My Woman, by Angel Olsen
Genre: Dream pop, Indie Rock, Psychedelic Rock
Her first release on Vox Records, Angel Olsen comes out with another stellar record with a completely fresh take on her patented time-bending style. For those not familiar with her, I’d strongly recommend that you rectify that situation, as her last LP “Burn Your Fire for No Witness” easily proved her worth as a charming sing-songwriter whilst maintaining a heart-wrenching lo-fi delivery to her coy lyrical style. However this shy and flower-petal like nature of hers did not translate into this new record, as she sheds off any sense of modesty to further progress this album’s new found boldness. As one of the lead singles on this record “Shut Up Kiss Me” would suggest, Angel has perhaps grown bored of her home-spun style and wishes to grow into something new, and does so with a beautifully composed artistic flair. Don’t let this change fool you though, some of the tracks (Intern, Sister) are still consistently emotionally hard-hitting, and Angel herself still delivers these poignant and intimate lines with a gorgeously disarming vocal delivery, one which wouldn’t be out of place on a 50′s ballad. The production on this record takes a turn from her previous work to something less lo-fi and more clean, with the reverb on the twangy guitars as well as the calmly composed drum tracks and bass lines complimenting these songs amazingly, resulting in an all-in-all well put together record, one worth your time. If you want a record that will take you for a ride, whether it be from its triumphant highs or its depressive lows, pick this up from her Bandcamp.
