“Night has fallen on Bakersfield, and the Hells Angels continue to talk and drink, inside and outside the Black Board café. i made this extraordinary shot with the existing street light from the corner lamp without a tripod. I held my breath and the Leica M S fast to the handlebars of a Harley for the long exposure. To me it looks like a film set lit by the Hollywood great James Wong Howe.”

Kit foxes make themselves at home within Bakersfield city limits: San Joaquin kit foxes are small, cute, nocturnal, opportunistic and endangered. As many as 400 of them have burrowed beneath golf courses, subdivisions and classrooms — and into the hearts of many residents.

Déjà vu out of the blue: Highway metal blasts another windshield

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KBAK/KBFX) — A motorist on Highway 99 survived a piece of metal blasting though her windshield Thursday, just a month after an eerily similar incident on the same stretch of roadway.

A McFarland woman was heading southbound on Hwy. 99 between Bakersfield and McFarland when a chunk of metal struck the upper portion of her driver's side windshield. The metal was part of a leaf spring from a big rig, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The woman, whose name was withheld, suffered a minor head injury, the CHP said.

Jan. 10, a Turlock man was rolling down the same highway through Bakersfield when a metal pipe shot through his windshield. A CHP officer said at the time that the pipe would have impaled the man, Marcus Kasprzyk, if it hadn't hit his steering wheel.
