(One_Small_Writer on ao3) I loved every single prompt you came up with for @b99fandomevents fic exchange, especially this prompt: a sort of AU of the last day of the academy or something along the lines of that (Graduation maybe?). i wanted to try and do this one justice because jake and rosa’s friendship!!!! JAKE AND ROSA’S FRIENDSHIP!!!! I hope you enjoy it as much as I loved writing it | also on ao3

“A thousand push ups.”

Why that is the moment Jake’s mind chooses to focus on as his closest friend prepares to stand, he really can’t say. Maybe it was the way she said it – so full of truth and so steady. Maybe it was the relief he felt after she spoke. Maybe she could have said anything at all and it was just the fact that she was there. Whatever the reason, those words cast endless vignettes in his mind as he watches her smooth her dress blues. Of the two of them storming through simulations together, of her kicking his butt in defensive training, of him carving tyre marks and shrieking past her on the track. Of a thousand push ups and a million secret curse words hurled at superiors and epically long handshakes.

Five months ago, Jake Peralta met Rosa Diaz in the middle of firearms training. He was standing in the gun range, knuckles white and straining around the weight of a glock in his hands – his hands. His hands, the hands of a kid who almost burned his privates off in high school. He was a jittering bag of nerves as he lined himself up to aim for the silhouette ten metres away. Taking a breath, he tried to steady his shaking hands but holding a gun was all so new that it could never seem natural – but should it ever? He altered his stance, corrected himself at least five times, wondered how John McClane could make this look so easy, then aimed.

And missed.

“What the hell?!” the most terrifying voice he had ever heard yelled from the booth beside him.

Now, five months later and sitting in his dress blues in Madison Square Garden, he can’t believe he’s about to hold a gun for the rest of his life. He’s about to serve and protect his home, the people who live in it, and his hands are shaking again.

“A thousand push ups,” he mumbles to himself.

He looks around the arena to find her already looking straight at him from her place. To anybody else, Rosa Diaz looks strong, stoic, but the last six months have taught him how to know her. She’s strong, obviously, but he can see her nerves in the way she slides her shaky hands in her pockets to hide them. He mimics a push up to make her laugh and her lips twitch for a fraction of a second.

An unashamedly satisfied sigh escapes Amy’s lips as her head sinks into the nearest pillow, the tingles of a Really Good orgasm still echoing through her limbs in the best kind of way. Her breath falls out in weary bursts, hair sweaty when swept away from her forehead, and she drops her hand onto the duvet in defeat. So much for yesterday’s blow-dry lasting the rest of the week.

From his position beside her Peralta shifts, rising up and throwing Amy a gratified smile as he turns onto his side to face her. Her wrist twitches with the desire to sink her index finger into the tiny dimple in his chin as he settles his weight on his left arm, and with butterflies dancing in her stomach Amy clears her throat to speak - already conscious of the lack of conviction in her tone.

“We really should stop doing this.”

Jake’s snorted laugh in response is a little less attractive, unknowingly redeeming himself when he grabs the edge of Amy’s throw blanket and pulls it closer for her to reach (they really had worked out an excellent routine by now). “Funny you should say that, Santiago. Pretty sure it was YOU screaming ‘oh god, don’t stop’ only a few minutes ago.”

Rosa’s plan is just to avoid Amy. She has purposefully arrived at the precinct late, knowing that Amy will already be inside at her desk on the second floor. The parking garage is already full with officers’ cars when Rosa pulls her motorcycle in. It’s a chilly October day, which means that the garage feels cold and damp. Rosa pulls off her helmet, but keeps her aviators on, and crosses her arms to suppress a shiver. She can still feel Amy’s card burning a hole in her pocket, though. The one that invites Rosa to a baby shower in neat, pale green script with a pattern of rubber ducks across the bottom of the thick cardstock.

Rosa’s plan is just to avoid Amy because there’s no way she can explain why the invite makes Rosa want to cry. Or punch something. Or both. And that is far too many feelings for her to ever admit to.

She decides to take the stairs up to the bullpen—that way she can avoid seeing anyone else, too. While Rosa maintains a tough exterior, she’s far from tough on the inside. She hates it, but it’s true. She’s still reeling from her break-up with Jocelyn. Yet another failed relationship. It hurts, so Rosa pushes herself to take the stairs two at a time until she can feel the exertion in her chest. Seeing Amy’s baby shower invitation just reminds Rosa that everyone else in her life is settling down with a partner, and that Rosa is still alone. Amy’s going to go on maternity leave. Then she’ll make Captain. For sure, Amy’s days at the Nine Nine are coming to end. Then, one by one, everyone else will leave, too.

hello! this is for the (final!) @b99fandomevents—i can’t believe how far these two (and this show) have come, and i’m gonna miss them so much. i got to write this for @amydancepants-peralta, who wanted a fic where jake and amy have a disatrous first date, and then amy decides to transfer to chicago—jake has three days to convince her to stay.

It’s their first date, and it’s a disaster.

Neither of them has said anything in the ten minutes since they’ve sat down. Jake buries his nose into the menu, hoping that he looks occupied enough with choosing an entrée to excuse the heavy silence that has settled over the table. A few feet away, in the other side of the booth, Amy does the same thing.

A young man in a pressed suit and tie approaches their table, a small, nervous smile on his face. “Are you all ready to order?”

“Yes!” Amy nearly leaps at the chance to talk to someone who is not Jake. Jake tries not to feel too hurt by the desperate excitement in her voice. “I’ll take the chicken piccata, please.”

Jake lingers around the chicken parmesan but ends up going with a steak, because he’s determined to show Amy and maybe himself that he can eat like an adult. They pass their silk-embossed menus to the waiter, sip their waters, and suddenly it’s too quiet again.

Of all the feelings the human body is able to experience, the first one greeting Jake when he comes to is pain. If he had a choice, he would choose something happier, more exciting and, well, less painful.

It rises on the back of his head, almost at the top, like the source of a river somewhere high in the mountains. High in the mountains – that’s what he feels like.

It then wraps around his skull, pulsating behind his forehead, and trickles down into his neck. Sleeping on the floor of his first apartment for two weeks because he had yet to buy a decent bed or mattress was nothing against this, at least that’s what his tense muscles are screaming at him right now.

Squeezing his eyes shut against the pain, he turns his head and winces. His whole body feels sore. He wonders if last night ended in a few rounds too many but comes up short. What did he do last night? The mere attempt at remembering sends a sharp pain through his skull.

Jake crossed the street towards the coffee shop, a piece of paper in his hands, looking glum. Gina watched him from behind the counter, polishing mugs in preparation for the shop opening in forty minutes.

Jake was late, as usual. They were both supposed to be there an hour before opening time. But as he pushed the door open, sending the bell dinging, he looked too sad to reprimand. “Hey, G.”

“Hey, Jake.” Gina warily put the mug down. “What’s up?”

“Nothing.” Jake looked around the shop helplessly, his gaze blank. “Um, what do you need me to do?”

Gina decided not to push him. Jake always talked eventually. “You can turn everything on.”

Jake lumbered around the shop, preheating the ovens for the frozen pastries they made each morning, turning on the coffee machines and the milk frother, setting up the AC.

Forty-five minutes later, Gina and Jake shared their mandatory start-of-work cinnamon bun. Stuffing the last sticky bite into his mouth, Jake seemed somewhat cheered up.

“So…” Gina picked at her half of the pastry, savoring it. “Are you going to tell me what that is?” She pointed at the paper Jake had been holding, just visible over the side of his bag.

Jake took a big breath. “Yeah, I guess I should. I, uh…”

The bell dinged again, signaling the first customer’s arrival.

“Later, then. I promise.” Jake put on his cheerful customer face and manned the register.

At the end of every shift they had together, Jake and Gina tossed a coin to decide who would do the good part of cleanup and who got the bad parts. Mopping the floors and wiping the table was of course on the good list, since you could pretend the mop was a microphone and dance around. Cleaning the ovens and coffee machines was bad, since you had to crouch and sometimes your clothes got dirty.

Today, Gina was slightly happy that she got the bad chores. Two minutes sliding around on the wet floors and Jake’s mood would be improved. By the time he got to the tables, he would talk.

“G.” She was right. Jake cleared his throat before continuing. “I have some news. I, uh, I passed the last of the tests. I graduate from the police academy next week.”

Gina straightened up so fast that she banged her head against the oven’s ceiling, but she was so excited she could hardly feel it. “That’s amazing! Jake! Why have you been moping around all day?”

Jake had his back to her, so she couldn’t see his face, but she could hear his voice breaking. “It’s just… It’s the first thing we’re not doing together since… since gym classes were separated into boys and girls in middle school. Remember how devastated we were? And this is so much bigger.” He sniffled. “G, we’ve done everything together. Elementary school, middle school, high school, now this job. I went through the police academy alone, but I still saw you here all the time. What am I supposed to do without you?” He finally turned to look at her, eyes wet.

Gina dropped everything she was holding and ran to hug Jake, banging her ribs against the counter in her urgency. “Jakey, who knew you were so sweet and sentimental?”

“Ew. No. No, Gina, get off of me. You’re covered in oven gunk! Gina!” Jake leaped back and crashed into a table. Rubbing his lower back, he glowered at Gina, but he couldn’t stay mad at her for long.

Gina took a step back and adopted a rare serious expression. “You’ll be fine. You’re one of the smartest, bravest, best people I know.” Her gaze turned mischievous. “And I know a lot of people. Because actually the first thing we didn’t do together was me being popular in high school, and you weren’t. And you got through that.”

“Hey! Not nice.” Jake punched her shoulder half-heartedly, but he was clearly touched. “Thanks, Gina. But it’s still going to be sad leaving you.”

“I got an idea.”

“Why do you have an extra evil spark of joy in your eyes?”

“We are going to pull the best, grandest, most fuck-with-their-minds pranks you have ever seen before you leave.”

Jake’s eyes lit up with a similar passion. “Let’s brainstorm most prank-able coworkers.”

A Moment In Time, Again and Again

Hello @xoxobuckybarnes, It is I, your Summer Fic Exchange writer for @b99fandomevents. Thank you for all your amazing prompts, but I ended up choosing “The Squad after ten years”. I really hope you enjoy it.

Also a few points:

1) The whole story is non-linear. It’s like a series of snapshots. It’s related, but chronologically the don’t really make sense

2) It is smut adjacent? Implied smut? Idk, It’s just a few lines because honestly, it’s my first time writing anything like that

3) There might be some spelling errors and grammatical error, sorry if they put a damper on your experience

4) Thank you @b99fandomevents for giving this chance

5) MOST IMPORTANTLY: I hope you enjoy it.

There were many reasons Amy thought that might bring the squad together- well, mainly one- Scully dying (the man was already decaying when she was in the precinct), but this was not it. In fact, this was the opposite of it.

She reads the sign again, still wondering if she dreamt it up. But nope. Norm Scully and Cindy Shatz were indeed getting married.

Amy walks into her old turf: Shaw’s Bar. She feels like she stepped into another universe, everything is different, but somehow, the same. It’s the place she came to right after her wedding. The stools are different and the bar more worn, but the place still feels warm like her wedding night. The back door leads right to the alley where she once tried to conceive (that was a low point) and judging by the fact the Hitchcock is standing right outside the bathroom with Scully nowhere in sight, she guesses even the bathroom smells (stinks) the same.

Her eyes sweep over the room, she can see Rosa and Gina huddles together and she already feels bad for their victim, Holt and Kevin are talking to Terry- it never stops amusing her seeing the very passionate Captain Jeffords squared against impassive Retd Captain Holt and Kevin. Charles is haranguing the caterers, when she hears a voice from behind: “Of all the gin joints in all the towns in all the world, she walks into mine.”

In which Amy, Jake and Mac attend Peanut Butter’s retirement party.

Answer to the prompt “something with lieutenant peanut butter” from @dumpsteramy for @b99fandomevents’ Summer 2021 Fic Exchange. Hope you’ll enjoy this little thing, Emily! I haven’t written anything in months so I hope I’m not too rusty… especially since I changed ideas like 10 times before settling on this one. I would have missed not taking part in the challenge though, so thank you @amydancepants-peralta and @amyscascadingtabs for organizing it, as always it’s a lot of fun :D And a huge thanks to MediumSizedEvil on Discord for your ideas that inspired me to write this!

Amy’s been to quite a few retirement parties throughout her career, including her dad’s when she was still a student at the Academy and, more recently, her long-time colleagues’ Hitchcock and Scully who, to no one’s surprise, retired on the same day and had a joint party.

(Last she heard of them, they were having the time of their life on a culinary trip in France.)

No matter how long she’s been on the force and how many of these parties she’s been to, though, Amy has to admit she never attended a horse’s retirement party — at least until now.

Indeed, at age 18, it’s time for Peanut Butter — who’s known as Captain Peanut Butter now — to go enjoy the rest of his years in some green pasture with his peers or whatever horses do once they retire from the job. Despite its singularity, Amy has to admit the party is quite a success so far and that she’s having fun. She probably should hate the horse and his ever-growing popularity that took another turn when he (technically) became the youngest captain of the NYPD (her own dream!) at only 16 years old, but she can’t bring herself to.

After all, he’s the reason why she didn’t have to give birth alone at the precinct a few years ago, without Jake to hold her hand through the last push and hear Mac’s very first cries as he entered this world. For that, she’ll always remain grateful to him. Plus, she quickly rationalized back when she learned the news about his promotion, 16 horse years roughly meant 50 human ones.

Which is barely an accomplishment and definitely not ‘youngest captain in the NYPD’ material.

She still has time to beat that record.

@ebdaydreamer here’s the second fic! It’s loosely based on a real experience I had at universal and is kind of silly 😜 @b99fandomevents

“Jake, are you sure this is a good idea? This ride looks kind of intense…”, Amy says in a worried tone as they shuffle through Hogwarts Castle, the rest of the squad trailing behind them.

“Yeah, I know how you get on rollercoasters. Annual Disneyworld trip, remember? You screamed on Splash Mountain dude…” Rosa yells from behind, apparently listening in on their conversation.

“Not helping, Rosa – it’ll be fine”, Jake then responds, turning back to Amy “– it’s Harry Potter, you know I love Harry Potter… and how scary could a Harry Potter ride really be–“

Jake’s questioning is cut off by the sight of the ride seats flying up, putting the riders on their backs.

“It’s fine. It’s fine. It’s fine…”

“Still sure about this ride?” Amy says in a teasing tone.

“Pfft yeah” is Jake’s confident response.

That response quickly fades when they’re picked up by a twisting turning arm and are thrown in the air, in the same manner as the riders they’d seen in the queue.

And then when the ride stops, just as a giant dementor is flashing up in their face. Jake, who’s only just started to calm down from literally everything else about the ride, begins to panic again.

“Have we broken down? Why have we stopped?”, he says nervously to Amy.

“It probably won’t get worse than this” Amy says, in a tone that Jake recognises as “trying to calm him down but with a nervous tinge creeping in”.

Ironically, immediately after that it does get much worse. The arm starts moving up and down rapidly in a way that’s clearly not supposed to happen. Jake’s yells increase with every jerking movement.

“Ames you cursed us! We’re all gonna die oh my g– oh no wait now it’s fine… no it’s not!” is his monologue as the ride keeps moving in the same direction, before fixing itself and going right into what it’s supposed to. Which unfortunately for the arachnophobic Jake is a giant Aragog.

“Your childish screaming did take away from the ride experience somewhat Peralta” is Holt’s review on the way out back into the main part of Universal.

“Not that there was much to add, the whole thing was ridiculous. What were we even doing to assist the wizards? Why did they thank us at the end? We did nothing to assist them…”

“Anybody want to get a Butterbeer?”, Terry then suggests, breaking the silence as everyone ponders Holt’s analysis.

“No thanks, I’m good…” Jake mumbles, still feeling a bit uneasy. “I think I’m gonna go hang out with some Minions for a while…”

Summary: Everything in Amy’s life is going great: new house, new baby on the way and a promotion that takes her one step closer to her dream of Captain. She’s happy - of course, she is - her life is going exactly how she planned. Except there’s just one small catch…

“C’mon, Ames, this one is it, I can feel it!” Jake insisted, gently pulling his wife along.

Amy couldn’t help but giggle at his enthusiasm. “Babe, you’ve said that about the last three houses.”

“And? Were they really so bad?” Jake asked, “Or did they just not meet up to your impossible standards?”

“The first one was in a sketchy neighbourhood, the second one had a weird smell and the third one was a health hazard!” she insisted.

Jake rolled his eyes, “Squeaky stairs and a couple of broken cabinets are not health hazards, babe.”

Amy bit her lip as they reached the door of the fourth house, “It’s just… with another one on the way, and Mac still being so young I don’t want to have to spend months working on a house.”

Before Jake could reassure her, the estate agent opened the door. “Hi, you must be Jake and Amy. I’m Linda, c’mon in.”

“Jake, this is… amazing.”

This seems to be all Amy can come up with as the hotel room presents itself before her. Better or bigger words seem to be lacking from her otherwise excellent vocabulary but she blames it on the fact that she’s been carrying a tiny human for the past 35 weeks - not that she’s complaining. It’s been hard, both physically and mentally, and there are a few more weeks to go but by the end of it all, she’ll be holding her little baby boy.

She’s tired and every inch of her body swollen and/or sore, but more importantly she’s eager and excited. Jake is too, if not even more than her, and this has resulted in the current scene: their babymoon.

Hey @ebdaydreamer, here’s the first of two fics for the @b99fandomevents fic exchange – hope you like it!!

“Jake, you can’t have this much stuff to pack…” Amy says in a slightly raised voice, walking towards his bedroom with an exasperated sigh, like a teacher walking into a rowdy classroom. The sight that meets her when she gets in makes her want to cry, vomit, scream and throw herself out of a window and off a cliff all at the same time.

Jake’s stuff, which he should’ve been packing to move into her apartment over the next few days, is absolutely everywhere. The bed is barley visible for clothes, there are more randomly assorted sneakers around than she even knew he had, even his giant signed Die Hard poster is somehow round the wrong way.

“I can’t decide what to keep, Ames! I have too much stuff and I can’t take it all…” he says, with the energy of a toddler who’s just about ready to flop onto the floor in defeat. In line with that, he also throws two unmatched sneakers down, which hit the ground with a dramatic “thud”.

Most girlfriends would be irritated at such laziness, but honestly, as much as she hates the mess, the idea of cleaning it makes Amy want to jump for joy. She’s been waiting for this moment ever since she first entered Jake’s filthy apartment. Honestly, if she didn’t love him so much she’d be out of the door at the sight of the mess he leaves. She’s even told him that several times and she thinks it’s a testament to how much he loves her that she wasn’t even offended.

“We could make out instead?”, Jake suggests, flopping down on the bed before yelping up in surprise as he hits his head on another sneaker. Seriously, how does he own so many?

“Do you really think I want to hop onto that bed? You’re already getting injured from it”, Amy responds with a laugh and a raised eyebrow as she ruffles his hair. It’s a habit she started a few months into knowing him, when their rivalry was just starting to go from actual irritation into a foundation of genuine friendship. But he only stopped pretending to be annoyed by it a few months ago.

It’s then that she notices it – the slight shine of a Polaroid.

“Hey, I didn’t know you kept these”, she says as she pulls them out, seeing younger versions of the squad staring back at her. Her memories are slightly blurred, but as she looks back at all the photos Jake has kept, she starts to remember.

It had been her first night out since joining the squad – the first time she’d taken down her carefully guarded walls, slightly letting go of her need to appear professional to her new colleagues.

She doesn’t even notice Jake coming up behind her, until he rests his head on her shoulder. The fond expression on her face is mirrored in his and they both sit silently.

Looking over all of the photos, Amy can’t help but wonder what snapshots of their future will be framed and put on the walls of her apartment, or any other home they’ll share.

“We’ve come a long way since then, huh?”, Jake says, kissing her shoulder.

“Yeah… now we just need to get it all over to my place”, she says firmly, earning another groan from Jake.

Someday they’ll return to this same position, to pack all of the stuff and move it again.

By that point, they’ll have the assistance of chubby toddler hands, putting everything in in the most random and bizarre order, much to Amy’s horror. Instead of going from a tiny, disgusting apartment to a bigger, nicer one, they’ll be moving into their first house.

But for now, they begin to take Jake’s stuff out of Jake’s chipped front door, with its peeling paint, towards Amy’s place. Taking the first steps into that future together.

“Actually, I want to add one more rule.” “Yeah?” Jake leans back in his chair, crossing his arms behind his head and flexing his biceps through the green shirt with a smug grin. “You’re not allowed to fall in love with me.” “Won’t be a problem.”

Amy Santiago doesn’t date cops. Jake Peralta’s sworn never to date a lawyer again. When a couple of drinks and the returning of a borrowed shirt ends with the two of them in bed together, Amy decides to take control of the situation the best way she knows how: a comprehensive set of rules. There’s just one little thing she hadn’t anticipated – Jake Peralta is full of surprises.
