Okay, so I just happened to stumble upon some people who still hated 5SOS because their video for Jet Black Heart didn’t have like a story line and were complaining why they asked for stories from fans but didn’t put them in.
Now, I just want to tell everyone how this video actually portray 5SOS as musicians. 5SOS do not just create music that tell a story about love or something like that. Moreover, they just don’t create a music video to just represent the story of each song. Instead, they do a music video that makes us open our eyes to the harsh realities of this world and how we can lend a hand on solving this. This is evident even from the self-titled era. You see, the SLSP video was made for us to appreciate all body types - whether you’re fat, skinny, flawless, or wrinkled. Then there’s the Don’t Stop video which reminds us that however small one good act is, it still is a step on making a good change in the world. Every one can become a hero in their own little ways. And then, we have the Good Girls video, which breaks all the norms society has assigned genders.
Moving on to the New Broken Scene era/ the Sounds Good Feels Good period which was actually topped off by She’s Kinda Hot, telling a message that even if you’re a person who is considered an outcast by society because you do not fit in with its set standards, it’s okay. We’ll be okay. This is then closely followed by Hey Everybody!, where being broke isn’t then end of the world. Problems we face aren’t a reason for us to give up.
This time around, we have Jet Black Heart, wherein a couple of weeks prior to its release, 5SOS had asked for their stories on how the album and this song means to them. If for a second you think that no one’s story is there in the video, think again. The video actually showed a diversity of people. Different races, different religions, different cultures. Every fan in the video was a representation. You see, there was a black person in there, then there was a Muslim in there. This is the difference 5SOS makes. Every representation makes us realize how many people suffer so many stuff. This actually represents the story of how much these people are being denied of so many stuffs in the world. Think of how Black people are being denied of some stuff because of their skin color. Think of how many people are so afraid to be near Muslims because they portray them as terrorists and can kill them anytime. These are the stories that 5SOS show us in the video. That all of us have pain. All of us struggle at times. Yet they want us all to be one. Even with these kind of people. They are making the world - all races, all colors, all religions, all genders, all kinds of people - one with their music.
As to quote Ashton himself, “We are one world! We are united as the youth. All different cultures, races, religions.”
Now, think again. If this video isn’t an amazing video for you, then I do not know what is.
