Some facts to know about Ayato,and his true feelings :
Many people don’t really get Ayato’s bond with Cordelia or simply misinterpret it .
In their majority ,probably because their main,but unfortunately way too unreliable and OOC source is the Anime.
But the actual relationship between Ayato and Cordelia is quite different.At least from his side.
Even if Ayato (at his current age) usually shows irritation and speaks ill of his mother ,that is like that simply for him to try forget the bitter deep feelings he has towards her.
What you see in the anime,or in the games as “possessive behavior"of Ayato towards the PC (with default but changeable name Yui) ,and many people misinterpret it as “love”,it is actually Ayato’s desire to hold ,to posses,the only thing that reminds him of the woman he couldn’t really obtain i.e Cordelia.
Usually the words he speaks towards the player’s character ,wishing to be the “first ,"the only” ,to be acknowledged accepted and loved,are actually feelings and the unspoken words he had towards his mother .Seeking trough his entire life her acknowledgement and love even after her death .
Many people try present that Ayato kills Cordelia out of hatred,but you really must be too flat minded to believe in that,because if you have paid any attention to Ayato’s words and tears while he was killing her in MB,you might have got the real reasons.
But lets go back even further during his childhood which was mostly shown in the fandisc on More Blood in details.
There you will see the kid Ayato loving his mother so deeply,that he will endure her cruelty towards him,that he will try to be the best so she to finally love him.
That he will try do his dream castle just for her,so he will finally have her.
You can also hear the kid Laito’s words toward Ayato,that usually just tries to discourage him even more,telling him that she will never love anyone but Karlheinz,that no matter what Ayato does she will not notice him,nor respond to his feelings.
Laito senses pretty well Ayato’s deep affection towards Cordelia,and knows that Ayato dreams to have Cordelia only for himself.
(Laito also does that to Kanato too but that is another topic.)
However Laito is not really right,because Cordelia did notice Ayato’s efforts ,unfortunately she is not really all that interest in the children living her bohemian life and trying to “get drank” in the lust in order to forget what Karlheinz is doing to her.
In MB is pretty well shown how Karlheinz ruins Cordelia,playing with her deep love,and because of that she turns her frustration to the one closer to her,to the one that always craves her attention and love the most - little Ayato .
But eventually when he grows up ,Ayato gets overwhelmed by her not because of the beatings and bad treatment he had to endure from her.He gets overwhelmed by the despair that he will not ever be capable to obtain her .
Ayato’s reasons to kill Cordelia is same as Laito’s(Laito from the original game only though) ,and the reason is to forcefully give her the “eternal vampire love"which is the act of taking the beloved one’s life ,and also a symbolic rape in this case.Forcefully giving her that love.
Ayato is the first one to ever dare to oppose Cordelia,and when he sees her begging him to be with Karlheinz at least in her last moments,this only breaks his heart that loves her too strong .
The act of murdering her is an act to seal her for only themselves(the triplets even though mostly Ayato and Laito are the ones in action) .They do it so they will never have to share her with other man and to feel rejected by her .
However her personality and their love towards her is so overwhelming that it controls them even after her physical death (considering they originally don’t know she have survived trough her heart) .
And only because of that ,later ,Ayato shows possession towards the PC.He shows no love nor real care for the PC ,trough his entire rout and even in the best ending in the original game of Diabolik Lovers Haunted Dark Bridal .His words when he ran from the wedding with his bride towards her were possessive like owning the perfect blood bag that only safely reminds him about the woman he truly loved,but is not dangerous like her.Possessive words to hold her and never lose her/or share her/ because he couldn’t hold that way the one he actually loved.And even if a lot of the fangirls misinterpreted those words,out of inability to understand them,or wishful thinking,or poor fan translations,it doesn’t matter,however the PC herself knew she was an "object"for Ayato and that she can not "save"him,yet she was loving him,knowing he will forever love and hate another (just like Laito from the original game too) .
So those words of possession,were never words of love.The possession of the proxy of the one he couldn’t obtain.
However in his bad ending (with mixed S&M answers) there,he would go mad and overwhelmed learning about Cordelia’s heart,and fearing not to lose his only beloved ( his mother) again,he will kill her vessel,because for him he desires Cordelia that much and she overwhelms him so much that the only way to have her is sealed inside of him trough that murder.
So to conclude it,if you really pay attention in both games for Ayato,the original DL and the fandisc AU of MB,when you hear his desire to acknowledgement and possession,you must know this is not really towards the PC(Yui) his desires and words are to Cordelia,words he couldn’t tell her,the one he couldn’t obtain,and now with her plain submissive proxy he can have a "safe” replacement,but he will never love her like he loves Cordelia (and is sad how the anime ruins him making him OOC in order to like Yui) .
Because of all of this,his inability to bond with the PC ,inability to love her,when simply viewing her as a replacement object for who he truly loved to the point of hating ,Ayato got the lowest rank in the popularity poll after the first game….And considering he is the “main guy” in DL,they began to slowly arse him ,fluff him and make him OOC .
But the original Ayato and even the later Ayato in MB ,the Ayato from the anime before ep 9 (where things started to get even more random) that Ayato loves only Cordelia .
Bitter,deep,dark ,overwhelming love,that the way to consume it was trough the act of murder .
And at the end,lets not forget his nickname towards the PC/listener -it is “chichinashi"meaning "no boobs”, why do you think he uses exactly this to name her? Because he subconsciously compares her flatness to his mothers fine big breasts ,which he misses :) .
He will always compare everything to his mother,fear her,love her and hate her,and never permit her to “live"again because that way he will "lose” her again .And will seek only comfort in that scent of her blood ,and the power that this blood can give him,to become a worthy man for her (Cordelia) .
So in fact,the only reason for Ayato to want to posses the PC,is his obsession with Cordelia .And when he speaks bad about Cordelia is out of the frustration that he realizes he will only ever dream of her- Cordelia.
