Revelation of Ancient Seals
One of my favorite cylinder seals from ancient Mesopotamia depicting the sacred mushroom. The interesting thing about this seal is that I drew a similar image before; a petroglyph from rock art in the Sahara Desert...

Unlocking Ancient Seals
Achaemenid cylinder seal impression depicting an Ark of the Covenant like design, depicting a man (presumably a god / king with a crown) standing on the head of two sphinxes (Cherubim) having subdued two beasts, with a Tree of Life design also portraying mushrooms as a covenant and communion with Nature / God. All the elements in this scene can have allegorical significance proclaiming the king to be a hero who rules in grace and who can subdue evil. The presence of wings symbolize a spiritual entity.
Many researchers have suggested that the divine “drink of immortality” - whether known as Soma, Haoma, Amrita, Ambrosia, or Nectar - was a fungus or, more precisely, a psychoactive mushroom (Graves 1957**). Even the tree of knowledge has been interpreted as a fly agaric mushroom, and Christianity as originally a secret mushroom cult. Similarly, the Sufis are said to have employed mushrooms, which they called the “bread of crows,” so that they could know God (Shah 1980, 104 ff.*).

Stonehenge Mushrooms
According to Nicklas Failla, author of "The Origins of Religion", spores that fall to the ground from a mushroom cap will often form a circular network of mycelium beneath the ground, and over time as mushrooms grow from these mycelium rings, the rings will grow out as the mycelium ages. So the size of the ring indicates the age of the mycelium patch, similar to the rings in a trunk of a tree. It just so happens that one of the largest fairy rings in the world surrounds the megalithic monument of Stonehenge (Roman Vishniac, 1966)(Nicklas Failla, 2015 p.8).
Stonehenge Mushrooms
Gerald Hawkins, along with researchers such as Sir Norman Lockyer, Alexander Thom, Gerald Vaucouleurs, C. A. Newham, W. Windwood Reade, and Christian Ratsch, has come closest to answering this key question. These researchers have established beyond doubt that the stones are arranged in a complex pattern related to major astronomical events, and the religious rituals that were carried out within the circle of stones were timed to coincide with these important occasions, regarded as sacred by our ancestors.

Laser scanning has revealed 72 undiscovered Bronze Age carvings on five of Stonehenge's giant stones, the new images, found on the monument which were originally built in the third millennium BCE as a solar temple, portray mushrooms (you can clearly make out mushroom caps and veil in many of the petroglyphs on the monuments).

Sacred Centers - Mushroom Pillars of Göbekli Tepe
All geomantic schemes involve belief in an omphalos, or “world naval,” an Axis Mundi - the sacred center of the world from which order was created out of chaos. The holy center of Jerusalem - sacred to Judaism, Christendom, and Islam alike - is one place that has been considered the site of the omphalos. Another world navel was at Delphi in Greece. The omphalos there is a richly carved stone. The Ka’aba at Mecca in Saudi Arabia contains an omphalos fashioned from a meteorite.
The notion of ancient monuments as focal points of energy has gained popularity with researchers in recent years. One theory is that a “universal force,” said to underlie all material objects, is especially concentrated in the sacred places. This force, unknown to modern science, was allegedly acknowledged in the past and sensed by worshipers at the ancient religious sites. Most traditional peoples have, or have had, a name for some sort of mysterious life force. The Chinese feng-shui geomancers, as we have seen, had ch’i, the same energy supposedly involved in acupuncture. The Australian Aborigines have kurunba, which they believe is concentrated at their totem sites. In Japan the force is known as ki, and martial arts adepts can project this force from their hands. North American Indian tribes had at least a dozen names, such as po-wa-ha, manitou, and maxpe, for “the force that was with them” in life.
The Meaning of the Megaliths - The Spirit of Nature
I remember walking down to the great Gobekli Tepe stone circle with it’s mushroom pillars, dotting the landscape like a Stone Age megalithic fairy ring in the moonlight... their dark shadows a reminder of their darker past and our ignorance of their makers and builders.
The megaliths, ancient standing stones often sited in the wild and isolated locations, exert a strange fascination for modern man. They are a testament to forms of knowledge, ceremony, and ritual that are now buried in a perplexing past. We are only beginning to understand the immensely important role psychoactive fungi have played in human cultures. The branch of science that investigates these questions was founded by an American banker, R. Gordon Wasson (1898– 1986), and is known as ethnomycology (Riedlinger 1990**). Those psychedelic or entheogenic mushrooms that contain psilocybin and psilocin have had the greatest impact upon the history of culture (Metzner 1970**).

The monuments of antiquity are connected with ancient humanity’s deep rooted interest in the Spirit of Nature, they are coded messages in stone, recording this sacred knowledge for posterity.
The worship of animal spirit companions and the concept of human-animal transformation is so ancient, that the origins of these beliefs appear to predate the development of agriculture. The encoded images of hallucinogenic mushrooms associated with feline deities and the Tree of Life are found in both the Old World, and the the New World, where a common motif in Olmec art represents the mushroom's effect of jaguar transformation and the soul's mythical underworld journey.
Archaeologist Michael D. Coe (1972) demonstrated a long-standing Mesoamerican association of the jaguar with rulership, royal lineages, and power, having an intimate relationship with the sun in the underworld, the Jaguar Sun God (John B. Carlson 1981, p.125).

On the surface of the planet previously unmarked by humankind, great monuments arose...
The quantity and quality of these structures, produced with only limited technology, is astonishing. The most famous sites represent only a tiny fraction of the total of these that have survived. There are over 900 stone circles in the British Isles, for instance, and more than 800 in the West African region of Senegambia. Even in our modern age, we can gaze in awe at the work and skill that went into the creation of a mighty megalithic monument such as Gobekli Tepe, in Turkey, and it’s mushroom pillars, or Stonehenge, in southern England with it’s Bronze Age mushroom carvings. There are two questions that unavoidably come to mind when contemplating these ancient sites: how were they built, and why?

The ancient stone statues that litter the barren, rocky landscape of Easter Island, in the South Pacific, pose an unsolved problem. They stand between 12 and 15 feet high and the largest of them weighs more than 80 tons. They were carved from rock from the dormant crater of a volcano, and we know that some were moved up to 10 miles away from the crater to their present position.

"In examining these mushroomic artifacts we must keep in mind that they were not made for our enlightenment. They were iconic shorthand summarizing a whole bundle of associations ,--whatever those associations were. The Christian cross is to be found in endless shapes, including the "effigy cross" or crucifix, and all stem back to a complex of emotions, beliefs, and religious longings. The crucifix would reveal to an archaeologist eons hence more than, say, a Maltese cross. So with the mushroom stones, the subject matter of the effigies holds the secret".

Not only is the whole pillar itself shaped like a mushroom, but upon closer observation there is also a representation of various animals, particularly cattle, which was always associated with many various mushroom based religions of the past.
The sacred sites of banished peoples and lost civilizations are scattered across the globe, enigmatically punctuating the landscape, Gobekli Tepe, Stonehenge, Chichen Itza - what can these monuments of the past tell us of the wisdom of their ancient builders?
In the earliest times, when humans lived in roaming of hunters and gatherers, their sacred places were natural sites, such as springs, caves, peaks, trees, or rocky outcrops, which were thought to be inhabited by a god or spirit. But from about 9000 B.C.E., when people in Europe and Asia started settling down to farm the soil - the dawn of what archeologists call the Neolithic or New Stone Age - certain cultures began instead to build their sanctified places. On the surface of a planet previously almost unmarked by the activities of humankind, over the next 7,000 years great monuments arose. They ranged from large stones (megaliths), either erected singly or in gaunt stone circles and rows, much like the mushroom circles or fairy rings, to the sophisticated masonry of Egyptian and Mayan pyramids and classical Greek temples. Our ancestors also created earthworks, drawing vast and complex images on the ground, and raising mounds to mark burial places and other sacred sites.

Not only is the whole pillar itself shaped like a mushroom, but upon closer observation the whole veil pattern of the mushroom represents the mushroom's mycelium network fruiting dozen little mushrooms.
