Axion

A MEDITATIVE EXPLORATION OF THE SCIENTIFIC METHOD AND HUMAN METAMORPHOSIS, AXION INVITES A PLAYER TO IMMERSE THEMSELVES IN A UNIQUE AUDIOVISUAL WORLD AND REFLECT ON THEIR JOURNEY. Axion is a unique, app-based interactive documentary. Players explore a series of environments to gradually discover documentary content featuring scientists and researchers working in the fields of dark matter and dark energy, as well as experiencing abstract content that reacts to and informs these interviews. In addition to allowing the player to consciously explore, the app will also attempt to infer the user's state of mind using EEG biofeedback, and choose experiences that he or she may be more receptive to. This guarantees that no two players can have the same experience, and that even a single player will have different experiences each time they play. By allowing a player to discover the thoughts and statements of these scientists, we hope to draw a parallel between the visual poetry and the scientific language, illuminating a creative and expressive side of the discussion that is often not showcased, or that most people outside the scientific community do not hear. We want to leave the viewer not with answers, but with a sense that it is acceptable to be uncertain - realizing that the method of science is not the ultimate source of answers, but rather a way to ask questions.

Went to JPL yesterday to show the Axion demo to Jason Rhodes and Alina Kiessling, two of the scientists that generously donated their time to be a part of this project.

Axion won the NDPC special award for the best project at Filmteractive last month in Lodz, Poland. Jasmine and Julian were there to pitch Axion to the world, and we could not have asked for better representatives!

Last month the Axion team was in Southern California filming interviews with some incredible people working at the forefront of dark matter and dark energy research. We would like to thank Dr. Sarah Miller at UC Irvine and Caltech,  Dr. Jennifer Siegal-Gaskins at Caltech, Dr Jason Rhodes at JPL, and Dr. Alina Kiessling at JPL. They contributed a ton of useful information and insight, and we cannot wait to share their interviews as we begin to sift through them.

Our first public demo since CERN was yesterday at TFI Interactive Playground. We got a ton of very useful feedback, a long log-file of the app's functionality, and a lot of very positive reactions. Stay tuned for more updates!
