I like that this quote is gesturing at the Christian cultural belief that underlies it- because that's what "they need to love the person that's killing them" and "Some promise that in the afterlife, after they've been murdered by the people taking resources from them, that they'll go to heaven" of course are about. Turn the other cheek, love thy neighbor as thyself, Jesus loves you and that will save you (i.e. you will go to heaven after you die) so you must share that love with others to save them (proselytize the gospel), etc etc. Years ago someone's video essay introduced me to the idea that after the Western world secularized, society dropped the enshrinement of God as the all-powerful saving force... but kept the worshipful framework around Love as a whole, and especially romantic love, instead. I am no scholar of this part of history so I cannot say how evidence-based this claim is, but the idea that westernized societies worship the idea of love/romantic love (and in the unique way that they do) as a holdover from Christianity has lived rent free in my head ever since, because it would seem to go a long way to explaining why the hell we have these specific problems around the idea of love.

The US government assigns over 1,000 rights/privileges for being legally married to someone. There's no reason they need to all be in one bundle.

But actually, the assignment of those rights and privileges IS marriage in legal terms.

So really, if you want them available without marriage, what you want is to get fucking rid of marriage as a legal construct and set up some better way of distributing rights and privileges necessary for adults to effectively form interpersonal care networks.

so so confused by this culture of amanormativity. i was describing the love i have for my best friend the other day, and someone said "so you love them romantically. that's how it works" and no. no, that's not how it works. at all. intense and profound and overwhelming feelings of friendship and affection and adoration don't automatically tick over into romantic once they reach a certain level. my love for my best friend is deep and strong, and it hits me like a tidal wave sometimes. but it's not romantic

i think the worst part of the "everyone thinks i'm dating my best friend" bit is the amount of people that ask "well if she was gay too you'd want to date her right?" and like no. i'm not attracted to her like that. i'm not settling for best friendship because she likes men. this isn't a second choice. the shape of my love for her is profound and bone deep and wholly platonic. she's not my best friend because girlfriend wasn't an option, she's my best friend because that's how i love her. how i want to and how i choose to love her. day in and day out it's an active and wanted choice, never a concession. with a bond so deep it aches to see her hurt, and it fills my heart endlessly to see her happy, and not once have i ever had a romantic thought for her.

Just an FYI—the original intention of this post was to challenge the way people say only friends, as though friendship is somehow lesser than other forms of love. As if being deeply known, cherished, and chosen by another person could ever be a small thing. Normalize profound platonic love. Some of the most fulfilling, transformative, and enduring relationships we will ever have are friendships. 🫶🏼

I think asexuals across the favorable-averse spectrum could benefit from accepting that asexuality is a different experience for different people, and we should be able to talk about our experiences without a plethora of disclaimers attached. If I see a post along the lines of "the asexual urge to write the horniest fic possible" I recognize that while that is not at all my experience of asexuality, it is theirs, and I don't feel a need to say "hang on, that's not the case for everyone, that's just your experience, don't generalize!" Because they are making a post about themself and others like them, not about me. And along these same lines, when an asexual conflates their asexuality with their disinterest in/dislike of sex, perhaps you could simply assume that that is their experience, and that those things are intertwined for them, even if they didn't add seven disclaimers about how being favorable is also Real and Valid and Awesome and Cool. Like, maybe they're talking about them, not being sex-negative and invalidating You Personally. (Maybe non-favorable aces should not be constantly presumed to be puritanical sex-negative prudes for vocalizing any distaste for sex, and expected to affirm sex-positivity at every opportunity, as if it's an activism membership card that absolves us of the terrible sin of not being too enthusiastic about sex.)

an important note: true sex positivity revolves around each individual’s sexual autonomy—including both the autonomy to own their own sexuality with pride, and the autonomy to avoid discussions of sex and not have or want sex. anyone who accuses aces of puritanism or sex negativity simply for not wanting to be directly involved in discussions of sex or participate in sexual acts is not practicing sex positivity, they’re just being an aphobic asshole. sex positivity isn’t about “not being a prude,” it’s about destroying rape culture and culturally mandated sexual repression, neither of which requires EVERYONE to have, want, or even talk about sex.

b4 someone says “just curate ur internet experience,” first of all this also happens in person, second of all, like, yes, everyone has a responsibility to butt out when a discussion doesn’t include them directly, but when someone is speaking directly to an asexual about sex and that ace says “i don’t want to hear about that,” that’s not fucking sex negativity it’s making a request that should be honored by any sex positive person worth their salt.
