Things Biden and the Democrats did, this week. #6
Feb 16-23 2024
The EPA announced 5.8 billion dollars in funding upgrade America's water systems. 2.6 billion will go to wastewater and stormwater infrastructure, while the remaining $3.2 billion will go to drinking water infrastructure. $1 billion will go toward the first major effort to remove PFASs, forever chemicals, from American drinking water. The Administration all reiterated its plans to remove all lead pipes from America's drinking water systems, its spent 6 billion on lead pipe replacement so far.
The Department of Education announced the cancellation of $1.2 billion in student loan debt reliving 153,000 borrowers. This is the first debt cancellation through the Saving on a Valuable Education (SAVE) Plan, which erases federal student loan balances for those who originally borrowed $12,000 or less and have been making payments for at least 10 years. Since the Biden Administration's more wide ranging student loan cancellation plan was struck down by the Supreme Court in 2023 the Administration has used a patchwork of different plans and authorities to cancel $138 billion in student debt and relieve nearly 4 million borrowers, so far.
First Lady Jill Biden announced $100 million in federal funding for women’s health research. This is part of the White House Initiative on Women’s Health Research the First Lady launched last year. The First Lady outlined ways women get worse treatment outcomes because common health problems like heart attacks and cancer are often less understood in female patients.
The Biden Administration announced 500 new sanctions against Russian targets in response to the murder of Russian dissident Alexei Navalny. The sanctions will target people involved in Navalny's imprisonment as well as sanctions evaders. President Biden met with Navalny's widow Yulia and their daughter Dasha in San Francisco
The White House and Department of Agriculture announced $700 Million in new investments to benefit people in rural America. The projects will help up to a million people living in 45 states, Puerto Rico, and the Northern Mariana Islands. It includes $51.7 million to expand access to high-speed internet, and $644.2 million to help 158 rural cooperatives and utilities provide clean drinking water and sanitary wastewater systems for 578,000 people in rural areas.
The Department of Commerce signed a deal to provide $1.5 billion in upgrades and expand chip factories in New York and Vermont to boost American semiconductor manufacturing. This is the biggest investment so far under the 2022 CHIPS and Science Act
the Department of Transportation announced $1.25 billion in funding for local projects that improve roadway safety. This is part of the administration's Safe Streets and Roads for All (SS4A) program launched in 2022. So far SS4A has spent 1.7 billion dollars in 1,000 communities impacting 70% of America's population.
The EPA announced $19 million to help New Jersey buy electric school buses. Together with New Jersey's own $45 million dollar investment the state hopes to replace all its diesel buses over the next three years. The Biden Administration's investment will help electrify 5 school districts in the state. This is part of the The Clean School Bus Program which so far has replaced 2,366 buses at 372 school districts since it was enacted in 2022.
Bonus: NASA in partnership with Intuitive Machines landed a space craft, named Odysseus, on the moon, representing the first time in 50 years America has gone to the moon. NASA is preparing for astronauts to return to the moon by the end of the decade as part of the Artemis program. All under the leadership of NASA Administrator, former Democratic Senator and astronaut Bill Nelson.
meanwhile, things the gop managed to do this week:
i want us to go to the moon
ID for highlighted portion: "turn the strip into a slaughterhouse. If a hair falls from their head — execute security prisoners. Violate any norm on the way to victory. For them to see amd be seen."
[ID: two photos, the first two tweets from February 24th, 2024. Laila Al-Arian (@/LailaAlarian) tweeted: ‘This seems like a big deal and I ask if it goes against the @nytimes policies. As @zei_squirrel found, one of the authors of the “mass rape” story, Anat Schwartz, apparently liked posts saying Gaza should be turned into a “slaughterhouse.” Anat has reported on Palestinians.’ Writers Against the War on Gaza (@/wawog_now) quote tweeted: ‘This is huge. It is a Watergate moment for the New York Crimes. Editor-in-chief Joseph Kahn (@nycscribe)—another Genocide Joe—allowed the @nytimes’s signature piece about October 7 to be co-written by an unabashed Zionist who wants to turn Gaza into a slaughterhouse’.
Attached to the original tweet by Laila is a screenshot of Anat Schwartz's Twitter likes. Featured is a tweet by David Mizrahy Verthaim (@/dverthaim) from October 7th, 2024. The tweet reads: ‘And after I talked about unity, one principle that needs to be abandoned today: proportionality. Need a disproportionate response. May Israel see what she is hiding in the basement. If all the captives are not returned immediately, turn the strip into a slaughterhouse. If a hair falls from their head - execute security prisoners. Violate any norm, on the way to victory. For them to see and be seen. The Jordanians did it to Daesh. I don't remember the king being rude. And who will tell us something? Russia killing the Ukrainians? China? Or maybe Western Europe that allowed Azerbaijan to ethnically cleanse 100,000 people at night. World War II ended with the USA inflicting a holocaust on Hiroshima, and even before giving the Japanese a chance to digest, dropped another bomb on Nagasaki, while promising that every Japanese city would be destroyed until surrender. The Japanese were no less crazy than the Arabs. Arel Segal did not take over my account. Those in front of us are human animals who do not hesitate to violate minimal rules, including the murder of medical staff and babies. This is not passed on.’ END ID]
Here’s a Wired article on it.
Man, it sure is a good thing this exact rhetoric wasn't completely recycled for the 65 years later by the very people who were targeted by that first moral panic.
We definitely don't have widespread panic from social conservatives about how teens are being groomed into being queer by a vast conspiracy that has resulted in action from Congress. Nope. Never happened again.
(watch Matt Baume's video "Is Rebel Without a Cause a Gay Movie?" and then the rest of his videos because they're fantastic)

For those with covid conspiracies, they said Ukraine had secret biolabs. To those obsessed with Trump, they made a whole Hunter Biden extended universe. To those who are anti-nazi, Ukraine is full of Nazis. To those who are Nazis, Ukraine is full of Jews. To those who are anti-LGBT, Ukraine is depraved rainbow orgies and secret sex tunnels. To those who are pro-LGBT, Ukraine is full of homophobia and hate crimes. To those who are pro-NATO, Ukraine is too hopelessly corrupt and backward, to those who are anti-NATO, its ranks are filled with NATO mercenaries, gender-neutral toilets and furry conventions.
Hence the logical conclusion, if all of this is true, is that Ukraine is a hellscape of genetically-modified, CIA-armed, Satanic Nazi transgender Jewish furries slithering forth from sex tunnel biolabs to serve Emperor Biden.
For the Westerners & other people who don't/can't follow russian news and the russian speaking online space:
This is not satire! They do talk like this. They spread this kind of stuff as 'information'.
The only satirical part here is to put it all together in one sentence, but if you split it up into its components, you'll find each of these, broadly pushed and not just one single mention on someone's obscure blog or something, as russian propaganda. It's mind boggling really how that actually works on people but it does!
Ukrainians, do you remember the genetically engineered mosquitoes, that transmit deadly diseases, but only sting people with russian blood (and they do passport and ideology checks too I guess)? Let's look at it this way: According to Russia we're pretty much geniuses, with all the secret weapons and other technologies we've developed by now, in less than two years even, that lie beyond the world's collective scientific knowledge and capabilities. And we're having orgies whenever we're not currently working or plotting. And at least half of us are world class, armed to the teeth secrets agents or something. I'm starting to believe they're actually thinking very highly of us and are really just envious! Haha.
And also, according to russian propaganda, in addition to everything above, Ukrainians don't actually exist, but are just russians fooled to Western propaganda to think they are a separate nation, and russia is determined to keep killing us until whoever remains accepts it.
Yes it is absurd, yes it is contradictory, but you can see how effective it is...
Propaganda doesn’t need to make sense or even be self consistent. It just needs to be dominant.
Those screenshots are from Timothy Snyder’s class on Ukrainian history, which is very much worth watching:
Listen, friends.
Someone is going to be elected president in November. There are going to be two options. There is no world in which someone who is not Biden or the GOP nominee -- presumably, somehow, Trump -- win the election.
Is Biden my favorite politician? No.
Has he accomplished a ton of good things in the last three years? Absolutely yes.
Pretending otherwise is disingenuous and dangerous.
If you do not vote, you are voting for fascism, full stop. Because you know who always shows up to vote? Your shitty racist neighbors, and the white nationalists trying to stop affirmative action, and the homophobic gun owners who want the party that's made dismantling marriage equality and civil protections for queer people a part of their platform, and religious fundamentalists who believe that women should be the subject of their husbands. They vote in drives, because they don't demand perfection from their candidates, just that they hate the same way they do, and do it loudly.
This left wing thing where people yell about how voting for a candidate that doesn't check every box is a valid political protest is deeply stupid and absolutely wrong. All this accomplishes is to discourage voting and make people stop trying to push for better from our politicians.
Not voting for a candidate that doesn't do everything you want them to is giving a point to the one that wants to bring out loud fascism to the US.
There will be a winner in November, and it's going to be A or B. The system sucks, but it's the one we have, and if we don't vote for the one who is actively working for at least some of the right things, we're going to end up with the one that's working for stripping rights away from the majority of Americans.
Just fucking vote.
I’m going to scream. Pushback on the narrative that climate breakdown can be averted by individual decisions centres around the fact that NORMAL PEOPLE do not contribute to a significant amount of carbon emissions cos the average NORMAL PERSON emits 7 tons of CO2 a year. Not Taylor fucking Swift who has emitted over 8000 tons of emissions this year SO FAR. Her CO2 emissions from private jet use alone are equivalent to that of TWO THOUSAND normal people. We absolutely should be blaming individuals if those particular individuals are emitting two thousand people’s worth of emissions.
“We should be addressing structural issues” my brother in Christ widespread private jet use is a structural issue. Celebrity culture and the extravagant lifestyle that comes with it is a structural issue. These are whole industries that are massively impacting climate breakdown but because Taylor happens to be the most egregious case her stans want to pretend it’s not a problem. Stan culture really is a disease
Tread here.
The best part is OP got fired because their boss asked why they weren’t “incorporating blockchain technology” into the video switcher they were building and OP straight up said “you have no idea what you’re talking about” and went to lunch
