Do you believe Daenerys will become the villain?
Depends on your idea of a villain. I would say absolutely not, but that’s because my interpretation of a villain is Ramsay Bolton. Daenerys could never be a Ramsay, she will never turn to full evil, she’ll never cause harm because she enjoys hurting people, because she enjoys seeing others in pain, because she’s pure and simple dark bad guy.
The danger in Daenerys and her behavior is that her actions come from the firm believe that she’s doing the right thing, that she’s justified in her actions, that her goal justifies her means. Someone who believes with all her heart that she’s kind, and a savior, that she’s liberating and rescuing people, doesn’t qualify as a villain to me.
Daenerys is too complex to be ‘the villain’. Her story is not a story of evil, she’s a tragedy. All she tries to save she destroys. All she truly wants she’ll never find. She believes Westeros is her home and murders thousands, mayhaps hundreds of thousands of innocents to get it, only to unavoidably find out it’s not at all her home, nor is she wanted. She doesn’t look back because she believes she’ll get lost, but there will be a moment where she can no longer refuse to turn around, and when she finally does, when she looks her mistakes in the eye, when she’ll realize all the harm she caused, all the people she helped to the grave, all the communities she destroyed… that’s when she’ll lose herself.
Dany may be a hypocrite, delusional, self-centered, aggressive, violent, tyrannical and pretty dumb… she’s also compassionate, caring, fierce, insecure, lonely, horny, loves the sea, dreams of a home… she’s far and far too layered to be just the villain. There’s more to her story, more to her character and frankly… it’s not George rr Martin’s style to turn her into the great evil blood shedding fire bursting monster.
The real question here is not ‘will Daenerys be the villain’ - the real question is, ‘is a person who believes she’s justified and righteous in all the harm she causes not far more dangerous than someone who’s purely in it because (s)he enjoys being bad?’
Daenerys not being the villain makes her as dangerous as she is.
