The quote on both is "Be Bold. No one can hear you if you don't speak" by Julie Noble in her story 'Detail' in the anthology "Common People".

Shy bairns get nowt, is a working class phrase from northeast England which basically means the same thing (translated as shy children get nothing, meaning speak up if you want something). The black paint is symbolic of the black paint written on walls and garage doors telling people not to park there.

We only see tiny pieces of someone's story.

I chopped up "A Million Little Pieces" by James Frey. Pulled out pages at random and collaged pieces from each page. Photocopied the actual collage and framed, splitting it again.

Recycled frame.

Second hand book.

Collaged mainly using a second hand, discarded book I found in the staff room at work.

Cut up into pieces and placed in a recycled frame.
