NHL DRAFT 2026 | June 26, 2026
SETH JARVIS IS A STANLEY CUP CHAMPION!
I feel like people who are dismissive of sports don’t realize that they’re sometimes super condescending. like, okay, you didn’t like gym class and have personal grudges against the jocks from your high school! that doesn’t mean that other people are idiots for enjoying something that, when it’s at its best, can connect you to a broader community of fans and give you a chance to appreciate the athleticism that people are capable of when they spend years honing a specific set of skills. there’s something so valuable and human about sports that gets lost when you reduce it to “sportsball” or whatever

Interviews with hockey players are fantastic, because it is a complex game that can be spoken about at length, but during the intermission they'll find the Wettest player imaginable on the losing team and for thirty seconds they'll ask them things like "what do you need to do to get more pucks in the net?" And the player (panting, haunted behind the eyes) says something like "well, we've got to get them in there"
I could never wear any of those dumb “I hope both teams have fun” shirts because no I hope my team wins by 30 and the other team explodes on the field
being a team sports fan really is like oh what if you stanned the ship of theseus

Sidney Crosby with the QMJHL Paul-Dumont Trophy (for "Personality of the Year") and the Canada Post Cup (for most "Three Stars of the Week" appearances) in 2005 (via)
anyway with all my th*rst/joking abt th*rst tags about him i really do love and respect sidney crosby as much as i can as someone who doesn't actually know him. i cannot believe i had the pleasure of knowing of him before he got to the Show and then watching him throughout the years
i think by virtue of being canadian you get into hockey young, you get born into it, that love is heriditary in some way. passed down in too-big jerseys when you're a kid and trading cards with worn down corners. gathering in front of the tv when the home team is playing. there's gotta be some way to pass the time in the winter in a place where winter is most of the year. it can hurt you (my cousin stopped playing because of health, my dad stopped playing because of the deeply-ingrained racism), it can love you (my cousin winning a national championship, my dad being one of the first from our reserve to play on that team), but overall it is so Constant. so ubiquitous in some places you don't even have to specify what you're watching tonight.
i literally cannot recall a time i wasn't into hockey and i cannot recall a time where i wasn't into hockey and sidney crosby wasn't playing
i don't know where i'm going with this but i do know that i (along with many others, i'm sure) will be a sobbing mess whenever he retires
