Starsky is bitching, Hutch is cooking, no one gets sacrificed (cult free)
Aight, I’ve been self-medicating watching Starsky & Hutch lately and I have thoughts. I used to watch S&H a lot back in highschool and college, it’s a pretty foundational piece of media for me, but I don’t think I’d ever analyzed it?? I always knew these were well written characters, but there is so much to unpack. In buddy media, there are roles you can put the two into. The sunshine one and the grumpy one, the intellectual one and the emotional one, the big one and the small one, etc etc. But S&H just…..side steps all that? You can apply a surface ~veneer~ of those things to Starsky and Hutch, but they are so much more than that, and they trade roles, but not due to inconsistent writing, but due to predictable complexities of personality.
Take their tempers. They’ve each got one, but they express so differently. Starsky is much more prone to wearing his heart on his sleeve – he gets impatient, angry, or upset much quicker than Hutch does, but because of that he’s also much more used to getting a handle on himself. Starsky gets riled, pops off, and then reigns himself in. Or Hutch reigns him in, and Starsky ultimately lets him, because he knows he needs reigning sometimes. His own volatile nature means he has much more practice at controlling that volatility. To a point. Now look at Hutch, Mr. Calm and In Control, but the epitome of still waters running deep. That Hutchinson temper may not flare as often, but when it does, it’s worse. And he is so, so much harder to talk off a cliff than Starsky is. Because he’s the calm one, he’s the collected one, and he knows it and fancies himself being the rock to Starsky’s storm, so when he does go off he will refuse to admit he lost control. He will insist his emotional outbursts are warranted, deserved, he will dig and dig and dig before he admits he was wrong. Starsky is way more likely to lose control temporarily but Hutch is 10x more likely to die on a hill.
And just, I love that?? That’s such an infuriatingly human hypocrisy, it’s so understandable. Neither of them are The Angry One, they’re both good men trying to do good in this world, but they each have limits and blindspots and triggers, they can both crack, but in such different places and with such different expressions.
I had just been hopscotching around hitting some old favorite episodes, but now I have half a mind to do a dedicated rewatch with like, a critical lens on. Give this show the level of analysis I’ve given so many other, much less important things. I know plenty of it will piss me off, the show is over 45 years old for Pete’s sake, but I feel like I’ve just been handed the opportunity to watch something I’ve seen countless hours of with the ability to pretend it’s the first time. And, I might do it?? I really don’t have that kind of time right now, but WHO KNOWS. I am having Thoughts, Opinions, and Feelings about Starsky and Hutch in this Chili’s tonight and I need an outlet dammit.
You hate yourself so loudly. You hate yourself at the top of your lungs. Your loathing for yourself permeates your speech. “Sorry I’m just rambling.” “Don’t worry about it.” “Just ignore me.” “Sorry if I’m annoying you.” “Sorry I don’t make sense.” “Sorry about that.” Sorry, sorry, sorry. You act as if you have to beat everyone else to the punch. As if the punching bag is you. If you hate yourself first, if you hate yourself loudest, then nobody will hurt you. You clapped your hands over your ears and shut your eyes and balled yourself up so that you’d never have to experience people’s loathing for you. And it meant you never heard their love. You drowned it out. You screamed your hatred over it. And you never got to hear it.

I discovered this show only recently but damn I love it so much.

The jokes
The little teasing
The hurt/comfort of this show is insane. Finally some proper caring moments!
The recovery or reaction part isn't skipped over most of the time.
Their partnerships is portrayed in such a believable touching way you realize after a few scenes how close these two are to each other
The touching. Like totally platonic pure and simple but intense and comforting friendly touches: frequent pats on the shoulder, forearm squeezing, around shoulder holding, hugs
The smiles
The intensity of the looks and how much they can communicate between each other. It's like they have their own language
How emotional they are. In front of each other but also in general, they are so open about their emotions - way more than you can generally see in movies or tv shows from tough to be guy pride
How they don't question how much they mean to each other. They don't doubt the other will come looking for them or stand up for them.
No apologizing for being injured or in trouble. Maybe this is mostly an anime thing, but it's so refreshing. Starsky was shot in the back. Hutch spend the episode caring for him and shouldering the weight of the danger and action. No words, explanations, apologies needed. Starsky was in trouble. Hutch is dealing with it. They have absolute trust in the other.
How balanced it is. Episodes where Starsky is in trouble and hurting are beautifully balanced with the ones where Hutch needs comfort or rescuing from him. It shows how they are both equal in abilities and their relationship to each other.
Not just the work and hurt, but also the fun they share together.
Sometimes life gets cruel and you can't do much to help your partner out with it. But sometimes it's enough when the other is just there. Like some episodes don't include the hugs and the crying - but it's still so touching cause the other is always reliably there through the good and bad.
Hutch raises his voice when Starsky is in trouble. Normally so calm and controlled, but damn you are getting burned if you pick up on Starsky and he is around.
I have learned so much about writing and portraying friendships - like healthy deep friendships and partnerships, from looking at these two. This is how you make guys close without making them creepy or romantic.
Being hurt or sad doesn't make them weak. Like the show manages to show them both hurt and in need of help and comfort, while still keeping them strong, cool and capable.
