another turning of the wheel
Old, privileged politicians lived in post-WWII America in perhaps the most socialized version of our society ever. Social Security was kicking in. The GI bill helped millions of men get an education. The Interstate Highways were built. Segregation in sports was ending. The highest tax brackets were 90%, deficits were non-existent, and a single salary could provide for en entire family.
Now, at the end of their lives, they want to pull up the ladder and sabotage the country with debt and hate.
You can’t Abstain your way to a Better World.
The Burger still gets made, even if you go Vegan. If you don’t buy it, it just winds up in the trash. If you want to do something meaningful about waste, you need legislation: It must become a crime to waste food in those ways.
If you care about Animal Cruelty in Factory Farms, you need to get legislation passed. It must become a crime to mistreat animals in those ways, and when malfeasances occurs, the onus of responsibility for those crimes must fall upon wealthy shoulders. That, also, requires legislation. It requires regulations, and regulators.
The largest source of Microplastics is wear and tear on automobile tires. It doesn’t matter what brand of shampoo you buy. It doesn’t matter which company you support with your dollar. The issue of Public Transit is too large-scale to be handled at anything less than the municipal level.
It’s not enough to just not participate in society
If you want the world to Change, you must leverage the mechanisms of political power.
You need Government.
STOP PROPOSING INDIVIDUAL SOLUTIONS TO COLLECTIVE PROBLEMS
I have grown to realize a lot of you severely underestimate just how much antiblackness we have to swallow for the sake of our personal peace and our livelihoods. I'm not saying that to be mean or to make you go into a guilt spiral- that would be a useless reaction anyway- but I do want you to consider it. That what you believe to be peace is not just because it "is".
"Well if it was important why didn't anyone say it sooner?" "if it was important, why didn't they say it was racist?" peer, a good 75-80% of what I might say to the white and/or nonblack people that offend me directly goes swallowed for the sake of my paychecks and running water, or God forbid to avoid a bullet. Or if I'm online (where that number shrinks significantly), to be left the fuck alone 🤣
Y'all are very used to not having to hear that feedback bc we've been forcibly socialized into accepting that you won't take it well and often have the power to make it not worth our while to speak. Retaliation is common. That's why it's perturbing to folks when Black people DO speak up. Interrupts the status quo 😅
This elaborate sofa was first seen in the 1992 film 𝑶𝒓𝒍𝒂𝒏𝒅𝒐. In 1995, it was made over to look distressed for the television miniseries 𝑻𝒉𝒆 𝑩𝒖𝒄𝒄𝒂𝒏𝒆𝒆𝒓𝒔. The piece appeared three times in 1999, in 𝑨𝒏 𝑰𝒅𝒆𝒂𝒍 𝑯𝒖𝒔𝒃𝒂𝒏𝒅, 𝑨𝒓𝒊𝒔𝒕𝒐𝒄𝒓𝒂𝒕𝒔, and 𝑾𝒊𝒗𝒆𝒔 𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝑫𝒂𝒖𝒈𝒉𝒕𝒆𝒓𝒔. Most recently, it was seen in 2016, where it was used in 𝑻𝒉𝒆 𝑺𝒄𝒂𝒏𝒅𝒂𝒍𝒐𝒖𝒔 𝑳𝒂𝒅𝒚 𝑾. Have you seen this piece anywhere else? Let us know by uploading your contribution to our website at Bit.ly/Prop009
OMG. Y’all.
I have received an angry comment on a fic for The 100 I wrote and posted over ten years ago.
I’m simultaneously thrust back into the dying embers of an ancient ship war … and cracking up bc. Like. Seriously?
There's a recurring online tendency to aestheticize consensus itself. The imagined future village is full of emotionally compatible people who enjoy communal gardening, conflict resolution circles, acoustic folk music, mutual aid potlucks, and repairing bicycles together at sunset. Which is nice for the people who genuinely enjoy that lifestyle. But plenty of humans are solitary, prickly, obsessive, urban, nocturnal, sensory-seeking, technologically attached, contrarian, novelty-seeking, private, or just plain difficult. Those people do not evaporate after the revolution. They do not get Left Behind while you are Raptured into the Utopia. They become your neighbors.
I'd always feared another man would sweep you away from me. I never thought it'd be your father.
MISS FISHER’S MURDER MYSTERIES 3x08 - Death Do Us Part
A conversation I don’t think yall are ready for yet is that you can love a character sooooo much and relate to them and see yourself in them but at the end of the day they’re still fake and that’s why someone else’s take on them or headcanon about them isn’t a direct message about you or insult to your identity. If your identity is so wrapped up in a character that you can’t distinguish between reality and fiction, then you are the problem. Not some random person online who interprets the character differently than you.
this also goes for when you hate a character soooooo much and relate them to every person who hurt you and see everyone you hate in them, at the end of the day they're still fake and someone else's love for them is not a commentary on your trauma
#i also think we should not be using 'i relate to the character' as a claim to authority on the character #just because you relate does not mean your interpretations are law for the rest of us or even correct or 'more accurate' than anyone else's #it just means you relate full stop lmao. i think Black Sails is an important piece of media because so much of media today is "you need to deal with your rage in small quiet ways. You should lessen that rage. Befriend it. Mellow out."
And Black Sails is "heyyyyy how about we start a very ill-conceived war with the British Empire? How about we fuck shit up? How about we murder people? And continue to murder the fuck out of our problems when that doesn't work?"
I respect that.
Fugitive Telemetry is technically a murder mystery but 70% of it is actually just Murderbot being in baffled and somewhat-skeptical awe of Communist Paradise after spending 40 years under dystopian hypercapitalistic rule and going "damn bitch you live like this????" every other chapter except the "like this" is a steadily growing list for things like "having human rights"
Seeking escape
Those of you who notice such things will know that in a little less than two weeks, it's going to be a year since @petermorwood departed this plane of existence.
As the date's been getting closer, I'm becoming increasingly clear (due to mood swings and sleep disturbances and other such stuff) that it would be a really good thing for me if I don't have to live through this first anniversary of his loss anywhere near the house where he breathed his last.
For that day, and ideally a couple/few days on either side of it, I really need to get away from here.
So that's my plan, if I can get all this to come together (with everybody's help). ...It's not like any brief escape will get the pain to stop, you know? That's years away... if ever. But at least this move will prevent a short-term crisis, and allow me (after the really painful day has passed) to start getting back to what around here now passes for "standard operating procedure"—meaning writing, and doing other work, and getting on with the rest of the current form of life—as quickly as possible.
What I have in mind is to spend the days on either side of May 9th—and the day itself—as far away from the cottage as physical issues will allow me to travel. Let's think of it as a long weekend, an hour or two's flight away. To manage that, though, I need to boost sales at the Ebooks Direct store over the days to come. If the necessary funds manifest themselves over the course of this week, I'll have time to make the necessary arrangements.
So can I get those of you who see this post to reblog it, and bring the Ebooks Direct store to people's notice as widely as possible? ...As numerous ebook bundles are available at discount prices. (There are more than show in the slide below: that's just a snapshot of how the front-page carousel looks.)
...And if none of these appeal (or if you've got them already and want to give them to somebody else): hey, there are gift cards! (I finally managed to get these things organized correctly...) 😅 They come in per-bundle versions, or in a number of cash values to suit your preference.
Finally: if you've already got too many ebooks, or otherwise just prefer to drop a little something into the kitty to help me escape for a few-ish days, here's my Ko-Fi.
Support Diane Duane
...So let's see if this can be pulled off. And for all your past help, and assistance to come: thanks, friends. I appreciate you so much... as your voices, heard daily, are pretty much all that makes the local silence bearable.
Thanks again.

Alanna for this month's portrait!
I confess I don't really remember her from the books, but she is such a badass in the show. Let's fuckin' go, Battle Ajah!!
[Image Description: A digital painting of Alanna Mosvani as portrayed by Priyanka Bose. She is shown from the chest up in her turquoise blouse with gold detailing as seen in the beginning of Season 3. While most of the gesture is out-of-frame, her right arm is raised and her left hand sweeps to one side as she channels. Her mouth is open in a shout of rage. /end ID]
When were you guys going to tell me Tommy Arnold did an illustration of ART abducting SecUnit and Amena?!
