just find the financial aid office of the hospital. It’s on the website BY LAW. Find the form. Fill it out. Get the bills canceled or lowered! You don’t need crowd money, you need the government’s money that’s already set aside for your medical care.
GO TO, MESSAGE, OR CALL YOUR LOCAL LIBRARY. Libraries are focusing more and more on community resources, support, and outreach. If you genuinely don’t know something or feel uncertain or are in a new situation, a reference librarian will not only help you sort your thoughts through their reference interview but then help you arm yourself with knowledge from reliable and often local sources. It doesn’t even have to be a question to Ask A Librarian. You can simply say “I’m in this situation now. I don’t know what to do next./I’m not confident I know everything I should or want to know.”
More tips:
Bookmark the your city’s webpage and check it any time you might need something that you don’t know how to get. Your city may have a social worker at city hall whose job is specifically to help you with that. Your city probably has a coronavirus task force page with info about free testing and vaccine clinics.
Read your local newspaper; there’s usually a local community paper that is free online or set out in front of businesses that will have about 60% ads, 20% random gossip, 10% news, and 10% local info/programs/opportunities that they have crammed in random corners to fill space. My job used to literally be laying out this kind of paper, and one of the things that I was always doing was checking for “free X day in a ten mile radius” so I wouldn’t have a weird gap on the science page.
Check if your city has an adult education program. My city offers free adult literacy classes that also have a lot of practical financial information.
Check your *county* website for resources. This will usually be a bit farther away but you might find out that you qualify for free bus passes in the whole county, or that there’s a meals on wheels plan that is supported in your area that you can sign up for.
If it is possible for you, enroll for a low-unit class at a community college. Community college are inexpensive, you may qualify for fee waivers, there are flexible class schedules, and if you are taking even just a couple units at a time at a community college you count as an enrolled student at that school - which means that you get access to the health services center (basic nurse visits, diagnostics, prescriptions, and blood tests at little to no cost - I paid nothing when my college health services nurse practitioner x-rayed my chest and diagnosed me with pneumonia then gave me antibiotics when I didn’t have insurance), counseling, students-in-need programs, and a bunch of other random shit. My school is currently giving a $150 bookstore voucher to students who provide proof of covid vaccination - the bookstore sells clothing, food, and electronics in addition to books. That is a LOT of stuff that you can get if you’re able to pay $40-100 a term and can take a class at a time. It’s a lot easier plan for the cost of enrolling in a semester at a community college than it is to plan for an unexpected doctor’s visit or an expense that leaves you low on food.
If you are ALREADY a student at any college or university, go to the student services page on the website and see what they’ve got. A shocking number of students don’t know that their schools offer food assistance and often work with local food pantries.
If you’re in the United States, call 211.
This is the ‘911’ line for community services. (If you’re calling from a landline it will get you local resources. If you’re calling from a cell phone, it may send you somewhere else but just tell the folks where you’re looking for help at and they should be able to redirect you.) Frustratingly, YMMV based on what’s available in your state and area, but like my county has a full-on triage worker. Agency Time is real and it can be a bitch, but this is probably your best first place to start.
SO I decided to experiment with blocking someone from an anon ask they've sent to see what happens (thank you to @monjustmon for being my co-scientist on this), and here are the results from our study:
When you block an anon, the username does NOT appear in your blocklist
If you go to the page of the person you've anon blocked, you can still see their page, and it does not look like you have blocked them. In fact, you can still hit the "block" button on their page.
Tumblr will not inform the user that they are blocked from sending you anons. Mon was able to keep sending me anons, but I was not receiving them in my inbox
Blocking an anon removes the anon from your inbox as well as any previous anons still sitting in there that the user sent you
Blocking an anon appears to block the ip address, as mon was unable to send me anons from a side account
Because blocking the anon does not block the blog it originated from, there does not seem to be a way to unblock :( sorry mon
Blocking an anon sent from your own ip address does nothing. I initially tried making a side account for the purpose of conducting this experiment, but blocking the anon did nothing to prevent the side account from sending another, which I assume is because we share an ip address. So if you have an annoying sibling who keeps sending you anons, sorry, you're out of luck.
So there you have it folks, the details of what happens when you block an anon xD
Actually I will make a post about this. Please spell hawai‘i properly, with the ‘okina, which is a glottal stop that changes the pronunciation of a word! The ‘okina looks like a backwards apostrophe and sounds like a hiccup. There are other hawaiian words that are commonly spelled without the ‘okina, like the name of the island lāna‘i, but retaining the proper spelling and making an effort to pronounce hawaiian words properly helps preserve the hawaiian ‘ōlelo :)
This is what an ‘okina looks like & it can be accessed by holding down the apostrophe key on an iphone!

i lost my job a few months ago and i’m currently on unemployment. my food stamps were rejected because my unemployment is slightly over the approved limit.
my unemployment is barely enough to pay rent and does not factor in my bills at all. i managed to pay rent late this month but i’m about 40 short on my electricity and my car payment is already late. i am also currently supporting my disabled mother who would otherwise be homeless.
if anyone can spare anything this holiday season i would appreciate it.

🚨HELP NEEDED🚨
Hello, I’m Biel and I’m currently the sole breadwinner of a 3 person household. My roommate and I are multiply disabled and we both care for a child and I work fast food but because of the season/weather, my hours are cut and I barely make enough to cover rent and bills, and not for anything else (groceries, medical expenses, new clothes for the kid bc she’s outgrown most of her wardrobe).
We currently have $100 to both of our names (I can post proof) and my next paycheck doesn’t come until the 20th (and I don’t think I’ll make more than $600 based on my hours) and my roommate’s EBT normally hits on the 8th but is under review because I’m now part of the household and DHS refuses to take our documents or attempts to contact to finish the review. Please consider donating and/or boosting to help us out so we can survive the winter

making another fucking donation post ig bc im getting fucked over on school break pay from my new job and I desperately need a car so I can finally fucking move, ive got p/yp/l and CA ($topeconhewwo) and as always if you don't want to donate I'm also doing pay what you can tarot readings
please reblog even if you don’t read, I’m dead serious 😬
(aka. disabled t4t couple spends a year skirting death, seeks to avoid being homeless again)
We started out 2022 in a garage.
Then we were in a goat barn with no plumbing/electricity/floor.
Then I tucked my tail between my legs and asked my abusive mother for help. She got us into a camper but has not been able to help much more than that. Which is fine, I don’t want to rely on her any more or longer than necessary.
After being kicked out of our first campground by the homophobic owners, we have found a spot for the next few months.
We have not had food stamps since our most recent move, and I don’t know when the hell they’ll come. We DO finally have internet though, which means I finally have a fucking job.
Unfortunately I have spent this week doing hours of unpaid training and testing. There is still more to be done. Soooo I am not gonna get paid a dime until, best estimate, early-mid January 2023. Rent is obviously due before that.
Campsite rent is $450. We have $0 since literally every dime we’ve gotten in help has gone straight to food or other basic daily needs.
Every time I ask for help on this app I say that we’re getting closer to me not having to ask anymore. And it’s still true. People tell me to get a job, okay, I finally got one I can actually do with my disabilities! I just don’t get paid for another few weeks!!! Like FUCK I am trying SO hard y’all.

my fiancée's teeth are breaking! this situation was urgent a Year ago and the most 'care' she got was a dental student pulling the wrong tooth. the molar kept breaking, infection would be treated w meds and then come back, and most foods are too difficult to eat. we are recently and tentatively housed again and trying to get insurance but its hard to think with daily pain and a deep infection
shes literally still applying to jobs and looking into peer support certifications and doing medical/benefits paperwork for BOTH of us bc i can barely form sentences half the time due to my own health issues
so here i am ebegging again! because i dont know how else to help and i am watching in horror while my love feels worse and worse
her cash/venm/PP are all @ hedwwig

please reblog like our lives depend on it! lol
they need to stop this NFL season now i am not joking or being facetious they need to reevaluate how football is played fundamentally and it should have happened after Tua earlier this season
they are doing CPR on a player down on the field right now this sport should not be played by children. it shouldn’t be played by anyone as it is right now
The handwringing from the NFL head people after watching Damar Hamlin go down from cardiac arrest on the field during a live game was honest to God the perfect example of how traumatized Americans are and how companies are just like, business as usual. You saw the cruelty in action last night in real time and it just got worse and worse by the minute.
Officials expected the players to "shake it off" after watching Hamlin get worked on with CPR for about 10 minutes and then needing an AED to get stabilized enough to be carted OFF the field in an ambulance to the nearest trauma hospital.
The coaches and players were adamant about NOT continuing the game. You saw men sobbing and screaming and begging for the game to just stop because they could not continue to play after watching that. Officials really said take 5 and then continue play.
Players walked off the field. Coaches were like nah we're done. THAT IS A HUMAN. THAT IS A HUMAN LIFE. THIS IS DONE. GAME OVER.
At this point that I'm watching this all unfold he's just gotten to the hospital and now I'm watching NFL officials being torn to SHREDS by SOME of the public saying HELLO. STOP THIS. STOP IT. SOMEONE MIGHT HAVE FUCKING DIED.
But notice I said SOME. Because the other fucking half were screaming about MONEY and THIS IS A BIG GAME THAT CAN MAKE OR BREAK THE STANDINGS. It was talks about AD times and money being lost. It was talks about well the players know the risks and the game should continue in their honor right?
It was cartoonish evil in a way I started shaking at the rage of it all.
I watched in a span of 2 hours of a 24 year old having cardiac arrest on the field, I saw tweets going from
he's too young and athletic for this to happen
it's because he took a covid vaccine and ate snacks before a game
that's just life and this is ruining the NFL game day experience to so many
well my chain store stayed open after a shooting so why can't these men keep playing a game we paid to watch, they're just lil bitches for crying
they should play! i would play! i would do ANYTHING if i was making X amount of dollars!
well that's his fault i bet he'll stand for the flag NOW
it was sick.
America is broken in a way right now that is going to be talked about in ethic classes decades in the future.
Disgust doesn't begin to cover it. I cried in the shower.
All I could think was, this guy has a job where society says this person had "made it". And at the end of the day his job doesn't care about him either, just like so many of us in retail or being in the medical field or teachers etc. Our jobs do not care about us.
You get hurt, job continues. You're just a cog in a machine.
I watched a customer need medical attention from having a seizure and falling and busting her head open and I obviously went to call for help and get a manager, and then they pushed me back to my cash register and said don't worry about that, keep your light on and keep ringing up customers.
Customer was on the floor bleeding from the head and I was told to just keep ringing up people in the next lane. And to keep smiling and worry about my metrics for being a cashier. (speed, friendliness, commitment)
A shooting at a store in America, and you're told you can keep working an hour later because there's nothing you can do anyways and it's the store across the STREET so you're FINE.
But you know even if it was in your actual store you'd get the same fucking answer.
24 year old NFL player nearly died on the field. 5 minute break and the rest of you players can continue, it's an important game.
America is unhinged.
Hey so
I'm very broke rn like whoa
I need car fare for a job interview tomorrow and car fare so i can bring my grandmother her personal stuff so she feels comfortable while she's in the hospital, I need money to get my mom a shower chair in preparation for her surgery and I still have to pay the phone bill
Baby, I'm drowning in bills and my current job is still fighting me over my last check.

trying to make this as lighthearted as possible but um. Hi i’m calico i’ve asked for d0na@tions before so to tl;dr my story, my dad is a cancer patient and he had surgery two months ago. he unfortunately has had a weakened immune system after the surgery and got sick again last week. so our income has taken a dip while he recovers. i’ve been able to pay for groceries and such but now my medical bills are due again (i am disabled) and i am struggling once more. my goal to cover everything due by the end of the month is roughly $100. my p@yp@l is here.
anything helps! post will be deleted after i reach my goal, but if i happen to be slow and get extra it will go towards next month’s bills. :) rb if u cannot giveth. thank u.
rehashing this post because my dad is getting sicker and i am very worried for him. he unfortunately has a bill that was not part of our expenses at all this month, but he has to pay it and due to that we are struggling again. a job opportunity for me also fell through after looking promising, but I am continuing to look around. my goal for this month is $350. this would cover the bill and also allow us to get groceries/some other necessities.
i have comm options here, but they are closed right now, so dm me if something interests you. we can discuss it from there. please consider helping us out, i want to bring him some peace this holiday season if i am able.
Let’s fight.
What’s the worst household chore? Clearly it’s doing laundry.
As a Jewish person who suffers from bipolar disorder, I have no sympathy for Kanye West. Bipolar disorder turned me into an apathetic, irresponsible person, sure, but it never turned me into a fucking Nazi. There is no manic episode that could make me shout racist slurs, or spew such vile things. When I was manic, I turned into a promiscuous alcoholic, not a bigot. Turning into a Nazi isn't in the DSM5, I can assure you.
Kanye West has more followers on Twitter than there are Jews worldwide. He is one of the most famous people on earth. The fact he can go on an antisemitic rampage without consequences is terrifying. If you're not a Jew, your Jewish friends need your allyship more than ever right now.
Kanye West isn't an asshole because he's bipolar. He's a racist, antisemitic asshole who happens to be bipolar.
Bipolar people who didn't turn into raging bigots because of their bipolar disorder:
Me
Mariah Carey
Pete Wentz
Kurt Cobain
Amy Winehouse
Carrie Fisher
Halsey
Selena Gomez
And millions of other bipolar people worldwide who are battling this mental illness without going on bigoted rampages
