I’m sure I’m not the first one to say this, but I can’t listen to Willing and Able by Noah Kahan without thinking about the Coltland twins.
Verse 1 is from Rylands point of view after Colts fall. He took a leave of absence from teaching to help Colt, but of course Colt hated that, so he did all he could to push Ryland away - yelling, fighting, ignoring - until Ry gave up and left. Ry gave it a week before reaching out again, but Colt ignored his attempts, quietly furious at both himself and Ryland.
Then Ryland gets recruited for the Petrova Taskforce, and the calls become less and less frequent. Colt goes through the events of The Fall Guy, and comes out of it knowing that he had been wrong to push Ryland away, and that the year and a half they spent apart was the worst 18 months of his entire life.
But as he tries to reach out to Ryland, the news shows the launch of the Hail Mary, with replacement science officer Dr. Ryland Grace aboard.
Cue to verse 2, where Colt goes through the 5 stages of grief all out of order. Hes angry at the fact that Ryland would leave him again, furious that the world is calling him a hero. Cause how could he be a hero when he left Colt alone without saying goodbye? He cries and begs and wakes up reaching for his phone to call Ryland before remembering that the call won’t go through. Will never go through.
Colt never fully reaches acceptance of what happened. Instead, he sits on the beach at night, staring up at the stars, begging Ryland to come home. To send him a message of any sort.
“If you’re willing, I’m able”
something that i DO find fascinating abt both phm and interpretations of it is when folks say things along the lines of “the point of grace’s lack of attachments isn’t that he’s aroace, the point of grace’s lack of attachments is that he’s refused to open himself up enough to form ANY close bonds because he’s a coward” because like. not only is it very possible for both to be true, i think that reading both as being the case continues to enhance the story AND speaks a very honest truth about how being aroace might have affected his life?
like. imagine you are grace. you have a life you enjoy where you get to teach kids you’re fond of about a subject you love. you’ve been hanging out with your friend marissa weekly for years (!) and you have a lot of peers on project hail mary who you respect and even have fun with. but! you’re also like 40, and you know how the world works - at the end of the day, at the end of the project, all of those people will go back to their parents and families and partners. the people whose names are on their emergency contact forms and birth certificates and marriage licenses and apartment leases. no matter how much you care about them, and no matter how much they care about you, there is always someone else in their life who is Above you, and Before you, because That’s How The World Works.
so like… yeah. lmao. aroace grace not opening himself up all the way because he anticipates pain and wants to avoid that is a kind of protective hedging that i find very likely for him to engage in? even if he opens himself up to the people around him, the fact is that most of those people will only reciprocate to whatever degree they/society deem acceptable for friendship, even if they like him a lot.
which is why, imo, the very careful portrayal of grace and rocky’s friendship in the phm film reads as extremely aroace-coded. because it’s not “rocky specifically is Special and Likable in a way which fixes all of grace’s hangups and allows him to open up” - it’s “rocky has a partner to go home to, but on multiple occasions, puts grace Above and Before that in a way which grace is unused to, because grace comes from a society which culturally and legally devalues the types of relationships he wants and holds most dear.” and once rocky shows that he is willing to reciprocate friendship and care to a degree grace could never expect from anyone on earth, grace no longer needs to maintain the kind of emotional defenses he always has. grace likes rocky and wants to be friends from the moment they meet, of course, but only lets himself form SUCH a close bond after rocky demonstrates that he, too, does not place an earth-society-style limit on the strength of their friendship. and they’re both better off for it!
Happy pride!
Tonight’s thoughts as we’re hitting the half way point of pride month.
the bravest human
shoutout to project hail mary for showing one of the biggest and what sometimes feels like most unattainable aroace fantasies coming true: having a best friend who doesn't value you less than their romantic partner.
Stop leaving this GAS in the tags
Already know I wanna send this to people on June 1
ITS TIME
[Video description: A short clip from the show Make Some Noise. Erika Ishii, imitating Ebenezer Scrooge, points dramatically and yells, "You, boy! What day is it?" Brennan responds, "It's pride, bitch!" End description.]
rocky’s design notes from james ortiz’ instagram :) going insane at the reason rocky put two arms together when giving his name was to show his family crest
One of the reasons people headcanon Grace as aromantic is the unfortunately realistic scene where they go "you don't have a family or a loved one" as if that's enough of a justification to send him on a suicide mission. As if not having a family makes Grace inherently less valuable and means he should be more willing to sacrifice himself for the greater good.
Grace wasn't sad and lonely, he was happy, he had a good life, he very much did not want to die. They have to do a looney tunes chase sequence and drug him because Grace was *very* unwilling to be the sacrificial lamb. Humanity's savior was dragged kicking and screaming into the role and called selfish for daring to be a coward, as if most of us wouldn't be.
And then he befriends Rocky, who never demands a sacrifice from him, who willingly prolongs his journey home so Grace can go back to his. Rocky has a mate back home and his species depends on his return, and still risks his life to save his squishy human friend. And Grace returns the favor.
And thus the power of friendship saves two planets.
I'm a bit delighted by the fact that the core of this show is still those two wandering the contintent, not gonna lie
Not sure if it's just me, but I'm 3 months on testosterone and my sneezes are so much more violent than before. Like I can't sneeze quietly to save my life these days.
I GOT A FUCKING RAISE THE POTATO WORKED WTF
This potato works. Every. Fucking. Time.
keep seeing posts about how something is missing from the recent daredevil episodes like YEAH HIS NAME IS FOGGY NELSON 😭😭😭
The longer I sit with the final episode of Born Again the more upset I am. It was fine, but so much of the tension that was building during the season seemed to just.. vanish. The inciting incident of the entire series was Foggy getting shot and Matt not dealing with his grief. And yet within a day of talking with Karen everything is fixed. It feels hollow. Why kill off Foggy, “the heart of the MCU” if his death isn’t actually going to mean anything at the end of the day. And why tease the fans with comic references and press tours with the trio if Foggy is only in 10 minutes.
The season was fine, but at the end of the day I don’t want to watch a Daredevil show without Foggy Nelson. They had the perfect opportunity to reveal that he’s alive, or to give some hint that he is, to set up the next season being about Matt and Karen finding him and using the evidence he found on Red Hook to take down Fisk’s growing empire. But instead we get The Punisher in a cage, a small group of cops who are gonna fix the city I guess, and a show that utterly disrespected Foggy Nelson.
Anywho. Anyone got any fix-it fics they can send my way to get through these trying times?
