03 / edwin thoughts on cos.
i’m working on icons but i found edwin art where…it chronicles in pictures their beginning and their ‘real beginning’ post-canon…but far away at the end of the picture it had 03 conqueror of shamballa winry and ed and they’re either parting or holding each other and i just clench my fist.
i have lots of thoughts about 03 and why ed didn’t say goodbye at the finale of that series.
tl;dr: if you don’t ship edwin that’s completely fine and valid and as long as it isn’t some creepy ship you KNOW the ones, for ed, i’m rooting for you., but in terms of ‘canon’ it’s who he loves, the person he marries, she is the one that frankly the first time his automail gets busted in the manga he makes this face so however you see it? he loves her immensely.
a:) winry might feel a sense that she should keep waiting when she’s already established herself as a renowed automail mechanic and has a booming business long after ed left.
‘i guess you won’t let me wait anymore, right ed?’
b:) ed not saying goodbye would only prolong the pain, although the only person that makes him hesitate in sacrificing his future / closing the other world’s portal is al screaming that winry has missed him excruciatingly much just as he has her and al, in the beginning when noah finds him half-drunk asleep, he’s muttering about winry and al. while going on with her life, and that very person is winry. as short as their time was, it was clear that even in 03 ed loved winry canonly, and it will never be anyone else canon-wise.
this is the face just hearing her name makes him hesitate for a split second and we all know edward elric doesn’t hesitate very often.
c:) ed isn’t the same in 03 anymore. he’s become broken, jaded, traumatized, relies on drinking to sleep, flinches at touch. he’s died once. he killed two homunculi by himself one that had his own mother’s feelings via sloth and the original 03 greed. he’s killed them with his bare hands / alchemy and one was completely on accident. unlike in canon / brotherhood, edward kills, and even in shamballa edward, the golden-hearted childhood friend rough but excruciatingly kind, is the one telling the very person he loved romantically NOT to use a gun, USES A GUN. he’s changed. he isn’t in a sense, in his mind, an ed that really can ever come home anymore.
d:) ultimately edward wants winry to move on with her life. she’s been fine for three years, even if she has her own insane traumas of war and loss, and he’s been gone for y e a r s on his travels. unlike in canon he is far more aloof with her, and by not giving her a goodbye, as much of an asshole as that seems and i don’t excuse it –
it’s to me ed giving the push that is all he has left to give her to move on, and it’s okay not to wait anymore. because he can’t go home. and the ed that if he could go home wouldn’t ever be the same ed she knew. if possible, edward is even more broken and traumatized in 03 by far, and it shows especially in the film. in a sense, it was his way of saying he loved winry. stop waiting for me, don’t make me make you miserable, i don’t want you to wait. and now you can’t wait anymore. you need to be free of me, but i promise i won’t let myself be free of you.
