⚠️LOKI FINALE SPOILERS!!⚠️
I have several points to make.
1. Whether Loki is bi or pan to you, they’re allowed to like multiple genders. Them possibly loving Sylvie isn’t heteronormative, and disliking that ship is not bi/panphobic.
You know what IS bi/panphobic? Disney. Loki and Sylvie’s relationship isn’t heteronormative because it’s a male-presenting person and female-presenting person. No, it’s heteronormative because, despite neither of them being straight and both of them being genderfluid, Disney still pushed their relationship unlike any other. If Loki was female-presenting, LOKIUS WOULD HAVE BEEN CANON. I didn’t ship Lokius until I saw the gifs and such that the Lokius shippers were posting, and to myself, I thought “If one of them was a girl, there would be no question about it that that was supposed to be sexual/romantic.” Loki and Sylvie’s relationship could have been beautiful, if they had worked on it, but it was fast and forced because Disney needs heteronormativity. If Sylvie had been a girl, or Loki, there would have been no romance between them in a show. And everyone knows it.
2. There’s a difference between placating/false advertising to your audience and STRAIGHT UP FUCKING LYING. They said Loki would get no love interest. Then they said he’d get a female AND male love interests at different points. Then they said that Loki and Sylvie’s relationship was not supposed to be perceived as romantic. And maybe it wasn’t, maybe it’s Reylo all over again. Remember that? “It wasn’t supposed to be a romantic kiss, but I suppose you can take it that way” kinda crap?
Like even if it wasn’t supposed to be romantic, then where was the male love interest they promised? It could have been a flashback. A brief picture of a memory. Mobius. Another guy that they could have introduced. Anything. But this was beyond queer baiting. We were queerbaited, lied to that it would not be bait this time, and then we had to watch the series end a) without the male love interest b) with a new “is it or is it not selfcest” argument.
Guys. If you have to argue about whether it’s /technically/ selfcest/incest or not, THEN IT PROBABLY ISN’T OKAY.
3. I am genderfluid. I don’t tell people that anymore. I just say I’m non-binary. Because when I explain that I’m genderfluid, and I explain what it means, most people’s brains seem to go to “oh so if you’re a man AND a woman, you can like,, fuck yourself. Literally”
I don’t know how or why so many people make that connection, but ask any genderfluid person who has come out in public. They’ve probably heard this before.
It’s a stereotype, it’s untrue, it’s bigoted, and it’s ignorant.
I was so excited. My all time favorite character of the last four years at least has been confirmed genderfluid. Hooray for me and my community!! Glorious day!!
And then they did the most harmful, stereotypical thing they could have done.
And this is after they erased Loki’s pansexuality in place of bisexuality. We shouldn’t need to erase one representation in order to have another. There were so many bisexual characters in the comics that they could have made canon. Peter Parker. Tony Stark. Steve Rogers. Just to name a few.
And apparently, now that Deadpool has joined the MCU, they’ve traded his pansexuality for bisexuality as well.
This is blatant homophobia and transphobia. The series was good, but they absolutely ruined the solace and solidarity that I and every other genderfluid and/or pansexual person had in Loki’s identity. As much as I enjoyed the series and would love to see how it continues, I can’t forgive the blatant erasure. I am absolutely crushed.
