I don’t understand people. They yell out saying “wear what you want. Be proud of who you are & your interests. Freedom of speech” but then turn around & scream at someone for wearing something not related to their culture…like…??? I wore it because I like it, not to offend you
Your intent doesn’t mater:
“people will frequently argue that a particular statement or action doesn’t constitute racism because racism wasn’t intended. As noted elsewhere, in Human Rights law and anti-racism education, intentionality is irrelevant. It is the effect/impact of the action on the target person/group that is to be considered and takes precedence.”
and the effect/impact of appropriation?
“Two ways in which cultural appropriation can be harmful are easily identified. The first sort of harm is violation of a property right … The second sort of harm is an attack on the viability or identity of the cultures or their members. Appropriation that undermines a culture in these ways would certainly cause devastating and clearly wrongful harm to members of the culture … Other acts of appropriation potentially leave members of a culture exposed to discrimination, poverty and lack of opportunity.” - from The Ethics of Cultural Appropriation (edited by Young and Brunk)
Tangible harm, not personal offense is the issue behind what makes appropriation a bad thing.
Your right to free expression ends when it infringes on the rights of members of marginalized groups to live without discrimination or poverty.
I disagree with this on a fundamental level. The right to free speech should never be infringed. To any degree. The moment someone is able to say “hey, your opinion offends me.” And the individual gets ‘in trouble’ for said opinion. The concept of free speech is null and void.
Free speech no matter how upset it may make someone is a corner stone to a free and unsuppressed society.
Regardless of how ‘offended’ someone may be, they have NO right to force I or anyone to be unable to say what they wish.
I take that with all the good and all the 'bad’ that may come with it.
“Those who would sacrifice liberty for security, deserve neither.” - Good ol’ Ben Franklin
You can disagree all you like but the reality exists that there are limits to free speech, unless you live in a fantasy land. More importantly, ALL rights end when they begin to infringe on the rights of others, that’s how it works. “One man’s freedom ends where another’s begins ” is the relevant adage.
As I clearly explained an you obviously couldn’t or didn’t read: Tangible harm, not personal offense is the issue behind what makes appropriation a bad thing. This isn’t a matter of opinion like what ice cream flavor is best, this is a matter of people causing tangible harm to others. Nice strawman argument and non sequitur.
Debating something like this with you is the real world equivalent to repeatedly running my knuckles over a cheese grater.
A clear reminder as to why I avoid these situations, my desire to argue almost instantly deteriorates as I see how futile my efforts are.
The reality exists there should be no limits to speech or opinions. Regardless of how "offended" someone may be.
There is no tangible harm. It's your choice to be offended.
I can't be bothered so I shan't be replying to any other nonsense you send off.
Live well with your belief and I'll live well with mine.
I've made my opinion clear you've made yours. We'll always disagree.
