I uh...I have just finished The Raven Scholar, and...

Holy SHIT Ruko got absolutely railroaded by every adult in his life for his entire life. This poor kid never had a CHANCE. Like...he wasn't a flawless human when the book opens and he's all of 16 and riding the struggle bus of being deeply mediocre and a bit of a petty dickhead, but he had NO CHANCE of doing the right thing when Bersun gave him the choice about what to do with his sister.

This poor kid got backed into a corner tailor-made to force him into making a terrible choice and then ended up being groomed for the next eight years by his father's girlfriend to be the utterly perfect victim for said father. Like...Sure, Ruko pulled the trigger on his sister, but his parents loaded the gun, cocked it, helped him hold it properly, and had their fingers on the trigger too.

Goddamn this book was good...
