Virginia was such a bitch in this chapter.
I LOVE HER. 💕
I was sooo delusional thinking Darrow and Mustang would have a happy marriage at the beginning of Iron Gold just to find out that they aren’t and have grown quite distant in the ten year gap. Like of course. OF COURSE! They are unhappy. They haven’t felt that way since the book 1. UGHH! Oh and they’re still keeping stuff from each other too. No way! Who would’ve thought otherwise, huh? Me. ME DAMNIT!
But no. Duty and love can’t coexist, I guess. And what puts the nail in the coffin is Pax hating Darrow for being gone all the time. Ha. I knew that be the case (NOT!). Meanwhile, Sevro is WINNING at being a Dad! Which I’m super happy for him and Victra! But like, the leaders of the republic deserve a a slice of what they got. Heck. We readers do! Ugh, I’m sick and tired of this.
Will never not get over Virginia Au Augustus/Mustangs making snarky, annoying comments as the Sovereign, Aja, Antonia, Adrius and Cassius dealt with Darrow at the end of Morning Star.
That line she says after they take the muzzle off of Darrow, just to shut him up again with a blow to the head: “Why’d you take the muzzle off if you wanted him to be silent?”
I kid you not, I laughed out loud for several minutes! Then I reread it again and again because by that I was awestruck by her fiery spirit and her “no, you will not make me bow” approach. What a menace! A 10/10 Gold response!
And also, she a genius for formulating that plan against the Sovereign. Once I realized what was happening, a gasped and shouted, “Virginia, I love you!”
Not only did she win the throne, but she stole my heart in the process too, leaving me speechless.
HAIL FUCKING SOVEREIGN, BITCH. Catch me kneeling beside Darrow, Sevro, Cassius, and the many other highColor officials in the senate chamber.
She will forever be one of my favorite characters. I can’t even begin to describe how much I love her.
Bring on Iron Gold!
does a red rising fandom exist, outside of pinterest? if you guys are out there... can you hear me...
anyone else here likes the Red Rising Books???
(I need to talk to someone or I will EXPLODE)
I’m about halfway through Morning Star right now and I can’t tell you how frustrated I am at my girl Mustang receiving so much hate, distrust, and questionable/suspectful looks from literally EVERYBODY, including Darrow, for no fucking legitimate reason other than her past ties to the Sovereign and her relations to the Jackal and that she’s a Gold!
Like, it’s so unwarranted! And I don’t understand!
MUSTANG HAS NOT DONE ANYTHING WRONG TO ANY PERSON WHOSE HAS GIVEN HER A SIDE GLARE AT THIS POINT. VICTRA. SEVRO. HOLIDAY. IM LOOKING AT YOU!
SHE HASN’T BETRAYED DARROW SO IDK WHY SHE IS DESERVING OF YOUR DISDAIN! LIKE OH MY LORD!
SHE HAS NO PERSONAL BEEF WITH ANY OF YOU TO WARRANT YOU TO ACT THIS WAY TOWARDS HER! SO CUT THE CRAP! OR BETTER YET, SLAG IT!
the only people who have reason probably are Dancer, and Holiday since she was an obsidian slave. But even then, Holiday you don’t fucking know her girl, so your questioning of her loyalty early in the book is stupid. To put it simply.
Dancer, however, I feel your frustration. And I get it. But, look around the room please, because there are other Golds standing beside you that ALSO benefitted from your struggle. NOT JUST VIRGINIA, BITCH!
AND THEY DIDNT REALIZE IT UNTIL THEY MET DARROW. WHO HELPED THEM CHANGE! And they shouldn’t be off the hook, just because they’ve sworn ultimate loyalty to Darrow and his cause and have been by his side since the beginning!
Like, Virginia/Mustang was there too! She has stood by his side. SINCE THE BEGINNING. AND EVEN HELPED THEM ALL IMAGINE A WORLD WHERE CHAINS DON’T KEEP THEM RESTRAINED.
SHE GAVE YOU ALL FREEDOM TOO! SHE BELIEVES IN DARROWS VISION TOO!
Because why else should she go against her brother in the Institute so Darrow could win! Why else would negotiate a peace deal with Quicksilver ??? Huh! HUH!
GIVE MY GIRL A BREAK!
SHE HAS DONE NOTHING WRONG BESIDES BE ABSENT FOR CERTAIN PERIODS. Which I don’t blame her for because she had reason to!
GIVE HER SOME BLOODYDAMN RESPECT!
Your scorn, suspicion, distrust is fucking childish and stupid and I’ve bloodydamn have had enough!
okay I just finished Golden Son, the second book in the red rising trilogy and wanted ask if anyone else was a confused by Mustangs presence in Darrow’s room post the Iron Rain ???
Like why is she there? Isn’t she supposed to be giving him the cold shoulder? Wasn’t that what she was doing pre-iron rain? Because Darrow wasn’t opening up to her, after repeated tries. Like what all were all those exchanges of him reaching out and her given him cold responses, huh? You know, the long pause and extended ring of her radio before responding to him. Huh, is this not a sign of her distancing herself? Did anyone interpret it this way?
Because if that’s true, then she shouldn’t have been in the room with Darrow after woke up, because at that point they were being cold to one another, he wasn’t opening up and she was having enough, as far as I could tell, and this something they both seem to suddenly forget about in The Sea. I don’t get it.
Why the 180 switch? Because he fell out of the sky? Almost died? like, okay girl, I know you care about him, you’ve made that clear, and I know you may have almost lost him, but like this makes you want to climb into bed with him and accidentally fall asleep still after he’s kept you at arms length, keeping a secret from you? I thought you were setting a boundary, wasn’t that what you meant when Darrow tried to apologize to you, after he shut you out. I’m confused ???
Does anyone feel like this doesn’t make sense?
Because I was if I were in her shoes, the most I would do is maybe check up on him briefly but I wouldn’t accidentally fall asleep next to the guy who has been keeping me at arms length the entire book! I wouldn’t be in the room when he woke ups that makes more sense to me. At least to keep consistent with how things were between us pre iron rain. Ya know.
I would have him seek me out. If anything.
And that’s how I feel should have happened instead, the more I think about it.
Darrow should have taken smaller steps to reconcile with Mustang after he woke instead of him straight up pulling her into bed with him.
I’m sorry, I feel like too much strain has already happened in their relationship at this point of the story to have them, suddenly forget all of it, and make love for the first time.
To me it feels cheap. I don’t feel Darrow deserves to get “that” after how he’s treated her throughout the book. But don’t get me wrong, I adore Darrow as a character. He’s got a great moral compass, he’s a great respectful man…literally that scene of him returning home, visiting the site of where he last laid with his wife Eo, to ask her permission…mwah. One of the most beautiful scene of the book! I can’t get over it! I know he had his reasons fears for not telling her obviously, and I GET IT!
BUT, a conversation initiated from Darrow would’ve been better, maybe? I don’t think them sharing a moment like that, fits. To be honest, it would have been better if it never happened at all.
But as a disclaimer: I didn’t feel this way when I originally read the chapter. I was glad they made up. But the more I think about it, the more I find it odd.
Anyone feel me ???
currently reading through the red rising trilogy/saga and wondering if anyone else has pictured Mustang/Virginia Au Augustus as like a Nordic warrior princess/viking shieldmaiden/astrid from How To Train Your Dragon?
yeah, the “I’d burn it all down” line was cool. But, like, wait until we hear the “NO ONE TOUCHES HER!” line fall from his lips. That my friends, will truly be a monumental moment.
don’t know if anyone else has thought about this but I seriously think Reyna Avila Ramirez Arellano from heroes of olympus and Helene Aquilla from an ember in the ashes would be good allies/even friends…
I mean, come on, Helene’s the empress of the martial empire (which is based on Rome), Reyna is/was praetor of camp Jupiter’s Twelfth Legion (a Roman demigod camp) BOTH are leaders and battlefield warrior queens, they also have each watched their best friends (Jason/Elias) fall in love with different people (Laia/Piper) but not only that, they BOTH also held romantic interest towards said best friends too! Talk about shared heartbreak.
In addition to that, their BOTH incredibly fiercely loyal to their homes and people (Helene to the martial empire/close friends/her family motto “loyal to the end” need I say more; and Reyna to New Rome/Camp Jupiter/those she cares about and has sworn to protect), they BOTH are deeply principled and disciplined (with Reyna believing in law, order, and justice and Helene in freedom and resistance to authority), they BOTH have terrible experiences with grief (Reyna with the loss of her father/loss of Jason/abandonment after the events of SoM/; and Helene with the entire loss of her family/friends/and love of her life, Harper) etc. I could go on but you get the idea.
i’m telling you, if you place these two women in front of a fire, then give them some mugs of hot chocolate, they’d have a lot to discuss.
my one critique of pjo season 2 is that Hylla and Reyna should have gotten more screen time but I guess…we can’t have everything, can we?
goodbye by ramsey from the arcane soundtrack is helene aquilla coded and if you’ve read the aeita series then I suggest you give it a listen bc 1) it’s a great song and 2) helene aquilla, need I say more.
Thank you Sabaa Tahir for allowing Helene Aquilla to SCREAM!
“why are you tired? you haven’t done anything all day” the simple fact that i exist drains me. hope this helps
not gonna lie the show thus far has felt like rick riordan just subtly rewriting his book the way he would do it now to better develop characters and relationships and such and personally i’m here for it because it means we get shit like the consensus song and medusa being a sympathetic villain because girl she was a victim !!
literally cannot wait for percabeth to become the greatest love story to ever love story in television.
I still can't believe her death...
