Unlike the hero of Goethe's poem "The Sorcerer's Apprentice," who, having learned his master's secrets but forgetting the words of the prohibition, almost caused a flood, Zeman's miller's journeyman rejects black magic.

There is another, higher magic. It is the gift of insight possessed by a lover, the voice of their heart, capable of understanding secrets beyond the reach of even the most powerful sorcerer who commands others, subjugates young souls, and manipulates human destinies.

A simple human feeling revealed to him the same great secret: love is stronger than anything else in the world.

Although one of the primary goals of the Wendish Seminary in Prague had always been the cultivation of the language, it was not until 1846 that the Serbowka, a students' society with that specific aim, was established there.

In the harsh reality of the Master, everything must be paid for, and life can only be paid for with life. For him, the continuation of the mill's existence is an unquestionable law, the only option, and the end justifies the means.

The mill must continue to exist...

Lyschko is generally considered to be a coward. But I can't agree with this. A person who completely disregards the acceptance of society can be considered anything but a coward.

I thought that Preussler's book shows the process of decay of old medieval institutions very well and very aptly. And the fantastic story about the guild of sorcerer miller reflects, among other things, the disintegration of the guild organization.

It is noteworthy that the narrative is sometimes shocking in its brutality: on the one hand, there are detailed descriptions, such as Markus's cruel torture by the miller, and on the other hand, there are concise statements of facts, such as the description of the conditions under the Margrave's rule.

It is through these restrained descriptions that the author allows the reader's imagination to run wild.

Overall, "The Black Mill" is an engaging book that is incredibly captivating due to its narrative style and unexpected plot twists, and it offers a multifaceted approach to interpretation. It can be read both as a fairy-tale narrative and as a parable about political conditions. However, the latter is more in line with the author's intention, but there are still various interpretations possible.

Krabat gradually begins to understand that he and the other journeymen are obliged to obey the miller without question. Only once a year, after the Easter ritual, are they allowed to curse their master and thus give vent to their emotions.

However, it is not until the morning of the New Year, after having spent a year at the mill, that Krabat learns of the most severe countermeasure: every year, one of the journeymen must die.

By learning about this counter-performance, the reader simultaneously becomes aware of the dangers of a totalitarian power structure like the one found in the mill. Only those who conform to the system and fully submit their will to the ruler's (in this case, the master's) can feel safe. There is no escape, even after death, which is determined solely by the master.
