back when they were still close, sirius would joke around with regulus, pretending to be a paparazzi following him everywhere with his phone, begging to take his picture.

eventually, regulus had enough. He snatched the phone out of sirius's hand and, with an exasperated sigh, turned the camera on himself. He clicked a single photo, wearing the same stone faced expression he always did, though his eyes gave him away, with a barely restrained laughter.

years later, sirius is disowned, and regulus is gone, it's the only photograph he has of his little brother.

ramble alert: i see regulus as such a love seeker type of character (if you don't like him just pls keep scrolling and save me from your hate because i adore him)

like, we can see in canon how lonely and strict sirius's childhood was. they were raised in a family that would erase their entire existence at the first sign of contradiction, and that taught them blood purity above everything else. and i think that sirius being sorted into gryffindor was kinda his way out, because it allowed him to get to know other life-changing points of view (just like andromeda did when she met ted).

but i think that regulus never had that chance. instead, he was a teenager introduced to a young, charming leader whose ideals were everything his family ever supported. tom was magnetic, and regulus was so love starved that i think he mistook his "kindness" for actually caring. when sirius says he was "soft enough to believe them", i see it as exactly that: tom offered attention when all regulus knew was obsolescence, and charisma when all regulus knew was apathy.

but the most interesting thing of all is how his search for love is also what breaks his tie with tom. because when voldemort hurts the only real connection that regulus has (now that his brother is gone), when he hurts kreacher (just a "servant"), the whole thing falls apart. his relationship with a house elf, so far "below" him, was still above all the shitty, made up ideals he had about voldemort.

and the fact that he was so fucking smart to find out about the horcruxes and go look for them all alone literally hunts me. he was a smart, young, lonely boy who died without anyone knowing that the last thing he did was actually the right thing. he died alone.

I’m a big fan of the whole “Sirius and Regulus have a fight after years of not talking, and reg thinks Sirius hates him, but then Sirius reveals he has something for Reg tattooed somewhere he needs to present bc it isn’t visible when he’s fully dressed or wtv” but,

What about Sirius that has multiple tattoos in visible places for Reg, and Regulus stares hard at them whenever he sees them, but it doesn’t help. It doesn’t save him, because he can’t be saved. It makes everything he needs to do worse, honestly, and sometime during the war, Regulus can’t help himself and watches Sirius from the bushes like a creepy little gnome and finds Sirius with a large, visible, new tattoo for Reg, and it makes his breath catch in his lungs and his arm hurt and it can’t save him. His brother’s love can’t outweigh the expectations of his parents. His brother’s love can’t erase the writhing mark on his arm. His brother’s love can’t fend off the inferi. His brother’s love can’t give him oxygen under the water.

Regulus knows his brother loves him, and because they are who they are, and are from where they’re from, it doesn’t do anything but bring them more pain.

sirius is completely and utterly unhinged btw but like in a way that is so completely loveable and endearing regardless of how utterly stupid he’s acting.

regulus however is so completely and utterly unhinged that he makes sirius look well-adjusted and reasonable and also simultaneously incredibly rude and off-putting (defence mechanism obvs) but he is still loveable and endearing, not despite the way he acts, but because of it.
