Interim Show (As Curator): Unveiled Truths Documentation
Interim Show (As Curator): A Record & Timeline
E29/11/17:
After going to people’s studio spaces and receiving their presentations about their current work, we regrouped and decided which of each artist’s work we would like them to present or develop for the show. We then decided on the title “Unveiled Truths” for the exhibition as a way of linking the diverse themes together. We decided that some of us would be better suited to curating certain artist’s work, so we split off into groups to contact the artists and track their progress.
30/11/17:
Sophie created a facebook page and sent all of the exhibitors this opening message:
6/12/17: We started recieving submissions at this point, and due to how early we asked for them, they were just rough drawings and dimensions. We thought this was important to have an early submission before the official proposal so that we new as early as possible what we may need to book out and we could start thinking about where people may need to be placed in the space. These are our artists’ submissions:

& Proposal form requests sent out to everyone:
Hey, We need you to fill in a Project Proposal Form however, if there are any major changes to your work from what you have already submitted we will need to know by Friday morning. This is so we can work out exactly what everyone is doing and work on the marketing for your exhibition. We will also use to information for your plaques. We need this by 2nd January 2018 by 5pm. When filled in please send this to [email protected]. You can find this linked. On the 9th January meet us at Project Space 4 for a meeting at 10am. After this we would like your permission to film you speaking about your work for a documentary. This will be an exposure opportunity. It will only take about 5 minutes of your time and on the day, we will need you to sign a permission form so we can publish this documentary. You can say no to this if you do not feel comfortable. Then, on the 11th January, we will need you to come to PS4, at 9:30am no later and drop your work off so it can be photographed and set up. Thank you so much, Sophie Banks Brandon Chaskin

Exhibition Synopsis to go in the leaflet was written and approved by every member of the curation team:
2/1/18:
Started receiving proposal forms from people and we began chasing down the remaining few. Emilia was given the task of making the labels to go on the walls in the exhibition, so she used the names and titles on the proposal forms to begin working on them.

Interim Show (As exhibitor): Photographic Documentation
I found that the easiest way to document the interim show was probably digitially, however I will print off some of the best photographs to go into my studio space. A reflection on my final piece can be found in my Reflective Journal NOTEBOOK.
Here is my final piece in the PS5 Installation:
My work in the publication:
Erwin Wurm: One Minute Sculptures
http://www.tate.org.uk/art/artworks/wurm-one-minute-sculptures-p82017
One thing that I think is severely lacking in my collection of research is general artist research. I have, for the sake of what I have been focusing on in this unit, chosen to research photographers as they influence my work most. I do, however, take influence from artists who specialise in various mediums and disciplines.
I came across Erwin Wurm’s One Minute sculptures in my 2nd year of studying Photography at college and I have been eager to revisit his work and allow it to influence my work now that I have progressed.
I have become increasingly interested in the notion that the photograph of an object is both a seperation of the original object and it is an object within itself, and I began to explore this in the beginning of this unit. I would like to continue working with this idea in a different context, this time turning my attention to self portraiture and the boundaries of the self portrait.
One could suggest that the act posing for a self portrait could be a performance. Once the self portrait has been taken, the image is a representation of oneself, however, a seperation of oneself.
A key part of Erwin Wurm’s one minute sculptures are the people that compose them. They use various props but the focus tends to be the body and I find it interesting that the body can be described as a “sculpture” in this context. I suppose, at this point, I am interested in producing a series of self portraits of myself interacting with spaces in a similar way to the people in Erwin Wurm’s work. There is also the idea that the “sculptures” in Erwin Wurm’s work are transient and are only documented through photographs. However, they existed and continue to exist through photographs. My interest in Erwin Wurm’s work may stem from the use of photography as documentation, and I can use photography as a tool for documenting other elements of my artistic practice, rather than describing my practice solely as photography. I think this particular series poses questions, for me, about the role of photography in other areas of fine art and how I may explore other areas of fine art in a similar way.
Image transfer process for “Figured Fabric” Exhibition

For the exhibition, I have 3 pieces of fabric that I can use however I wish. I want to create 3 pieces using the image transfer technique of gods/religious idols, using mixed media to work internet meme-related text into them.
Powerpoint: Photobook mock up
my photobook mock up
I made a physical copy and a powerpoint mock up, as I thought it would be the easiest way to order up the images and events by date. The photo album layout is quite different to this, but it was useful to have this guide to follow when putting the final book together.

Article Title: Chad Moore’s dreamy photos capture a summer well spent
(Text by: Ashleigh Kane, 21 November 2017)
link: http://www.dazeddigital.com/art-photography/article/38121/1/chad-moores-dreamy-photos-capture-a-summer-well-spent
select quotes that are relevant:
“The photographer’s latest exhibition plays on the idea of extending a beautiful moment forever”
Moore is discussing his dreamy portraiture, in particular, his latest show in Paris, Too Late, So Soon. It’s a title which he says “isn’t actually very conceptual at all”, explaining that it actually refers to a notes folder on his computer that he has been adding to for seven years.
“When you’re with friends or a lover and really enjoying yourself, you lose track of time – something that we often don’t get to do anymore given we are so connected to our phones, computers, etc. When you lose track, it’s also really easy for the time to pass too quickly – that day or night is over… how’d it get too late, so soon?”
All the work was made over the summer, meaning the exhibition is filled with beautiful colours, and bodies embracing each other amongst mother nature. The press release adds that it’s about “extending a moment forever and giving viewers a chance to save memories, and a chance to make them”. His favourite photos from the show are “Tereza (Blue Moon)” and “Tereza (Floating)”. “These are both really important to the show,” he reveals. “I spent the end of the summer in Stockholm. Every morning early Tereza and I would go swimming at this place Langholmen, even though it was freezing. It was a really fascinating because while there are boats and things passing by, the water is incredibly clean. This became our morning ritual and that’s where the floating image comes from. That tradition was continued to an extent a few weeks later in Barcelona, although this time the ritual would be done late at night.”
“I think people can look at the work and take something away from each picture – photography is such a fast-paced thing now, and the way we look at images has completely changed. But that’s what I find interesting about working on a gallery wall... if you can take a deep breath and look at an image for more than three seconds, I think you can be touched by it, and remember a time or instance where you felt this same way.”
Too Late, So Soon runs until 6 January 2018 at Galerie du Jour Agnès b in Paris”
This is another photo series that I think I can take a lot of inspiration from now. I often look to more dated photography series’ when I am gathering research and inspiration. I always look to the masters of photography but I think it’s equally as, if not more important to know about the contemporary photographers that are working now. This is a beautiful exhibition full of images that aim to represent youth and a feeling of euphoria.

hate crimes against LGBT+ individuals: UK & USA
I have just begun my research into significant dates for LGBT+ people and I started off by trying to get a list of any LGBT+ people who were killed in a hate crime.
I was redirected to Wikipedia after a google search, where I found 2 lists compiled for hate crimes in the USA and in the UK.
There were a lot:
But, I picked out a few that I found particularly shocking (mainly from the USA list):
- 24th June 1973: An arsonist burned the upstairs Lounge, a gay bar in New Orleans, killing 32 people.
- 21st June 1977: Robert Hillsborough was stabbed to death by a man shouting “faggot” in San Francisco.
- 7th September 1979: Robert Allen Taylor was stabbed to death near Loring Park in Minneapolis. A local reporter interviewed the murderer and he was told “I don’t like gays, okay?”
- 1984 (exact date unknown): Charlie Howard was drowned in Bangor, Maine for being “Flamboyantly gay.”
- 13th May 1988: Rebecca Wight and Claudia Brenner were shot by Stephen Roy Carr while hiking along the Appalachian Trail. Carr claimed that he became enraged when he saw them having homosexual relations.
On the Wikipedia page directed at history of violence in the UK, I found some other information on other injustices that occurred:
- 1952 (exact dates unknown): Alan Turing, a noted scientist, mathematician and war-time codebreaker was convicted of “gross indecency” due to his sexual orientation. He was given the choice of imprisonment or hormone treatment to reduce libido. He accepted chemical castration via oestrogen injections. *note to self: do more research*
- 31st of July 1950: Kenneth Crowe, was found dead wearing his wife’s clothes and wig. He was approached by a minor, who upon discovering he was a man, beat and strangled him to death. John Cooney (his murderer) was found not guilty.
I found these facts really upsetting to read, considering this was less than 100 years ago and this behaviour, although less common, still exists. Transgender people inparticular are STILL subjected to transphobia and hate crimes in 1st world countries and it often goes unreported and unnoticed.
I think this is quite important and I may consider a way to highlight that these injustices still present themselves in various ways, even in the 21st century. I find it quite interesting how my purely experimental project has led me to look at such challenging issues.
INTERIM SHOW: STARTING POINT
Yesterday, I met with the peers on my course who will be curating my work for the Interim Show. I have been contemplating how I wanted to present my work, evidence of this can be found in my sketchbook and there are sketches in my studio space. I have been placed in the separate room that comes off of PS1. The curators (Laura, Sam and Kinga) have decided that I, along with 2 other students, would work really well as a bit of a collaborative installation. All of our work is fairly similar in the way that it can be turned into an installation of a living room installation (My photo album, a video piece on a TV monitor and possibly a video piece on a projector).
I am perfectly happy with the idea and it fits in so perfectly well with the presentation ideas I already had. I have been asked to consider subtly allowing Brandon’s work influence mine. Brandon is doing a video piece based around men wearing “women’s” clothes and vice versa. At this point, my photo album is merely exploring the notion of forgotten photographs but I could add a lot more context by subtly including KEY DATES of injustices against the LGBT community that were in the same timeframe as my found photographs (1950s - 1980s) - particularly events involving transgender individuals.
I thought this was a brilliant idea, particularly as I am a queer individual and have often researched around the subject area of gender equality and sexuality! I’m also going to see if I can make any extra pieces to put into the exhibition to tie it all together (i.e. a list of names of LGBT individuals involved in hate crimes) maybe in the form of something that may have been found in a traditional home. A telephone book, maybe? However, I don’t want to get too ambitious!
I am feeling REALLY excited about this and it is brilliant that I’ve received such useful feedback and ideas as a result of this group critique.

This particular text was also found on Google Scholar when I researched “Autobiographical Photography”.
I believe that maybe the starting point for my essay can be found within these texts. My own artistic practice is hugely based around autobiographical photography and I think it is a practice which is fairly underrated, especially in the present day where we are saturated with imagery and information. I could possibly write an essay about the significance of autobiographical documentary photography in the present day. This may give me quite a lot of freedom to write, as I could either defend the practice or question its relevance in a world full of autobiographical images and visual diaries on social media. This could also be linked back to the importance of the family album and the documentation of relationships in general.
Although I have pondered writing about Social Documentary, I believe there is another question begging to be answered that somehow links in to my own creative practice more effectively. I am, however, failing to pin point it. I may need to speak to speak to a tutor.
