Deconstructing Masculinity & Manhood with Michael Kimmel @ Dartmouth College
Oooh, I am very familiar (and fond of) Kimmel’s work
I’m having flashbacks to undergrad (I have a degree in Gender Studies)
uhm.. WOW. Yes. This is so much of the daily life of our department, at all levels - community, institutional, classroom, etc. Lots to think about here.
(Obvs. substitute "audism" for "racism", or just plain "oppression")
We were just discussing how so few people seem to know the signs for sexual/gender identities. Thankfully there’s some lovely people on the internet here to help!
Nice little resource for signs you may not come across in the classroom.
*Remember - always check with Deaf people who live in your local area for what signs are in use locally. Sometimes one sign that is accepted as neutral or positive in one area will be seen as negative or derogatory in another community. Ultimately, watch the person's facial expression to see the emotion behind the sign.
In the Vancouver area, I would use the first sign he shows for "Queer" with caution unless you identify as a member of the LGBTQ community. Like he says, it is viewed as a slur by some and as a reclaimed term by others.
BCRAD members would be a good resource in this area!
Did you go to a mainstream school? I did. This type of education is called ‘inclusive education’, and it is anything but. Here are 10 things I really learnt, when I went to mainstream secondary sch...
The Holcomb Family: 5 Generations in Deaf Education: a video by Leala Holcomb.
I created a personal historical documentary on my 5-generation Deaf family’s experiences in Deaf education for the Early Hearing Detection and Intervention conference in 2013. I learned from my parents and grandparents that American Sign Language-English bilingualism is not an old approach to educating Deaf children. Why? Sign language was banned from ALL classrooms until 1970s. In contrast, the listening and spoken language approach has always been enforced in Deaf schools, including the signing schools, for at least over a hundred years. Signing schools only meant Deaf kids were able to sign during recess and dorm. Very fascinating and debunks the narrative that sign language is “old” and spoken language is “new” while the opposite is true. Seeing my nephews receive an optimal education in languages that are fully accessible to them without any frustrations and struggles gives me hope that we are going in the right direction. Disclaimer: I acknowledge that including educational degrees in our introduction violates Deaf culture norms but due to the classist and elitist nature of the EHDI conference, I wanted to make a point that sign language was not detrimental to our ability to succeed in the academia. I also want to point out that our white privilege has given us and continue to give us opportunities that many other People of Color Deaf people did not have and still do not have in the schooling system.
Link to the blog of Allison Polk - We talked about her blog in Deaf Lit, Class B. She wrote "Dandelion" in the prose text.
You can see a real interpreter at the same time as the fake one in this video. I still can't believe this guy just went ahead and made up completely fake gestures in front of the whole world. Apparently, this is not the first time he has done this at an important political event. A South African Deaf organization had already sent a formal complaint the last time this happened!!!
Deaf Muslims sign “Asalam Alaykium” in British Sign Language.
Identity is not a bunch of little cubbyholes stuffed respectively with intellect, race, sex, class, vocation, gender. Identity flows between, over, aspects of a person. Identity is a river – a process.

Have you ever knocked something over while telling a story? How about elbowing someone in the face while giving directions? #ASLproblems [Picture Description: Yellow background. Cartoonish drawing of a man raising his arms high above his head, hands making a 3 and 2 respectively. Black Text: “My signing space is so large that my monthly budget includes a column for property damages.”]
I've knocked my glasses off my face countless times...that gets expensive!
"Pride" and "power" movements are about reconstructing, as legitimate cultures, identities which have been historically denigrated or marginalized. Gay, Latino, black (etc.) pride movements reclaim a particular identity from a mainstream culture which has established that identity as something...
