Serault lies at the ends of Orlais, on the far west of the civilized world. A realm of deep forests, stubborn people, and customs that border on heresy. Once, she was a feared player of the Great Game. But that was before her Shame. Now she is a pariah-state, a refuge for the unwanted, the misunderstood, and the unlikely. But who are you? / a treat for @bariolee !
servesorlais:
Maybe that had been a bit of a reach for compliments. Would she have been honest, if something had not seemed right, if there was more she wanted from him? Or was she trying not to bruise his pride again after bruising it so very badly the first time?
They were interesting questions to consider, but not as interesting as the way she guided his hand, or the way her touch up his spine sent an answering shiver across his skin. He arched up at the tug to his hair, unsure whether it was to bring himself closer or to try and wriggle away from the sharp sensation; in either case, the result was a nuzzle of his face against the side of her cheek before his fingers eased into their duty. The teasing, evidently, hadn’t gone without response. His fingers found slickness as they began a tiny, circular rubbing motion, a light trace in the same way that his kisses from a moment ago had been only a gentle pressure.
He supposed it would be selfish to consider how flattering it was that she anticipated his touches so badly. He was no rake, not as she had accused him the day before! But he knew a part of him still found something appealing in the knowledge he was wanted in this way. It would have been enough, if it had been a purely physical craving on her part; but how many times now had she soothed his doubts and assured him she cared for more than just the chevalier’s physicality? Enough, again.
It felt good, better than he wanted to admit in some respects, to think her laughter and teasing signified enjoyment of another kind alongside their other pleasures. It might sting just a little bit later on, when for one reason or another he’d have to say goodbye to her. But for now, he could enjoy the fact that the warmth building in his chest had its source in more than just an elevated heartbeat.
His other hand, which had been momentarily unoccupied, worked its way under the hollow of Colombe’s back, first exploratory and then seeking firmer purchase even against the slippery silk garment still clinging to her back. Reluctantly, then, he let his fingers cease their work, and moved to grip the outside of her hip. Once secured, he rolled to the side, making sure to pull Colombe along with him as he shifted position onto his back, though one hand sacrificed its hold against her warm skin so he could prop himself up in a sitting position against the pillows.
❝ Come here. ❞ She was already half entangled with him, which maybe made the instruction unnecessary; but Michel’s hands worked to guide her astride his lap nonetheless, hesitatingly briefly over the dressing gown. She looked beautiful in it, yes, and the cool silk had produced a very opposite flush of heat in his own skin where it slid against him — but perhaps he should have a care not to stain this too, after already treating yesterday’s dress so roughly.
Would he believe her, she wondered, if she were to tell him -- truthfully -- that she regretted having run from him that evening? Or would he think it only a woman’s wiles, meant to ensnare and entangle, part of the Petit Jeu which was seduction and flirtation? Colombe did regret it, though it had in fact been necessary and not part of the Petit Jeu but the Grand.
She regretted having denied herself even a single evening of this pleasure she took in his company, both the physical and otherwise. She regretted the week which had passed between that night and this morning, during which she had been further denied his company, and he hers. The sweet ache of hunger he woke in her with those light, teasing touches of his strong hot fingers poured that regret through her like bitter wormwood; she could have had so much more of this, she who was a creature of impulse and appetite!
But beyond that, she regretted the cruelty of it. She liked Michel, and she had hurt him -- in a small way, perhaps, a wound more to his pride than to his heart, but a wound all the same -- and she was hurting him still, though he did not yet know it. Colombe’s loyalty was to her lord, of course it was. And more than mere loyalty, she loved Fabien, deeply and purely. It was neither the love of a great and enduring romance nor the abiding love of family for family, but it was no less real for all that.
She did not love Michel. But she liked him, with the simple and uncomplicated spontaneity and immediacy of all her emotions, and she knew that she could love him, were circumstances to allow it. And so she regretted it -- she, who seldom looked backward, who seldom gazed through the sharply-turned lens of hindsight at all, preferring the present, preferring the future.
It was an uncomfortable feeling, and the coil of emotions which was twisted up inside her, solid and heavy between breast and gut, would have needed a sharp blade to slice it through. Surely no human hand could ever have unpicked such a knot.
Thankfully, the pattern of her thoughts was interrupted by Michel’s sudden heave and twist, reversing their positions. She rode through the change adroitly, with every bit of her native grace and flexibility brought to bear, and laughed as she found herself seated in his lap. He was sitting upright, and she was facing him; how did he know this was a favorite position of hers? Happy chance, no doubt.
Noting his hesitation over the gown, and thinking perhaps she had correctly divined its source, Colombe let her lips curl into a secret smile and her eyes danced. She arched backward so that her bared breasts thrust out proudly from the opened front of the dressing gown, silk sliding over her skin. ❝ Shall I... keep it on for you, Michel? ❞ she asked.
❤ kisses on the palm and inside of the wrist
The distance of a year, it appeared, had not done anything to ease the heated flushes that arose in Michel’s face when he was around her.
❝ It’s really nothing, ❞ he insisted, tilting his head back and doing his best not to imagine the way her lips had felt when they had closed around his finger, or around … well. Elsewhere. The training ring that Serault’s chevaliers used was no place to be thinking of such things, after all; there was public affection, and secret affection that was deliberately made public for the sake of gossip and reputation, and then there was actual lewdness. Let the kisses remain firmly in the first category, and go no further!
His hand, however, was trembling slightly under her gentle grasp, and it was not actually a result of the kisses. Rather, it was the thin gash running along the center of his palm, hastily bandaged with a scrap of linen cloth, and carefully around that which she placed her lips. Next to him, lying in the dirt, his torn glove … and Colombe’s dagger next to that, the one he’d caught in the middle of his hand rather than on the edge of his vambrace as they’d tested their blades against one another.
❝ You know, scratches like this, ❞ he continued, ❝ never hurt as badly at the Academie as the reprimands we’d receive for making mistakes? ❞ It was an effort to bite back a gasp as her apologetic kiss found the smooth skin at the seam of his wrist. ❝ I think they had a point, my lady. If this is the reward I get for blocking with my hands, I’ll be tempted to do it again. You should be shouting. ❞
But after a second, he gave in to the temptation to curve his hand and swipe his thumb across Colombe’s lower lip, briefly so no one would find reason to stare if they happened to glance this way.

The Lady with the Veil, Alexander Roslin, 1768 (detail)
"I hope you don't mind." There's a small box cradled in Michel's hands, tied with a blue ribbon the shade of robins' eggs, and when he looks down at it, it's almost as if to hide the blush showing through the powder on his cheeks. "I am sure you have your own, but ... I thought of you." Inside: a small silverite dagger, the hilt ornamented with a delicate design of a coiling feather wrapped around a smoke gray pearl, and a tiny sheath to match it.
The dagger was a tiny thing, more of ornament than of utility. It was a pretty little toy, a bit of deadly jewelry. Colombe had hatpins longer than this dagger; and hair combs more suited to be used as weapons. The little blade was, in short, utterly impractical; and she loved it immediately and unreasonably.
Her eyes were bright and her smile soft and wondering as she plucked it out of the little shell of its box; it was like a pearl itself, small and precious and nestled there within the satin padding. Her fingers were delicate as she stroked the coiled feather engraved upon the hilt; she turned it and watched as the grey pearl iridesced and threw off tiny rainbows.
Looking back at Michel, she caught the little blush beneath his power and paint and her smile deepened. He had been prone to giving her little gifts of late — things of silk or of gemstone, slim books of poetry elaborately illustrated and bound in soft, colorful leathers. All of them as impractical and as lovely as this blade, but none of them quite so — so apropos as this.
A blade. Small as it was, this was still a weapon, and one her hand was more than suited to wield. Michel would know that, of course. His training was not her training, but he knew and understood what her training would have been. He had known her first as a lady and still treated her as one; but now he also knew that she was a killer. Perhaps this little gift meant… acceptance?
She tucked the little blade into her bodice, feeling its weight and coolness settle comfortably against her breastbone, between the swells of her bosom. His eyes clung to the spot after she had drawn her hand away, she noted with a little pleasure, and she reached to touch his lips lightly with her fingertips, careful not to smear his paint.
❝ It is beautiful, my lion, ❞ she told him softly. ❝ If a thing of such delicate and dangerous grace reminded you of me, I am well complimented indeed. ❞
servesorlais:
Michel had already been half drawn back to watch her gasping and writhing, and it was much to his pleasure to watch her do so. Maybe she had made herself look presentable, when she had risen to don her silk dressing gown, perhaps to arrange her hair to hide the marks from his mouth. He’d dare say he’d already undone that effort, however, baring her breasts and leaving moisture behind the fresher bites and kisses. It was the lingering trace of her attempts to look polished that made the sight particularly appealing.
There was no laughter to match Colombe’s, but she might still have been able to recognise a little gleam of amusement in his eye as he moved his hands to prop himself up, one braced on each side of her while he looked down. ❝ You, ❞ he began an accusation, ❝ left your teasing unresolved for days. I don’t think you can complain. ❞
It had also been effective, he supposed, if this was the result she had been hoping for all along. The fleeting taste of her had left him with a greater craving, and while he might have said a few days ago that she was too gentle to plan something that cruel, he was no longer convinced of her innocence. Would he have been satisfied to take her once and only once, if she’d succumbed that first time? It might have been easier to stay focused on his real task in Serault rather than facing the torment of wanting her and not knowing if he was meant to pursue her. He could resent her for that, and it would carry more weight than the pretend bitterness over her departure from a few days ago, too — it was unlikely he would see any progress made this morning. Very unlikely.
But it was not a problem to agonize over now, with a hot and heavy arousal demanding relief first.
Michel leaned in to press a light kiss against Colombe’s lip. He did tease this time, presenting a hint of tongue but making no move to deepen it, even while a part of him urged him to claim her, to grind his hips down and forward and hoist her leg up around his waist. He doubted there would be any need for his fingers to loosen the way first, or for his tongue to relax and open her to him; if he wanted it, it could be as rough and urgent as their foray in the trophy room. He could comfortably say that he now felt awake, but that would certainly drive any remnant of sleep away.
Their legs were still tangled close enough that Michel could adjust his position slightly, placing some pressure against the inside of her thigh as a suggestion to part for him. Then he gave in to a mounting temptation, grinding his hips down against hers, rocking forward and gasping slightly at the friction from it. ❝ Unless, ❞ he added, an afterthought, ❝ you have found something unsatisfactory? ❞
❝ I did, ❞ she admitted, still laughing. ❝ And yet… here we are. I do not think you can complain, either. ❞ She ran her hands up and down his body, a long and appreciative caress she followed with a heated sweep of her gaze. ❝ I could not resist you, in the end. ❞ She shrugged a little, as if that was all there was to it, but she knew – and likely he did, as well – how much more complicated a situation this could be, if they allowed themselves to dwell on anything beyond this present moment together.
And the delay had produced the desired effect, in any case. She did not precisely like playing the prey in any game, even when it was part of a greater hunt. It ran counter to her nature to flee and tease and dash among the trees like a doe, flashing her white flag in alarm as she went and drawing the hunters after her. Had this been any other situation, and Michel merely a man who’d drawn her interest, she would have tripped him into her bed long since and been done with him.
She wondered, though, if there was not something to be said for the delay, in the end. It seemed that for both of them, not merely for Michel, the lengthened ‘courtship’ had stoked the flames higher and hotter with anticipation and gratification denied but still desired. She had most certainly fallen prey to her own ploy, if that was the case; she was too fine a hunter for her own good, it seemed! She laughed again at the thought, against his lips as he teased her with too-light kisses and the barest flicker of his tongue.
Remembering that tongue lower on her body, exploring her most intimate places, Colombe’s laughter turned to broken gasps and she let her thighs part for him when the pressure of his leg hinted for it. His hips rocked forward and she felt the hard heat of him against her; a surge of fresh arousal, liquid and intoxicating, shot through her with a bright thrill.
Colombe laughed. ❝ I should say that there is, in hopes it would inspire you to try even harder, my lion! ❞ she teased softly. One hand ran along his spine and fastened into his hair, tugging lightly as she writhed under him. With the other, she drew Michel’s hand down between their bodies to touch her, slick with need. ❝ But that would be a dreadful lie, ❞ she concluded, allowing him to feel for himself how satisfactory she found him.
Beyond several walls, the lovers were whispering things to each other, their bodies blending with shadows, coming together and apart.
Paula McLain, Circling the Sun
hartofglass:
« My apologies, I do not feel especially sorry for you. You brought it upon yourself. »
Fabien only chided her with benevolent familiarity, and no small amount of amusement. Though he was not accustomed with seduction used for the mere reason of learning information for the Game (indeed, that was a bard’s job, something that, if anything, ought to be Hyacinthe’s prerogative, even if Fabien was ever so careful when it came to involving his bard into any such activities again), he certainly was accustomed with seduction, in an on itself, and the rules stated that waiting was on occasion the better choice.
« That very nebulous scandal with the Empress is rather recent », he mused. « So must be the duel he willingly lost. »
A hint of the mischievous entertainment that could so easily colour his moods and expression returned to curl his lips as if they were on his face simply to compliment the curl of his moustache. « All the saucy details are very much enjoyable, my dear, and I imagine knowing his… dating habits could hypothetically be of use in another occasion. I don’t suppose he mentioned anything about that demon, did he? If you return to him in a few days, maybe… if he is truly chasing something of his own, I wouldn’t like the thing to linger in Serault. »
Colombe pouted extravagantly at him, sticking out her tongue as she might have once done when they had been children together. But of course, in all truth, he was entirely correct; she had brought it upon herself, and she could not protest otherwise. He hadn’t told her to seduce Michel, after all; only to flirt a little, to use her pretty eyes and her pretty mouth and her pretty laugh to charm the man into openness.
She’d done the rest on her own, when flirtation had proved... inadequate.
Or that was the story she told herself. Perhaps she could have charmed him anyway, had she tried; but Colombe was too direct a creature to long delight in games of that nature, played for their own sake alone. Flirtation was for seduction; seduction was for bedplay. It was a simple formula, to her mind. There was an aim, a goal. The idea of flirting merely to... what, to manipulate? It was too much the bard’s trick, and while she played at bardic arts now, Colombe was not one.
She was a harlequin. Hers were the shadows and the sudden blade.
“He is... very cautious,” she said now, thoughtful still. “For all that his face gives away much more than he’d like it to, his words are carefully deployed.”
How to tell Fabien that she had begun to actually like the man? She couldn’t, of course. He would never understand. Sighing, she stood from her chair and done as she’d half-hinted she would like to; sweeping her skirts to one side, she slipped herself onto Fabien’s lap, laying her head against his neck and pulling her legs up to hook across the arm of his chair. She sighed a little, contentedly, smelling his familiar scent and letting it relax her tensions.
“He has not yet mentioned the thing that he hunts,” she admitted. “But I have an idea for it, Fabien. I will show him the trophy room, all the things we hunt here, all the strangenesses of Serault, and tell him a few stories. Then perhaps he will tell me his own stories. If not, I shall have to trip him into my bed and ask him there, I suppose.”
servesorlais:
The reaction did not disappoint. Michel’s hips pressed down to meet the roll of hers, offering a tantalizing brush against his own arousal, and beneath her raking fingers, his back arched. His lips had not been immediately poised for another bite, however; he’d meant to press comforting kisses to her skin first, to soothe where his bite had dug in. She might have been velvet softness on the outside, but under his hands, he could still feel the ripple of firm muscle beneath … as she had said, she was not glass. He would not break her.
But he preferred slow and careful pleasure to something fast and rough. He had enough roughness to contend with outside his bed, didn’t he?
From his present position nestled against her chest, he glanced up, taking in the sight of her parted and kiss-swollen lips, her dressing gown spilling off her shoulders, all illuminated by grey morning light. Perhaps he might steal a second’s pride for being responsible for her state, open and wanting for him, each breath she took causing her breasts to rise and fall against him, practically begging for further attention.
Perhaps, he also thought, he’d managed to find some luck for once when his trail brought him to Serault.
It was the kind of thought that necessarily had to be dismissed in this kind of situation, however, and Michel refocused his attention. The touch of silk from Colombe’s sleeves was cool against his back, and he shifted slightly to feel it slide against him one more time before he gingerly traced the path his teeth had taken a few moments ago with his tongue. It was a calming touch at first, but that gave way to a teasing flick, and then a suck as his lips closed around her nipple one more time, his eyes closing contentedly as he busied his mouth. It would have been remiss to ignore the demand entirely, however; there was a sense of pleasure to be found in pleasing his partners, and dutifully, Michel pulled away to play at her other side.
A hand found its way to her hip as he did so, lightly pressing down to hold her in place before she tried to buck against him again. It was tempting, to let his fingers stray between her legs and gauge her reaction to him that way, but it would be sweeter to withhold a little longer, he decided. One thing at a time … they had all morning. There was time to build it up, a thought which sent an almost contradictory rush of pleasure to his groin.
He bit down again. Harder this time, just as she had asked, and rather than immediately going to calm the spot with his lips and tongue as he had done before, he drew back to observe her reaction.
❝ Ah, but you are a tease! ❞ she accused him, laughing. He was playing with her, it was clear, choosing not to respond at once to her plea for more and more intense sensation but only settling in to a long and slow build of it, instead. She could not say she minded; despite her gaspy demand, born more out of the moment’s sudden impulse than anything, Colombe was certainly in no rush.
They had, as she had said, all morning. And where the evening before had been more of a rush to satisfy the needs they had built in each other over days of flirtation and innuendo and lingering looks and delicate touches, this could be sleepier and slower, lazy and languid. They had time to explore and to experiment, to learn how best to touch one another and give one another pleasure and laughter.
For a moment, she wondered why she would bother to learn him so well. Soon enough, she would have to either kill him or farewell him; one way or the other, their time was very limited. The knowledge she acquired here in this bed was not the knowledge she had been tasked with learning; Fabien might still find it interesting, in its way, of course. He did enjoy such physical delights himself and might enjoy the stories she could tell him of taking the chevalier to bed.
But the fact remained that this, all of this, was outside the purview of her assignment. She had not been meant to like Michel, to begin to feel that in him -- the chevalier, the Champion whose loyalty had long driven all his actions, the man of gentle blushes and so evident fondness for silks and finery, contrasted by his rough hands and capacity for sudden shocking violence -- she might have found someone who could understand all the sides of her, not only one or a few. If only she could show him all of those sides, instead of lying by omission; he could not possibly feel the same thing, knowing only the pretty and delicate lady and not the killer. Paradoxically, somehow that was the worst bit of all.
She should have killed him before she’d ever spoken a single word to him.
Brutally, she shoved the thoughts away. The doubts. The inconvenient emotions. She pushed and held them down as firmly as he held her hips, preventing her from moving against him as he clearly knew she wanted.
He bit down again, harder this time. The thrill of pain was a bright sensation, as pure as a clarion calling, a shock which cut cleanly through the slow and liquid pooling of pleasure in perfect complement and counterpoint. Aware of his gaze on her, Colombe arched her neck back but met his eyes quite boldly under half-lowered lids as she gasped and fought, though perfunctorily, against the pressure of his hand on her hips. Let him see the effect he had upon her, then.
"Ser Michel?" The messenger, in the livery of the Inquisition, waited until the Orlesian soldier had given her his attention. "You've a visitor, Ser. Waiting in the great hall for you. A -- Lady Colombe, was the name. I don't know what it's regarding, but she seemed most anxious to meet with you."
For a second, Michel had supposed he was mishearing. It wasn’t, after all, very often that he heard the set of words he wanted to hear, and more than once he’d let these ones from the messenger’s lips feature in his daydreams. He wasn’t even prone to letting his imagination wander, especially when he had enough tasks to occupy his attention. Noting soldiers’ bad habits and reminding them to stay vigilant as they drilled took most of his time and focus, but there were always those moments when night had already drawn in and bathed the courtyard in moonlight and he had to take to his bedroll alone …
Well, not always alone, but it wasn’t to say he stopped thinking of her in those moments.
The wide-eyed blink would have been a tell among his country’s nobles, but the messenger sounded like a Fereldan anyway, which made it excusable. And excuse himself he did. It wasn’t a long walk to the flight of stairs leading up to the great hall; Michel took them two at a time, knowing it was for more than that slight exertion that his heart had picked a faster pace. It was a long ride to get here, so she’d be wearing riding leathers, not one of her silken gowns, and a simpler mask than the one ornamented with glass. Her hair would have to be bound up so the curls wouldn’t tangle from the wind, wouldn’t it?
It was none of those sights that greeted him at a cursory glance around the hall, the sweeping glance he’d grown accustomed to giving before entering any room. There were usually nobles hovering under the light of the stained glass windows, gossiping among themselves while they waited for the Herald to give them audience, but the masks adorning their faces belonged to the capital, to nearby Jader, to the Heartlands.
To the empress.
Oh.
Michel had known all three of Celene’s ladies-in-waiting, of course; he had known the way they carried Majesty’s messages and bowed in unison, dressed all in the same patterns and styles so it wasn’t always clear which was Fleur and which was Couteau and which was Colombe. It was a new sort of fluttering that lodged itself in the pit of his stomach at the realisation that this was who the messenger had meant; if the woman wore the Valmont mask, it would mean she was still loyal. Still Celene’s. It was worse for the fact that he didn’t know if it was hope or dread he should be feeling.
But for a brief moment, Michel let himself be disappointed, not least for having made the selfish error of wanting another outcome.
servesorlais:
If no one would find it unusual, then did she make a habit of this? Michel considered it as his hand cupped around her bare breast, finding a new spot next to her ear to kiss and nuzzle. He thought of what she had said about her bard and her hunter, and how they wouldn’t treat her like the Lady she was; it seemed at odds with the situation itself, the decadence of having a whole morning to waste and servants to personally deliver breakfast.
It was unbecoming, Michel knew, but he couldn’t help a slight pang of jealousy at the thought of those other men having the opportunity to do this regularly. He recalled the bard, pretty in his own way, and tried to remember if Colombe’s hunter had been pointed out to him, but came up blank. No matter, though. They were a mild concern at the moment, a thought in the back of his mind, and easily dismissed. If she had wanted their company, he had no doubt she would have taken it instead; it suited him well enough to be her new golden trophy, too. One way or another, he would be gone before she had a chance to grow bored of him, provided he made something of the time they did have together.
The wriggle of silk against him had been enticing, and Michel could feel the pace of his blood quickening already; his hips pressed forward, seeking more of the subtle friction, and he hummed a quiet sound of approval. Despite it, however, his own pleasure felt of secondary importance at the moment. It was with little reluctance, then, that he released his grip on her chest once again, shifting both of their bodies so that he could press her flat onto her back and position himself on top. It made a pleasant view, he decided; the loose dark hair over her pale shoulders, her exposed throat and round breasts already showing red from the previous night. So his gaze lingered, and appraised, before he leaned down to capture her lips beneath his own.
He’d shied from kissing her last night after she’d pleasured him that way. He had not forgotten, exactly, but it seemed less important of a consideration now, as his tongue pried for entry. There was a staleness to anyone’s breath in the morning, and if he tasted himself in her, it was a risk he accepted to take.
There had been demand behind the kiss, but not urgency; nonetheless, the kiss did not linger for long. Michel’s mouth found its place between Colombe’s breasts, kissing the hollow of skin he found there. A lingering taste of her powders and perfumes, a less than lingering salt of sweat; his eyes slipped contentedly closed, and he felt rather than observed his way over to where his fingers had teased and pinched her nipple into a firm peak.
She liked the sharp hint of teeth, didn’t she? He wanted one of her gasps, wanted her arching up underneath him while she dug in her nails to urge him on. Her lion, she had called him … he might have blushed, before, to hear the endearment, but it seemed that he flushed worse now for being reminded of it now as he made a first and tentative bite.
She did not often enjoy lying down for a lover. Colombe preferred positions which alloted her somewhat more control and freedom of movement -- positions which gave her a certain primacy. She delighted in riding a partner, looking down at him as his face contorted with the pleasure she could give. She enjoyed using her mouth, knowing she had the most intimate part of a man so wholly at her mercy. She did not like to be tied down, or held down.
Not usually, in any case. There were always exceptions, and Michel, it seemed, was one of them. He rolled her, pressing her down and settling himself between her legs; and all she could think was how good his weight felt, and how good he looked above her. She could see the marks of her own nails and mouth standing out red upon his fair skin -- fairer where the sun did not touch it, creamy samite to contrast delightfully with the tawny gold of the rest of him.
Her legs wrapped his as he kissed her and she opened under him easily, allowing his tongue to slide against her own with no concern for taste nor scent. He pulled away too quickly and she might have protested if his head had not so quickly dipped lower. His mouth was talented, his lips hot and wet, and she was opening to him in more ways than one.
This morning, they both lacked the hot edge of urgency which had marked their couplings the night before. There was something slow and lazy about this, a low-burning sort of need and not a flaring, demanding one. They both wanted it merely because they wanted each other, wanted this time together, not because there was need driving them. Colombe wrapped her arms, still clad in clinging silk though he’d opened her dressing gown to reach her breasts, around Michel almost tenderly, dragging the fingers of one hand through his thick mane.
He bit down on her nipple. A shock of pleasure-pain-pleasure went through her and a low, liquid throbbing intensified between her thighs. It wasn’t enough, despite how she gasped in response, despite how her body jerked under his almost without her volition driving it. Her hips rolled, wanting pressure and friction there, but their position as yet denied it to her in any effective way.
❝ ...harder, my lion, ❞ she demanded breathlessly. She wanted more, wanted to feel more than just a hint of sharpness. Her hands raked down his back almost roughly. Had she thought this was languid and without need to it? Well, maybe she had been wrong. ❝ Harder. ❞

❝ I did, ❞ Michel confirmed, his lips curving up into a smile against Colombe’s shoulder. He followed it up with another kiss, adjusted his leg to trap hers against his; the fingers that had taken an exploratory path under her silk robe dared to trace a light circle around her nipple, tweaking it between his thumb and forefinger a second later at the same time he planted a more open-mouthed kiss to her neck, lazy but heated.
He didn’t need her again, not really; she had left him more than sated last night. Even as the fog of sleep cleared, there was still a certain weightiness to his limbs, as if they were going to be slower to wake than his mind this morning. But she was there, and enticingly dressed, and still smelling of sex … not awake long enough to bathe herself, then, but the lack of damp hair could have told him that much. Idly, he wondered how she’d look, all dewy-skinned and smelling of soaps and bath-salts, even more pliable beneath him after relaxing in the embrace of the warm water.
A perk of taking a noblewoman as a lover, mm?
Michel’s hand retreated, sliding out from under the warm covering of silk to seek out its sashed waist, and pulling when he found it, tugging until he could feel the loose knot release itself. Easier by far than the elaborate dresses she had worn yesterday.
❝ Is this alright? ❞ he asked, lips finding a spot next to her ear.
It was too early for the doubts to start creeping back in full force, but they were never far from reach; it occurred to him that even if Colombe had been discreet about who entered her bedroom, and he had no evidence to say she had been, someone might well have found him missing from the guest room by now. She might prefer him gone before he started a scandal for them, and had only neglected to shoo him from her bed out of pity. The wound, after all, was not gone, and at some point he’d have to set about the ugly task of discarding its bandages to look at the raw pink skin beneath. Last night probably had not done it any favors.
And, for all he knew, she had found the time to regret taking disgraced, wounded, barely-noble-to-begin-with Ser Michel into her bed. Brace for the worst, and he would not have to end up disappointed …
Michel’s hand had settled on the outside curve of her thigh, and let his fingers mirror their earlier circular motion, admiring the way it made the silk bunch up. He gave in, too, to the temptation of suckling her earlobe into his mouth, giving a small graze of teeth. There was a saying he knew, about the value of a bird held in your hand; Colombe was in his arms, in her bed, the cool blue silk of her dressing gown rubbing against his skin. It didn’t take deep consideration to remember there was a host of reasons why he shouldn’t take something like this for granted — even if it wasn’t his last opportunity, it was still one that was worth making the most of, just in case.
She gasped softly at the light pinch to her nipple, body awakening to him just that easily. She might have thought herself entirely satisfied after the night they’d shared, the variety of positions they had tried, the many pleasures they have given one another. Her body already ached in that delightful way which spoke of delicious exertions, the memory of those pleasures living in each little bruised place his mouth had left.
But Colombe was a creature of appetites, and he roused her easily to a fresh awareness of them. His mouth was hot on her throat and his hand was hot upon her breast and all at once she wanted him. He smelled of sex and a muskiness which was all male animal; his chest was strong and hard against her back and his leg demandingly tight where it lay across hers. She writhed back against him in a deliberately enticing manner, allowing her silk-clad body to slide teasingly against his thigh and groin and belly.
❝ Oh, yes, ❞ she gasped in response, making a small sound of pleasure when she felt that hint of teeth at her ear. ❝ Yes, quite all right, Michel, more than...! ❞
The question pleased her. Though his body was bold against her, she enjoyed that he asked, all the same. Had she told him he must leave, she did not doubt that he would. Disappointedly, perhaps. With pride injured, maybe. But leave he would, if she asked it.
She was not even considering doing so, luckily perhaps for Michel.
Perhaps, she realized, he had the same concerns she’d had upon waking. He couldn’t know that she’d already sent away the servant who would otherwise have entered to begin the day’s preparations, clearing and airing the room and assisting her to bathe and to dress. He also could not know she had requested food -- for the both of them. He might wonder if he ought to leave before he was caught there.
She had also allowed him to believe Fabien might have disapproved of her taking him as a lover. That it would be a scandal, perhaps, or would threaten her position in Serault’s court. Well, perhaps Fabien would disapprove, but not of Colombe laying with the man. Of her liking him, though? The growing, guilty fondness for him? Of that, certainly.
She would tell Fabien, she decided, if she believed this was becoming a problem. But if she refused to allow it to impact her effectiveness in carrying out her duties, there was no reason to tell her dear cousin a thing. He already worried too much about her, thinking her heart too hardened or her hands too bloodied.
There was no need to tell him, though. And no need to rush through the pleasures waking in Michel’s arms promised, either. There would not be so many days left in which they could enjoy this, after all.
❝ We will not be disturbed, my lion, ❞ she told him somewhat pointedly. ❝ And no one will think it unusual if I am late to rise, and if I take a large breakfast in my rooms. ❞
She caught his hand and drew it back to her breast. ❝ We have all morning. ❞
