AGAIN I ask, why is she sharing these most personal thoughts with someone she purportedly hates rather than Harmony or her inner circle? I think pre-Slayer Buffy and Cordelia could easily have been best friends or bitter love/hate mean girl frenemies, but either way, there is something about Buffy that Cordelia naturally gravitates toward. She’s not a hanger-on pawn like Harmony (sorry not meaning to shit on Harmony, she’s just the most likely comparison to draw from). I think she sees another take-no-shit queen bee in Buffy that she either needs to keep close or destroy but mostly make out with

She also knows that Buffy will understand her in a way the other popular girls won’t. Buffy is an outsider, Cordelia trusts that she can share her feelings of loneliness and isolation and be Seen and Understood by Buffy without judgement because Buffy is also alone, even if she has much deeper friendships than Cordy does in s1.
