How do you feel about Charming?
It was home, he supposed, though he hadn’t thought a lot about the idea of home for a while. This was it, but mostly because he didn’t have anywhere else to go after he had resigned from active duty. He had joined the army young, straight after residency, because he was desperate to leave everything behind. Well, he’d done that, but it was all for nothing, since he was back here with even more baggage.
“Charming’s home, and it’s always been home. I’m never going to pretend like it’s not.”
How do you feel about the Devil’s Disciples and the Wicked Wolves?
He visibly shifted his jaw, clenching his teeth behind tightly pressed lips. His father had been a Disciple, back in the day, and he had hated all of it. He hated it up until the day his father was killed, and he hated it even more after that.
“They’re a fucking plague on this town. Half my patients come in because of them. They’re tearing this place apart.”
What’s the most important thing to you?
His job was the only thing that kept him sane most days, and he was thankful for the fact. He knew how the human body worked, knew how to take it apart and put it back together in almost any situation. That was what happened when you were a surgeon overseas—you saw everything. He found comfort in that. He found comfort in the cold metal of a scalpel, the cool air of an OR. He found peace there.
What are you most scared of?
“Not having a plan. I can’t stand it.”
Everything was regimented out for him when he was in the army. It was easier that way, easier to live when he didn’t have to make any decisions. Now, he had too many decisions to make, and if he didn’t make them in advance, he went into a meltdown. He needed to have that small comfort, at least.
Do you have any plans for your future?
“I don’t know, man, I’ll get old and die. Just like everyone else.”
Axel was happy staying where he was, perfectly in his carved out niche in Charming. He could take care of his little sister when he was home, and he could make sure that she was safe until she left for college—hopefully far away. And he’d keep doing surgeries and he’d keep going to work every day and hopefully it would all be…uneventful.
If you could have a million dollars right now, what would you do with it?
“I’d send my sister to school somewhere far away. Maybe one of those fancy boarding schools in L.A. I’d move with her, too. Maybe start doing some research. That was what I always wanted to do—research.”
But it was far, far too late now.
