Chapter 1 / “Is this a good idea?”
The sound of coffins creaking fills the castle. Leaning forward, Oskar stretches and yawns, stumbling out of his coffin and into the bathroom, his head thumped with pain, he really needs to stop falling on his head so often. “Ugh…my head…” He groans, rubbing his head, his fingers going through his raven messy hair. Looking up at the mirror, he sees only the back of the bathroom wall. Sleepily he grabs his toothbrush and begins his daily routine, as he’s spitting out his toothpaste, a tall dark figure appears behind him.
“BOO!” The figure shouted, nearly knocking Oskar over the head. He whirls around to face the culprit. Not to his surprise it was Stoker, he watched as Stoker cackled a look of annoyance on his face. It was WAY too early for Stoker‘s shenanigans. “ Haha! Your face was priceless! What kind of vampire gets scared so easily?” Oksar rolled his eyes in annoyance, clearly not in the mood for Stoker’s lame pranks. “That’s big talk from a coward.” his face turned smug as he crossed his arms.
After an argument with Stoker which he won, leaving Stoker grumbling and storming away, Oskar got ready to go out. It was a perfect night to visit his love, Sunshine. Before going out he looks around for anybody nearby and stealthily flies off towards the town not far from the castle. He finally lands in an alleyway. He's happily and cautiously walking past the various humans down the sidewalk, trying not to draw attention to himself. He spots sunshine near the cinema and his face instantly lights up.
“Hey, sunshine!” he called out, waving his arm like a dork. Sunshine giggled and waved back, and Oskar could feel his heart flutter. He finally catches up to Sunshine, and they walk together to the park. As they walk, a thought comes to Oskar’s head. ‘what if she found out I was a vampire?’ he never really thought about it that much…but since they are so close he’ll have to confess at some point. Oskar fidgets nervously with his tie as they sit on a bench by the fountain. Sunshine noticed Oskar’s nervousness and put a comforting hand on his shoulder. “Is everything alright, Oskar? You’re paler than you usually are..” Oskar turns to Sunshine, her expression of concern. Oskar stammers a response. “I’m fine Sunshine..” Sunshine can tell he’s troubled by something. “Are you sure? It seems serious…you don’t have to hide anything from me.” Sunshine gives a comforting smile. But he does have to hide from her.
“Don’t worry, Sunshine.” Oskar smiles sheepishly, rubbing the back of his neck. Sunshine narrows her eyes and isn't convinced, but she won’t push further and change the subject. They chatted, joked, and laughed until the moon was high in the air. “I better get going, Sunshine; you know my school rules.” Oskar stands up, straightening his tie. Sunshine pouts playfully.
“Maybe you wouldn’t have to leave so early if you’d come out in the daytime!” sunshine jabbed at Oskar's arm and crossed her arms. Oskar laughed softly, “You know I can only come at night, Sunshine.” At first, Sunshine had a thoughtful look, then her face lit up seemingly thinking of the best plan ever. “What if you…snuck out! Then we’d have hours and hours to hang out!” Oskar thought about it for a bit…yeah no. “I’m sorry sunshine…” Sunshine groans as she stands up, before they part she plants a sweet quick kiss on his cheek, “buh bye~!” she giggles as she skips off. Stunned Oskars face turns beet red. But then the thought lingered back, killing his mood almost instantly, the words ‘you don’t have to hide anything from me’ made him ache. He thought about if he told Sunshine he was a vampire, how would she react, what would she say? How could he possibly even tell her such a thing? He clenched his chest before transforming and flying back to the castle in the crypt he sat on the stone ledge near his coffin, he was alone, at least, he thought he was.
Gothetta, coming back from gardening, sees Oskar slumped over, looking deader than he is. “Oskar? What’s wrong? You look like you ate one of Lenny's ‘experiment dishes’.” She sets the potted carnivorous plant down and approaches Oskar, crossing her arms, but her eyes are caring and soft.Oskar looks up “Oh hey, gothetta…“I’m…” he hesitates before burying his face in his hands.
“How am I supposed to tell her, Gothetta? I can’t keep lying to her.” Oskar choked out, his hands trembling in emotion and slight embarrassment. Gothetta sighed softly with a look of pity on her face. She pinched the bridge of her nose crossing her arms, she couldn’t stand seeing him like this “Look, Oskar. I…I’ll help you.” Oskar's eyes widened as he whirled his head to face gothetta and blinked, stunned. “R-Really?! " He said hopefully, and Gothetta reluctantly nodded in agreement. Oskar beamed and hugged her tightly. Gothetta’s pale cheeks turned rosy as she shyly hugged back. “Thank you so much, Gothetta. You’re an amazing friend.” Her heart ached a little, pulling back from the hug. “No need to thank me yet.” Gothettas expression turned serious, crossing her arms in defiance
“But you do know what might happen after this right?” Oskar looked down, avoiding eye contact, and he nodded solemnly.
“I do. I just hope this is the right decision.”
