Okay, so. Time to rediscover what writing a text post is like after...how long has it been? Let's settle at "a very long time" hehe.

So...Canada's Post's plan for a return to profitability is to effectively stop being a postal service? I'm sorry, but that's ridiculous.
Even aside from the fact that postal service is a historic institution that ought to be protected for those of us who still appreciate the craft of hand-written letters, this seems to be miscalculated business move. Yes, Canadians largely depend on email and other cloud-based technologies for communication these days, but that's not enough reason to eliminate the service altogether. In fact, why didn't someone at Canada Post see this digital revolution coming and move to reposition the organization years ago?
Instead, now Canada Post is cutting 8000 jobs and increasing postage rates by 35% in order to claim that the service is still trying to be self-sufficient. All whilst admitting that it already has a $1 billion deficit. Yep, because the negative PR is totally going to help too.
And what about Santa? "Hello Santa? This is Canada Post calling. You know the thousands and thousands of children who write to you every year for toys, joy, and other Christmas wishes? Well we're still letting them write to you at H0H 0H0, but you'll have to come down to the nearest post office to pick up the letters now. Mhmm, that's right, all 5500 km. south to Eureka, NU. I'm sure your reindeer wouldn't mind right?"
No, Santa wouldn't like that very much now would he? So if he wouldn't like it, why would anyone else? The countless seniors and disabled who depend on home delivery for their mail? The tens of thousands of business who depend on delivery of supplies, invoices, etc? Is Canada Post trying to drive business into the hands of UPS, Purolator, and DHS? I'm sure those companies are celebrating extra hard this year at their holiday parties.
Okay, I'm not an expert but I understand that, like a rebuilding sports team, trying to right the ship is going to be painful. I'd understand rolling back door-to-door delivery services to perhaps every other day, or twice a week even, but not its complete and utter elimination. I know Canada Post already is working very hard at expanding its epost service and other online initiatives, but maybe it's also time to step outside the comfort zone and looking at alternative revenue streams. Identify the niche markets out there and focus on developing what makes the organization successful. Grow the stamp collecting business, focus on being the delivery service of choice for all things handmade like what you'd find on Etsy or what people post to Pinterest. Heck, make a website to create the Canadian equivalent of Etsy. Handmade crafts, handmade letter openers, postcards, stamps, gorgeous pens, handwritten letters- they all tie together and that's a huge market to tap. Where's that brilliant Canadian spirit that can keep Canada Post alive? I certainly don't see any sign of it. All I've seen is a great bit, "Welp, we're losing too much money so we're just going to roll services back. *Shrug."
I'm sorry Canada Post, I wish I could wish you a merry Christmas, but this is a bitter pill to swallow indeed.
