Okay, what arse (not the person I reblogged this from, to be clear — Tumblr isn’t telling me who the original source of this repost is, and I did search) decided that, instead of just reblogging the original post, they would use a screenshot of it and post it as their own, so they could get the notes instead? Perhaps they found the screenshot somewhere other than Tumblr, but if they did, they could have seen, in that very screenshot, that 1) it’s clearly a Tumblr post, and 2) that it came from ball-so-hard-conservatory, and they could have looked that up, and lo, in the deep, dark archives of page 3, they would find the original post, which they could have reblogged. And had all the notes on the repost gone to the original, it would have over 10k notes, rather than having fewer than this repost does.
It’s reasonable to post an screenshot from Facebook or Twitter — we can’t reblog those originals directly. It’s reasonable to make a “my dash did a thing”-style post where the joke is the juxtaposition. It’s reasonable to make a compilations of Tumblr posts around a theme. In all of those cases, you’re adding something – even if only as a curator – that Tumblr wasn’t made to do, and the original posters are visible (unless hidden when anonymity is preferred).
I don’t blame the people who reblogged this — they were just using the easy reblog function, not thinking that it was stolen. It’s not their fault any more than it’s the fault of someone who reblogged stolen art unaware of its actual origin.
But it’s not reasonable to take the content of someone else’s post and repost (not reblog) it, just because you were either too lazy to spend a few seconds finding the source of an image (that provided a clear path to its source), or because you just wanted to reap the notes on “your” post.
I’m reblogging the original just above this post, so if you find it funny, you can easily reblog it. Or you can click one of the many links I put in this tirade to the original post.
Thank you!
