Why does no one talk about how the moment that Heathcliff gave up on his revenge was when he actually got a look at Hareton and Catherine by the fireplace in that peaceful scene, which is described in a lot of detail on how pleasant and serene it was, and then he specifically say that he didn't see Catherine in Hareton but himself. The fact that he saw Hareton getting what he had always wanted, what he never got a chance to have, to be with Catherine and be accepted and be happy by the hearth. That was what ended his decades long resolution, it singlehandedly made him give up on it. He didn't end it for Catherine but for himself, at the end he couldn't bring himself to do exactly what had been done to him, what had started him on that path in the first place. As cruel as he had become.

wuthering heights 2026 marketing heathcliff and cathy as tense, perverse, forbidden love is blowing the fuck out of me. those two are partners in crime above all else. they are not out here stowing away to fuck on the moors, they would have no use for a big fuckoff love confession, heathcliff need not even express in words his jealously of edgar. their union is a fundamental truth to them! that is what makes them an appealing and tragic couple. heathcliff certainly is not providing cathy with self-actualizing truths about her sexuality. he couldn’t and wouldn’t tell her anything about herself she doesn’t already know! and definitely not in terms of sexuality. this is not why they want each other. heathcliff is not this domineering, unknown sexual desire of cathy’s; he’s just her.

fennell has (potentially) interesting thoughts about the perverse and the gothic, but they are thoughts that would probably be better explored in different works.

I do love how both Cathy and Heathcliff are deeply aware of their respective Romantic Archetypes that everyone keeps trying to shove them into and both get rightfully pissed off about the boxes they are being shoved into and use those boxes as tools of manipulation to clobber other people with. Cathy talking to Edgar like "manic pixie dream girl means MANIC pixie dream girl, I'm gonna be ~~improper~~ about Heathcliff, fucking get over it." And Heathcliff's whole "relationship" with Isabella being leaning into the brooding "exotic rich brooding dark hero who can be civilized fixed by the power of feminine white womanhood true love" and then him being like jesus fucking christ you actually fell for that??? like, I didn't even lie to you, you just fully filled in the narrative of your pure love redeeming me with barely any prompting, are you for real?????? It's so fun how they play with the tropes imposed on them on purpose, in ways that betray how hopelessly trapped and paralyzed they feel by those narratives. Heathcliff says fuck you you don't get any story of me being a secret prince or a war hero or a rags to riches businessman or even evil highway robber for that matter. Cathy says fuck you you don't get any closure about of me growing as a person and being less selfish, or any clarity on the distinctions between selfishness/"ill temper" and physical illness and mental illness. I was always faking it when I was sick I was never faking it when I was sick but whatever story you tell you can't wrangle me as a saintly dead mother. I'm a gothic villain who will not be softened into a tale of family reconciliation. I'm a ghost story all godly folk disapprove of. I'm at peace in heaven, and I'm burning in hell unrepentant, and I walk the moors hand in hand with you. We are buried together. You're my one true love. Nothing could keep us apart. I never would have married you. Edgar also is there.

“Wuthering Heights is racist. Heathcliff is a stereotype and a villain. Why would you feel sad that he is being whitewashed?”

This is a common sentiment on the “wuthering heights” tag nowadays so I am posting my opposition to it as a separate post too.

1- The families Heathcliff ruins were already pretty bad before he ruined them. This is an “abused becomes abuser” story rather than an “a demon ruins white families” story. The white people in the story are not really better than Heathcliff.

2- Wuthering Heights is primarily remembered as a love story by the general public and it is certainly the angle this new adaptation is going for. Interestingly, the 19th century critics who tended to focus on the revenge plot more were more ready to accept Heathcliff’s racial otherness. Heathcliff started to be whitewashed when Wuthering Heights started to be read as a love story and he became a literary sex icon.

Whitewashing Heathcliff (both in adaptations and in literary criticism) has never been and will never be about people being concerned with him being “too evil”, it had always been about people feeling squeamish about a dark-skinned Other being thoroughly romantically/sexually preferred by the white women in the story. And it is the case with this new adaptation too. Hence his originally blond romantic rival being played by a Pakistani actor in this new adaptation.

3- Heathcliff is a cool, calculating, smart villain. He is violent too but not any more than his white foster brother Hindley. Fictional villains, especially those in heightened and slightly unrealistic stories like Wuthering Heights, can be charismatic and cool and memorable. And there is nothing inherently racist about a villain not being white.

4- Catherine is also a terrible person. This story is not one about a demon lover corrupting an innocent girl. The whole point of the story is that Heathcliff and Catherine are similar people.

setup chapters of wuthering heights greatest foot in mouth simulator of all time. you decide to go meet your new neighbor so you trek all the way down to his house (you live on the moors) and he's the world's meanest guy who hates small talk and explains nothing so in order to make conversation you have to just guess, and you guess wrong every. single. time so he grows increasingly enraged with you but, again, refuses to volunteer information until you first innocently say something extremely incorrect that triggers all of his insecurities and pushes all of his buttons. there's a mean girl there too and they spend the whole visit fighting with each other and you got their relationship wrong about three times and you're still not sure if they actually explained it. and now the weather is too bad to walk home (on the moors) so you have to stay the night (you have to sort of guilt them into it and they're not even guilty, really, they just want you out of their hair) so they put you in the guest bedroom which is also the dead situationship bedroom. was it the only available bedroom? no somebody did it to antagonize your neighbor, possibly, so he comes in while you're sleeping (badly, you found the dead situationship diary and were up half the night reading and somehow you have even less context than before) and kicks you out before you even know what you did wrong, again, and you have to walk allllll the way home (on the moors) and then when you get back you have the most horrible raging cold for days. your housekeeper makes you soup and because she's bored she tells you your neighbor's entire life story . STILL not enough context for all that shit at his house
